The Exorcist has topped a poll of the nation's favourite horror films.
More than 6,000 HMV customers rated their favourite scary movies in the survey, with William Friedkin's 1973 supernatural thriller taking the top spot for the second year in a row.
Stanley Kubrick's The Shining was next on the list for eliciting fear and terror, followed by Ridley Scott's Alien.
HMV's Jonny Scurfield said there has been a recent surge of interest in the horror genre, commenting: "Halloween has become a key retail event, with sales of horror DVDs more than doubling in the past three years, and this year, with the doom and gloom of the credit crunch, you get the feeling it may prove a bit of a boom for horror, with more people staying in to watch their favourite movies."
The survey was conducted on hmv.com over a four-week period between September 19 and October 20.
