View Full Version : The X Factor - Live 5 - Mariah Carey songs
Rex Features
Dannii Minogue has advised Rachel Hylton to "re-evaluate" if she wants to bounce back on The X Factor.
Hylton found herself in the bottom two for the first time last night after performing Sister Sledge's 'Lost In Music' in a Disco-themed episode. She was then saved after the judges chose to eliminate Austin Drage, who was also in the final showdown.
"I think Big Band week was her week when she really shone. Disco was hard, we've seen it in the past years where good vocalists, it completely throws them," Minogue, who mentors the mother-of-five, explained on The Xtra Factor.
"She was thrown at the start of the show and I think tonight will just make her re-evaluate how precious this is to her and I think next week you will see the most phenomenal performance from her."
Hylton and her fellow finalists will perform Mariah Carey songs when the show continues next Saturday.
Surely Daniel cannot survive in this category? :hmm:
wow I think theres a couple that will struggle this week

why couldnt they have called in ballad week?

its because she is on the show and is a huge star- its all promotion for her. will young actually helped them this week and spent time with them - she will just turn up and sing / mime
Its kinda funny that their single is hero, cos that would have been an obvious choice for someone, so I guess no one will be singing that

nooo im not a fan of Mariah
She’s the most sought-after star in the world, so no wonder there’s such a Carey on to get Mariah to the World Music Awards.
We’ve got our hands on the organisers’ plans and they’re going to spoil her rotten.
They’re forking out £10,000 on a private jet to whisk her from her X Factor performance on Saturday to Monaco for the lavish 20th anniversary celebrations.
It will be the first time she will be in town with her new hubby Nick Cannon – so the trip will be extra-romantic.
Especially since Nick recently confessed: “To be honest there was really no intimacy until we got married.
“That’s a lesson to young girls, don’t give them none until you get married.”
Flunkies are pulling out all the stops for the stunning star. An insider tells us: “It’ll be like a second honeymoon on board the jet for them. There’ll be no expense spared for Mariah. Lilies, mini burgers, sparkling water and bundles of her favourite Hello Kitty toys as a present.
“Staff wont disturb them until Mariah calls, to ensure the love-birds have the utmost privacy on the cosy flight.”
It will be just the luxury Mimi will need after her busy week on X Factor. She will perform her new single I Stay In Love during a Mariah Carey tribute week where she will also mentor the contestants.
The finalists are at No1 with a cover of her song Hero.
Her X Factor debut on Saturday comes after Simon Cowell personally stepped in to request her.
She’ll also perform Hero with the remaining finalists and is a massive fan of the show.
Off the back of her appearance, Mariah’s Greatest Hits album is set to rocket to No1.
And judging from her star treatment in Monaco, it looks like Christmas really has come early for the pop queen.
From Daily Mirror
I hope its not all slow love ballads
I hope they do uptempo/upbeat songs i love Mariah's Heartbreaker

If Rachel is in the bottom two this week she should go. Dannii can't keep defending her it's not fair on the other contestants who have delivered each week.

He will sing his own interpretation of a Mariah Carey song; he won't necessarily have to sing it in Mariah's style.
On the face of it, who would have thought that Leon or even Rhydian could pull off a Mariah/Whitney song but apparently they managed it.
I think he could suprise you.

Diana Vickers may miss tomorrow's X Factor after being stuck down with a nasty bout of laryngitis.
Diana lost her voice on Tuesday and medication has not sufficiently helped her recovery.
The 17 year-old from Blackburn will see specialist ear, nose and throat doctors this afternoon; the doctors will then decree whether or not Diana should take place in this week's competition.
Although fellow competitiors Alexandra and Rachel have already battled through performances while struck down with bugs, it looks like Diana's illness may be just too severe.
Unfortunately Diana has already missed a lot of preparations in the run-up to tomorrow's all-important show.
But the singer is still hoping against hope she will be able to take part in the extra special Mariah's songbook show this week.

Eoghan - still don't rate him I'm afraid but he did better with his performance than I expected - 6/10
Ruth - Fantastic performance. I'm annoyed at Louis "the public won't get you" - is he hoping to put a curse on Ruth as this exact same line was used on Austin last week and he was booted off! She is so underrated - she has such a brilliant voice - 8/10
Laura - Her weakest performance so far, but still a decent vocal - 7/10
Rachel - I thought she did a good performance but she seemed to have lost her confidence as she started crying etc. I really felt sorry for her and I think the pressures of the competition is starting to get to her. 7/10
JLS - They did a great job on a Mariah song! My second favourite performance of the night - 9/10
Diana - I hope she gets better soon! Best wishes to her.
Daniel - Definetly his strongest performance so far. Tonight, I felt he lost the 'pub singer' image that the judges kept attaching him too and he sang like he had the potential to be a recording artist - 7/10
Alexandra - Best performance of the night. She was simply outstanding and deserved the standing ovation - 10/10
I think Ruth, Rachel and Laura all risk being in the bottom 2.

There was no way Ruth and Laura should have been the bottom two this week. Louis is just a yellow belly chicken sh*t he knew if it went to deadlock the public would have chosen Ruth as Laura is a bigger threat to his act The judges shouldn't be allowed a final say it's the public that buy the records let the public decide. Rachel only survived this week because she turned on the tears. Next week it has to be Daniel and Rachel in the sing off.

Laura was the strongest voice in the competition. Along with Alexandra! I love Diana, but her voice isn't as strong as the others.
It's a farce that Laura has gone. I'm sorry, but this years X Factor has just gone down in my estimation. I actually don't care who wins now.
First Austin, now Laura.
If Eoughan, Rachel and Daniel survive next week... or god forbid one of them wins..... then I will never watch again.

Possibly the worst bottom 2 in X Factor history last night. I did have a horrible feeling it could have been Laura and Ruth in the bottom 2 though, as the public hardly ever make the right decision in these kind of shows.
Laura and Ruth both should have stayed, as I think both acts have some of the strongest vocals in the competition (along with Alexandra). However, I thought that the right decision was made in that Ruth stayed. Based on the second performance alone, I preferred Ruth's performance to Laura's. It was a terrible decision to make though but I don't think Louis should be solely blamed. If anyone is to blame, it's the public for not picking up the phone and voting for Laura or Ruth. All the other judges had to vote too! Simon chose Laura to leave as well and I bet if he had the deciding vote instead of Louis, he would have still chosen Laura to send home. Sending it to deadlock kind of defeats the object of the judges deciding who goes home anyway..
I wasn't really keen on Cheryl's attitude after the result was announced. Isn't she aware that she will have to lose an act eventually? Doesn't she see this is the whole point of the programme that acts get eliminated each week? On The Xtra Factor, she accused Louis's vote of being tactical but she just came across as being bitter and a very sore loser to me.
.:SpIcYsPy:.
09-11-2008, 10:09
Pah-ha. I laughed out loud when they said Diana was really sick and they were playing a clip of her rolled up in her duvet but yet she has a face full of slap on! If she did sing tonight I wouldn't have believed none of it but it did seem serious and therefore obviously I hope she gets better soon.
I can't believe it was either Ruth/Laura! Both amazing singers so was really shocked by that! Stupid Daniel.. Can't believe there's people voting for him, waste of talent!
Louis Walsh defended his decision to eliminate X Factor star Laura White after facing a backlash from fans last night.
White was voted off after competing against Ruth Lorenzo in the final showdown, with Walsh's deciding vote sealing her fate.
The Irish judge was booed loudly by the studio audience as he discussed his dilemma on ITV2's Xtra Factor spinoff, but he insisted that voters were to blame for the shock result.
"Do you know what? They can boo all they want," Walsh responded. "The girls were in the bottom two, somebody didn't vote for them. People at home often vote for the person they feel sorry for most of all."
Asked to name a contestant who is "getting away with" delivering poor performances each week, he replied: "Daniel [Evans], by a mile."
"But you know, there's going to be someone in the bottom two every week," Walsh continued. "One person's going to win the series. But when Ruth sang 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door', wow! I had to keep her."
Meanwhile, Dannii Minogue spoke out in defence of her fellow judge, claiming that he bears the brunt of criticism because he is called on to cast his elimination vote last.
"Louis has had it every week [when] it gets to his deciding vote," she explained. "It's the hardest seat to sit in. Please don't put me in that seat!"

if any of those win then it's a fix! I think they have all taken a place in this competition that should have gone to people who had talent. Fair enough they can sing, but nowhere near to the standard of the others.

I give in with the X Factor! The only 2 people (Austin and Laura) I really actually liked have now gone! Grr I'm not a happy bunny! They lost a very big talent last night, but then...I do think Ruth is good, but I jsut don't think she would go as far as Laura could've done as a recording artist.

09-11-2008, 14:06
alexandra is bound to win it and i really dont like ruth or rachel now because they should have went instead of both austin and laura
Two travestys tonight - that a talented artist has to leave the competition when tango man stays in and secondly that Diana gets a pass to next week's show, she should have been thrown out of the competition, granted it's not he fault she has a throat infection but why should someone else leave when she gets to stay for not even singing, doesn't seem right if you ask me. TBH i prefered the show without her pathetic voice.
The show is full of really talented people this year, the fact that such talented people as Austin and Laura have gone, shows how high the standard is this year! Any of the remaining acts (minus Daniel) could quite easily win it this year!

I think Rachel should goooo. She really doesnt have the X factor or the talent imo. SHe has a pretty poor attitude too, and I find her very unlikeable.
I cant believe Laura went Daniel went
Now for diana, Im gonna defend her here cos I love her and I think she still will go far, ok she got through cos she was ill but this was serious cirumstances, even if it was any other contestant I would accept it! The thing this once happened on pop idol and Rick whats his face went through but the second week he had to leave cos he was still ill and it was only allowed for one week.
So letting dinana go through was the right thing to do!!

I was shocked Laura was in the bottom 2 and was sent Home. But Ruth did a good survival song. If Diana is not well enough to sing next week she should be sent Home too. Daniel should have been in the bottom 2 in my opinion. I do not think much of Rachel's "talent" and she has a bad attitude IMO. My fave acts at the moment are JLS and Alexandra. :cheer:
Eoghan Quigg - 'Anytime You Need A Friend'
Louis: "Eoghan, every week you walk out on that stage and what the people at home don't know is that this kid has no fear. The only critique is the hair - it's turning into a birds' nest! Simon Cowell is the only person not to take advice from about hair."
Dannii: "Congratulations on everything this week! The voice was magic on that. Best performance so far!"
Cheryl: "You amaze me more and more each week. The amount of confidence you have is unbelievable. I'm so happy for you tonight. That song shouldn't have worked with your voice but it really did. You made it work."
Simon: "I find it astonishing, that you're 16 years old, you’ve got a little baby sister and you're singing in front of Mariah Carey. That's the best song you've sung so far, actually you'd probably have a hit record with that. And one of the top mangers in the country just comments on your hair. What a ridiculous thing to say!"
Ruth Lorenzo - 'My All'
Louis: "Ruth, you always give it your all. I love the song, I love the dress but there's something missing, I don't think you're connecting with the audience. To be honest it was more Mariah Scary than Mariah Carey."
Cheryl: "Is it just me or do you get hotter every week? I love the simplicity but because I love you, I'm going to be honest with you, it wasn't one of my favourite songs for you Ruth, but you look sensational."
Simon: "Two things I loved about that performance…and the singing was good as well! Ruth, you really are growing on me! I like you, I like the fact you are passionate but I think you were always going to suffer with the Mariah comparison tonight. I hope you stay in the competition."
Dannii: "That was a beautiful performance, Ruth. It came from the heart and I know you wanted to sing this one. It was beautiful and you do give it your all every week."
Laura White - 'Endless Love'
Louis: "After boot camp and the auditions, the reason we were so excited about you was because of this amazing voice. I think you're on the way, the image is getting better and you have a great voice."
Dannii: "Laura, your performances are always so spot on. What I love seeing growing in you is your confidence and if Mariah is saying no notes, then that's a massive confidence boost!"
Simon: "Just to end on this subject of image, the only reason I said it was because when I first met you, you had your own style and quirkiness and I wanted you to get back to your own individual style. The performance tonight was one of your weakest. It was very hotel bar performance, old fashioned and I didn't like the arrangement. It wasn't you and it wasn't the person I saw at the beginning."
Cheryl: "Simon, there is a big, big difference from someone coming into the audition room and then singing to 12 million people each week. To me, your image is the least important thing. To get up there and play the piano, you have to be so dedicated to music. I am so proud of you and you are absolutely amazing."
Rachel Hylton - 'Against All Odds'
Louis: "I'm glad I saved you last week. You're getting a hard time in this competition and I wish people would judge it on your vocals and not believe everything they read in the papers because you have talent."
Cheryl: "You seemed very emotional in parts of that song. I was glad you chose your own song but I think you’ve had a big confidence knock and it's not nice to see. I want to see that spark and spunk you had originally but well done for tonight."
Simon: "I just like you and your feistiness and the fact you stood up for yourself and I know what this means to you. I've got to know you and your family and I really hope people give you another chance."
Dannii: "It was a great achievement for you to get through from last week. We work on the songs each week and [the reports were] misleading as we work on the songs together each week. I must stress, we also work together on image, styling and vocal training - the whole package. It was a great performance tonight."
JLS - 'One Sweet Day'
Dannii: "You guys that was fantastic. I love your style and image and vocally that was really good!"
Cheryl: "Marvin, that was the best I've ever heard you sing. I keep hearing this vocal harmony group thing but please don’t let Louis turn you into Westlife. The Michael Jackson week when you stole the show was brilliant…"
Simon: "Guys that was an impossibly hard song to sing. You guys have really connected, the image was fantastic. I'm actually going to be amazed if you guys don't make the final."
Louis: "I'm not trying to turn you into Westlife. Little Miss Showbiz here thinks she knows it all! In the words of Barack Obama, can you win the competition? Yes we can!"
Daniel Evans - 'Open Arms'
Louis: "That was so much better than last week. I didn't think Mariah week would be good for you. Never in a million years are you going to win the competition."
Cheryl: "Someone's got their mojo back, haven't they? That was my best performance of yours yet!"
Simon: "Daniel, that wasn't bad! For you, it wasn't bad. It wasn't a Mariah song but that aside it was a good choice of song. You were certainly better than last week, which you know I thought was hideous, but this was OK!"
Dannii: "It fitted in with the brief of the songs for the week. What I like about you is that you have been so versatile to get through the weeks and all of your girl fans will have loved that!"
Alexandra Burke - 'Without You'
Louis: "You're getting better week after week after week. I'm hearing Whitney, Mariah, Toni Braxton. That was the best performance of the night so far."
Dannii: "You look beautiful but what I also love to see is the funny side of you. After you met Mariah you were like a little kid! It's a great week for you."
Simon: "I love your attitude and your enthusiasm. We don't hear you whining or complaining. I have to say you're 20 years old and you're singing one of the big Mariah classics. She's ten metres away and that was outstandingly good!"
Cheryl: "I know how terrified you were, but like Mariah said, you are one of the few people who can use those nerves in a positive way. That was one of the best performances of the series."

Mariah Carey has said she will keep any baby news secret if she decides to start a family with husband Nick Cannon.
The singer has faced speculation about whether she wants a child since the pair married last April, but remained tight-lipped about her plans.
She said: "People are constantly asking me if I'm pregnant, but I don't like to talk about it too much. I just think about it as the next phase. We'll see."
The 38-year-old admitted that she only reconsidered having children after tying the knot with Canon, saying: "I've changed my mind because I am with The One.
"I think we would make good parents, and that we'd be able to figure everything out together."
Carey recently revealed that she made her husband wait two months before they slept together for the first time.

I just hope all of Louis' stupidy does not affect JLS! Everyone's going on about how he kicked out Laura so JLS have a bit 'less competition' (which I would sort of agree with) so you know! :(
Lily Allen has confessed to being "shocked" after seeing Laura White kicked off The X Factor.
The popstar objected to the public voting White and Ruth Lorenzo into the bottom two, claiming that pool cleaner Daniel Evans should have been dismissed from the ITV1 talent show.
"I think we were all a little shocked right?" Allen wrote on her MySpace blog. "Laura didn't deserve to go in my opinion, neither did Ruth (my personal favourite).
"I've been left feeling quite upset by the [results show]. I can not believe that week after week, Daniel the pool man is still in, people are quite mad, I'm sure."
Culture Secretary Andy Burnham also commented on White's exit during Commons question time, saying: "The wonderful and talented Laura White [was] very harshly voted off X Factor on Saturday."
get over it
people need to get over it, Laura is out - FACT. She can't have been that good to be in the bottom two. Adios Laura, let's focus on who's left. No sense crying over spilt milk.

Atleast we've still got the brilliant Ruth
Ruth has really grown on me now! I really like her - unfortunately, I can see her being out in the next few weeks seeing as she was bottom 2 last week and before.

i dont think shes brilliant - sure she can hit those high notes but she sounds flat when she tries to sing the low ones she certainly showed that last week - im quite looking forward to her going
Ousted X Factor contestant Laura White has been offered a record deal, her father has revealed.
Adrian, 50, told The Mirror: "We're waiting to see what they have to say."
A petition in support of the 21-year-old has apparently gathered more than 21,000 signatures since she was controversially voted off the talent show on Saturday night.
Her dad said he believes her exit was a result of "mud-slinging" after a tabloid claimed she was dating a producer on the show.
He said her boyfriend Matthew Firsht just arranges audience tickets. "I'm her dad and I would always defend her but she really is squeaky clean. Laura got no special treatment - she queued up for hours just like the rest of them."
Following White's departure from the show, which was raised in the House Of Commons, the finalist posted some of her own material on a website for unsigned talent.

You know what. Laura was the best singer on the show but obviously the voters didnt think so. She was in the bottom 2 and to be honest if i was in Louis position i would have put Ruth through too. She sang better on the night.
Veiwers cant complain cos obviously they didnt vote for her.
But i think this stupid show has been set up from the beggining. I think they are trying to find another Leona and think that Alex girl will win. Dunno why like cos she is the worst one there. Most of her songs are so predictable. I knew she was gunna sing that Mariah Carey song before the show even started.
REJECT Laura White has done an Arnie and vowed: “I’ll be back” after being Terminated from the X Factor.
The singer, 21, hinted of a return to the show to delighted fans who bumped into her in Central London.
When the group told her she should not have been given the boot, she replied: “Don’t worry — I’m going back on the show.”
More than 35,000 angry viewers have signed an online petition demanding their favourite be reinstated on the ITV1 hit.
Her reassuring words to the devastated viewers who spotted her at Holborn Tube station on Tuesday suggest under-fire bosses at the show may have decided to give in to popular demand.
The sexy jazz star from Bolton, Gtr Manchester, had been a bookies’ favourite to win the talent competition.
But she was sent home by three of the show’s four judges on Saturday night when she found herself in the bottom two with Spanish beauty Ruth Lorenzo, 25, after the public vote.
Some of her supporters have claimed they were UNABLE to get through on the voting phone lines. They have written on the “Laura White Was Robbed” petition that her voting number was constantly busy.
And Laura herself told The Sun that her mentor Cheryl Cole, 25, suspected the hype around her position as show favourite had meant her fans didn’t bother to vote — believing she would be safe.
The singer told us: “Cheryl thinks everyone thought they just didn’t need to pick up the phone.”
Meanwhile the huge groundswell of public support has not done the brunette’s budding career any harm.
TV Biz reported yesterday that the singer is in talks with three record companies — all of whom are, according to dad Adrian White, 50, “very keen”.
For god's sake! If they bring her back then it's making a mockery of the show. The format is, you vote, someone goes. If they bring her back they have to bring the rest back.
Personally I think it's a bigger travesty that Austin was booted out, but no one seems to be kicking up a fuss about him leaving!
Laura White had been tipped to make the final ever since Boot Camp, with Dannii Minogue and reigning champ Leon Jackson calling her the "one to beat", but her X Factor journey came to an abrupt halt on Saturday. Does she blame her performance for her premature exit? Her image? Or the way she was portrayed in the press? We called the 21-year-old Bolton girl to find out.
How are you bearing up today?
"I'm doing okay, but it's definitely been a shock. The judges believed in me so much right from the start so I don't know what's gone wrong."
Why do you think your performance didn't connect with the public?
"I've watched my performance back and I don't actually think it was anything to do with my performance. Cheryl thinks the public thought they didn't need to vote for me because they were confident I'd be safe. I'm not sure to be honest."
A couple of weeks ago a newspaper claimed you were dating an X Factor producer. Do you think that might have affected your popularity?
"I've asked people about that and they don't think it had any effect on my vote. [My boyfriend] is a man who does audiences for the show but he has no insight into The X Factor whatsoever - and that's now been proved because obviously I've been voted off. I had no involvement at all with anyone from The X Factor, but I just had to plod along and hope people didn't believe the lies."
How did you feel when you read that story?
"It was very difficult for me to take in because I've been working for years as a singer, songwriter and musician. I finally got my break on The X Factor and I just wanted to be portrayed in the best and most realistic way possible. The story made me look like I was less of a person than I actually am and it showed me in a negative light, which I was very unhappy about."
Louis said he saved Ruth because she had "more fight" left in her. Do you think that was the case?
"Not at all. I've been doing three gigs a week since I was 15 and I've literally dedicated my life to my music, so nobody's fought harder than me. Cheryl thinks Louis's decision was tactical, but I can't say anything because I think Ruth is amazing. She sang so well and for whatever reason the judges decided to send me home."
Last week Simon criticised the image you projected on the show. How did his comments make you feel?
"It was difficult to hear, but I understood what he meant. At Boot Camp I had my own quirky, jazzy style and I think that was taken away because we did a different genre every week. One week it was big band week, so I wore a big dress, and this week was Mariah week, so I was obviously going to wear something elegant. I went with the genres, so my image was definitely taken away in that sense. I'm so grateful that I got onto the show, but I do question if I've done the right thing with image."
Is it true that the results from the first four shows were leaked to the contestants this week?
"No, that's not true at all. I wish they had been, it would have given me a bit of confidence if I'd done well!"
So there was no tension between you and Diana?
"No, Diana was my best friend from the start and we shared a room in the X Factor house, so it would have been a bit difficult if we hadn't got on. I met Diana at the "judges' houses" stage and we clicked straight away. On Saturday when I went back to the house she was the first person to comfort me. Diana had said from the start I was going to make the final so she just couldn't believe what had happened."
Do you think she should have been allowed a free pass to the next round?
"Yeah, I definitely do. Diana was a very ill girl and if she'd have sung her voice would have gone. I don't feel any anger at all and what happened couldn't have been helped. She was ill and that was that."
The X Factor continues Saturday at 7.20pm on ITV1.
