A Chorley man has been handed a £350 fine for watching TV shows including Hollyoaks too loudly.

Peter Nobile, who is in his 60s, reportedly "made his neighbour's life hell" for over a year by continuing to watch television and listen to his radio at high volumes.

According to the Leyland Guardian, Nobile's next-door neighbour Mrs Sweeney quickly complained to Environmental Health officials, who issued Nobile with an abatement notice in February. However, the decision was later taken to prosecute when he continued to breach his notice.

Leyland Magistrates' Court heard two sound recordings made through Sweeney's walls, which were said to be sound bites from an episode of Hollyoaks and a film.

Environmental Health Officer Susan Briggs told the court: "[Mr Nobile] firmly believed he did not have any hearing problem and was not disposed to seek advice from his GP or otherwise."

Sweeney said: "He didn't seem to take any notice of what had been said to him. This last couple of months, he has made it even worse for me. I have felt like going next door to take his radio out. It was just unbearable."

Magistrate Par Arrowsmith concluded that the noise emanating from Nobile's property had a 'detrimental' effect on Sweeney's wellbeing. He subsequently fined Nobile £350 as well as ordering him to pay £809.31 costs and £15 to a victims' surcharge fund.

Well...if he's making that much noise he deserves it. If he doesn't have hearing problems or is not seeking help for them he doesn't have any excuse.
