Dressed smartly in a new leather jacket, Will Fletcher (Gary Lucy) enters the CID office on his first day as a Trainee DC. He is immediately pounced on by DCs Jo Masters (Sally Rogers) and Grace Dasari (Amita Dhiri) who trick him into getting comfortable in DS Stuart Turner’s (Doug Rao) desk, much to the Sergeant’s annoyance.

Brushing off the jokes and sarcastic comments, Will gets his first case when Sarah Bale (Zoe Henry) calls the police to tell them that her house has been burgled and that her husband, Travis (Tim Dantay) is missing. The case takes a sinister twist when the construction site that Travis runs is deliberately set on fire – and Travis is found badly beaten by an open safe in his cabin. The officers soon discover that anti capitalist protester, Desmond ‘Redeye’ Reed (Gareth Farr) had been threatening Travis over the re-development of the land and threatened to burn the site.

At the hospital, Will interviews Travis who explains that he was at home when men in masks broke into his home and dragged him to the site office, forcing him to empty the safe. As the investigation develops, Will and Stuart realise that Travis is being blackmailed by Jimmy Lynch (Steve Nicolson), the head of a security firm. Travis has been defrauding his clients in order to get the money to Lynch, fearing for his family’s safety.

Travis admits that Lynch has given him 24 hours to come up with another payment, so a sting is arranged and Travis, terrified, agrees to help. At the construction site, Will goes undercover, dressed as a builder, to keep a watchful eye on an increasingly panicked Travis, who eventually admits he can’t go through with it. Taking his place, Will meets Lynch and tells him he’s a friend of Travis’s, there to hand the money over. A highly suspicious Lynch shocks Will by pushing a bloodied and beaten Redeye in front of him to show him what he’s capable of. As Will rushes to Redeye’s aid, Lynch strikes him on the back of the head and Will falls to the floor.

Out patrolling the notorious Bronte estate, PCs Arun Ghir (Abhin Galeya) and Millie Brown (Clare Foster) find a gang beating up Darren Smart (Christian Brassington) and Jade Conway (Katy Ducker). As the group quickly disperse, the officers tend to the young couple who shyly admit they had just met that night in a club. They were heading back to Darren’s house when he was set upon, beaten up and had his car and belongings stolen.

Back at the station, Arun is fired up by the case and insists that his colleagues do their best to catch the gang. Later, the officer’s head back to the estate and find the gang who immediately split up and run away. Arun, absolutely determined to catch them up, leaves Millie and his colleagues far behind. But it’s not long until he realises he’s walked into a trap and is soon surrounded.

Back at Sun Hill, after being stripped of his dignity and most of his uniform, Arun is forced to explain to Sergeant Smith (Alex Walkinshaw) what happened. Smithy, angry but sympathetic, decides to trace the gang using Arun’s stolen radio and the officers finally get a result when they arrest the youngest gang member, Josh Conway (Charlie Hillman).

However, Smithy is shocked when he realises Josh is Jade’s brother and he eventually reveals that Jade is behind the spate of violence and muggings. Josh finally confesses to Jade’s whereabouts and when officers storm the flat, they discover Ian Cobb (Cameron Miller), another of Jade’s victims, tied up and beaten. Jade and her gang make a run for it, but Arun has resolved to catch them this time.
