She made her name as Doctor Who's feisty sidekick but Billie Piper could become the first woman to claim the top job.
The 26-year-old actress was a huge hit with fans and critics when she played Rose Tyler in the popular BBC series.
Now David Tennant, who is to quit as the Time Lord at the end of the year, has given his influential seal of approval.
Actress Billie Piper is favourite to win the coveted role of Doctor Who
Asked if Miss Piper could take on the role, he said a female Doctor was a distinct possibility.
'Why not?' he said. 'It's one of those parts any actor could bring something valid to, because it can be anything and it's a blank canvas every time.

The difference is a virtue with each Doctor. It's not like you're casting Tarzan where you've got to have somebody who looks good in a loincloth.'

Miss Piper, married to actor Laurence Fox, 29, is on a career break after the birth of their first child Winston James Fox last month.

Other frontrunners include EastEnders star Tom Ellis, 29, Paterson Joseph, who would be the first black Doctor, David Morrissey and James Nesbitt, the star of Cold Feet.

Outgoing David Tennant, on BBC Breakfast this morning, said he wouldn't be surprised if Billie Piper lands the role as his replacement

Tennant will leave after completing four special episodes of Dr Who to air in 2009.

Executive producer Russell T Davies is also leaving before the fifth series, which will be screened in 2010. Bafta-winning writer Steven Moffat will take over.

Joanna Lumley was suggested as a female Doctor in 1981 to replace Tom Baker but the role went to Peter Davison.

I cannot see the Dr Regenerating into an existing character - although I love Billie it would be too contrived.

Would love it to happen, but i dont think it would work with it being Billie as she was an existing character and stuff :)

I'm sure I read somewhere that Billie had said that being the Doctor would tempt her back, but I don't think she would at the moment. She had 2 years in Cardiff as Rose and missed everyone, so I don't think she's going to want to be doing 9 months a year filming in Cardiff when she has a young child. I think she stood more chance of getting the role when Russell was the boss too; I read a bit of an interview somewhere in which he said it was hard writing 'The Runaway Bride' because he missed her.

I can't see it working either. Imagine if she met up with Sarah Jane or Martha or someone, they'd be like, "OMG, hi Rose!" assuming that the Doctor had told them that she was back in the parallel world, and then it's like, "No... I'm the Doctor."

I bet one of the Doctors if not this one is female, just to show fans that it was possible all along for the Doctor to regenerate into a female.

Hmm, I don't know. I don't think it would be that great personally.

Like Kim said before, people would be all 'Ahh! Rose!' and there'd be the 'Actually, that's the Doctor'

And since when have Timelords been able to regenerate from men to women? I didnt think they could (and I'm probably wrong).

I dont think it'd be a brilliant idea, and it might end up being awkward to wach if you get what I mean?

I think Alan Davies should be the 11th Doctor and I think his assistant should be his best friend not a love intrest. Rose/Ten is the only pairing for me.

I don't know if the Doctor could regenerate into a woman (I haven't seen any of the 'Old Who' and it may not even have been covered,) but if it is possible then I think there will be a female Doctor to prove this.

Yeah, the best friend thing works well. Donna was a very close second as far as New Series companions go for me, and only because I was a big fan of Rose/Ten.

I think David Tennant was only joking when he said that.

I wouldn't mind if it was an existing character though. Like Tom Ellis. But not someone so prominent.

I mean I would love it if it was an exisitig character but how would it work?
