I would like some information on defragmentation of the hard drive. I did this yesterday on the advice of a friend, it took absolutely ages, over 6 hours. What is actually happening? I don't notice any difference to the performance of my laptop.:(

defrag is just squashing up your hard drive.. ok look at each thing on your machine as a room.. if you empty a room (delete a file/pic etc) it is just a blank space left.. so all defrag does is move all the application so they are all on the same line of space instead of having big holes of nothing everywhere on your hard drive...

it is good for your machine as it doesn't have black holes it can fall into

Defragging the hard drive also puts all the many hundreds of files that make up a program onto the same place on the hard drive so as the program can be accessed quicker.
