The major four soaps have come under fire for not featuring enough poppies on screen.

According to the Daily Star, Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks have not featured a single poppy this year.

EastEnders' Peggy Mitchell was the only major soap character found wearing a poppy, which are used as a sign of respect to those who have fought and died for Britain in wars.

"It's disgraceful. Millions of people watch these soap operas every night of the week and they should reflect reality," English Democrats spokesman Ed Abrams told the newspaper.

"It should be compulsory that the characters wear a poppy and the actor should also want to, out of respect for people who gave their lives. They should be setting an example."

An Emmerdale spokesperson said that the soap featured a memorial plotline each year and always pays its respect in some way.

"We have characters wearing poppies in the next few episodes including Turner, Ashley, Terry, Edna and Brenda," they said. "We do it every year - last year we also had a storyline with all the characters gathered at the memorial outside the church."

for god sakes they are SOAPS, not bastions of morality and the cause of all of society's ills!
