Playwright David Lindsay-Abaire is being lined up to script Spider-Man 4, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Lindsay-Abaire, who won a Pulitzer Prize in 2007 for his play Rabbit Hole, is expected to finalise negotiations soon to board the Sam Raimi-directed sequel.

Zodiac scribe James Vanderbilt had previously worked on a screenplay for a fourth movie, allegedly sketching out a story arc spanning across two movies.

Tobey Maguire will return to the lead role, with Kirsten Dunst also expected to be back as love interest Mary-Jane Watson.

A tentative release date of May 2011 has been penciled in for Spider-Man 4.

Sam Raimi has revealed that filming on Spider-Man 4 will commence in February.

The director also admitted that there were many changes he would like to go back and fix about the 2007 third instalment of the superhero franchise, First Showing reports.

"What would I have done differently? I would have done everything differently, every single shot," he told the Los Angeles Times.

He claimed that he wants to do the webslinger cinematic justice this time around.

"I want to make the best [Spider-Man movie] of the bunch and I've always been touched by Peter Parker in a way that I've never been able to describe on film, even though I've got a great actor performing it."

The script for the fourth film in the franchise is being written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, while Raimi expects to have the first draft by mid-June.

Actress Kirsten Dunst is reportedly willing to sign on for the film, based upon the strength of the screenplay.

Raimi added that he’s about to hire a "production skeleton," and hopes to have the film ready for its May 6, 2011 release date.

Kirsten Dunst has reportedly been confirmed to star in the fourth instalment of the Spider-Man franchise.

According to the New York Post, Sony producer Todd Black has said that Dunst is returning as Mary-Jane, laying speculation to rest that the actress had been debating signing on to the project.

Black also confirmed that there are no plans to marry Peter and Mary Jane in the highly anticipated sequel.

However, when asked about who the villain would be in Spider-Man 4, the producer kept tight-lipped.

Black said: "We're just coming up with who the villain's going to be now. We'll be shooting in New York again. Trust me - people will appreciate who we pick, because it'll be a big part of New York."

Late last week, reports spread across dozens of Internet sites claiming that actress Rachel McAdams has been cast to play a villain named the Black Cat in the fourth installment of the Spider-Man franchise. If your spider senses got all tingly at the idea — well, sorry, but according to McAdams, it’s simply untrue. “That’s a total rumor, I have to say,” the actress, who will next be seen in the Dec. 25 action-adventure tentpole Sherlock Holmes, tells EW. “I was hanging out in Toronto the other day and someone came up to me and said, ‘I just heard you’re doing Spider-Man 4.‘ And I said, ‘Really? No one told me!’ It’s not true.” A rep for Sony Pictures concurs: “It’s an Internet rumor, as so many things are these days.”

Andrew Garfield has been slated to play Peter Parker in the upcoming Spider-Man film.

Sony Pictures announced on Thursday that the 27-year-old, who is relatively unknown in the acting world, will fill the title role in the upcoming Mark Webb production.

"Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor's work understand his extraordinary talents," Webb said.

"He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker."

Producer Avi Arad added: "I'm incredibly excited about Andrew Garfield. In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive, and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry, and cheer.

"We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future."

Garfield will succeed Tobey Maguire, who portrayed Parker in the first three films.

Spider-Man will be shot in 3D and is scheduled for a July 2012 release.

Sources confirm Deadline Hollywood‘s report this morning that Emma Stone will receive the coveted offer for the role of Mary Jane Watson in Sony’s reboot of the Spider-Man franchise. She will be taking on the role as Spidey’s love interest that Kirsten Dunst has played in three movies.

The 21-year old actress is quite the up-and-comer in Hollywood. Her current film Easy A has already generated $35 million in grosses and is destined to have another strong weekend this frame. That comes after her noticeable roles in last year’s Zombieland and 2007′s debut performance in Superbad. She is currently starring in DreamWorks’ adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s bestseller The Help, which Tate Taylor is writing and directing for the studio.

Sony bosses have declined to reveal which villain Ifans will play in the film.

As well as Molina and Dafoe, the Spider-Man bad guys have been played by Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace.

The name of the upcoming Spider-man film, starring British actor Andrew Garfield, has been announced as "The Amazing Spider-man."

Garfield, who replaces Toby Maguire as Spider-man, spoke of how "insanely excited" he is by the role: "[I am] overwhelmed of the decision to allow me to step into a legacy that I have always cared about."

He also likened the character of Spider-man to some seminal Shakespearean classics, saying: "You can never see enough Hamlets or King Lears, I truly feel that way, that Spider-man is our mythology and our fairytales".

As well as announcing the title of the film, Columbia pictures have released a new image of Garfield dressed in Spider-man's iconic red and blue outfit; the first picture of him wearing the complete mask and suit combination.

The Amazing Spider-man is due to be released on July 3, 2012.
