tuesday
Along with the petrol can, Jay's found some old, dirty rags and soaks them liberally with petrol. He leaves the Arches and walks down the street with a plastic bag full of rags soaked in petrol. Arriving at Garry and Minty's house, he stuffs one of the rags through the letterbox, but Billy manages to catch him before he lights it. Billy grounds Jay, before Jay accuses him of doing what he always does, giving up on people. Just as Billy's about to lunge at him, he holds himself back and apologises.

Later, Phil chats to Jay about his attitude towards Billy, while Billy makes a call to Social Services asking someone to pick Jay up – he can't cope. Jay and Billy have a heart-to-heart about their situation and Jay promises not to play up again. The pair shake hands. However, Jay finds the suitcase with all his belongings in and he's crestfallen. As Billy calls Social Services to tell them that he's resolved their problems, Billy sees the suitcase open in the living room with some of Jay's belongings having disappeared – along with Jay.

Meanwhile, Max turns up at Jack and Tanya's, just as they're making the final preparations for their move, demanding to know what's going on and why there's a 'sold' sign outside the house. Tanya suggests that she was going to tell Max all along, but Max wants to know the full story – if she tells him, he'll tell her about Rainie. Tanya's shocked that he's found her and drags him to one side to speak in private. Max gives Tanya Rainie's address and tells her that her sister now has a job. Tanya, however, lies and promises Max that they'll not move the kids too far away and that their final destination will be in England.

Jack and Tanya head home and Tanya's furious that Ronnie knows about their plans to move to France. Meanwhile, Max puts in a call to the estate agent to enquire about the house and realises that Tanya lied when the agent confirms that the seller already has a property lined up. Later, Ronnie decides that it's time Max knew about Jack and Tanya's intentions.

Elsewhere, Zainab informs Mas that the Post Office is no longer a viable business; Tamwar announces that he's going to Oxford, while Shabnam reveals that she's moving to Pakistan; Phil confronts Archie about Eric's trophy; and Dot decides she'll fight to save the Post Office.

thursday
Tamwar's celebrating his birthday but isn't exactly enthralled with his present from his mother – a student guide to Oxford. Masood quickly points out that it wasn't his choice and to make up for it is keen to cook a meal at 5.05pm – the exact time Tamwar was born. Zainab, however, tells Masood that the meal clashes with the Post Office protest. Angry about the situation, Masood forbids her from going. Later, Zainab tries to persuade Dot to tone down the protest, but Dot's insistent. Zainab realises that her situation is spiralling out of control. Later, Masood finds Tamwar's card from Syed and suggests that they don't tell his mother. Zainab, however, is standing behind them.

Later, Zainab and Masood row about their family setup. She frets that her own son is hiding things from her and she has another son who won't even talk to her. Dot, meanwhile, has called a photographer from the Walford Gazette to attend the protest, while Shabnam confirms her intentions to go to Pakistan. Masood tells Zainab that she has to start being honest, or she risks using her family. At the protest, everyone waits with baited breath for Zainab to speak. They're all left in shock, however, when she tells them all the real reason why the Post Office is closing down…

Meanwhile, Dawn is mystified when she finds a petrol-soaked rag hanging from her letterbox and shows Garry. Billy sees Dawn and asks if she's OK before rushing off. Dawn, however, follows Billy and demands to know who put the rag there. She quickly realises that it's Jay's doing and demands to know what Billy's going to do. Billy's forced to come clean with Dawn about Jay's disappearance. Later, Billy's out looking for Jay but can't find him anywhere. Dawn, meanwhile, is going through Jay's belongings and comes across a picture of her, Jase, Dawn and Summer along with some kind words. At that moment, the police arrive to see her. Dawn explains to the police that her panic has all been one, big confusion. After the police have left, Dawn goes in search of Jay herself.

Elsewhere, Denise agrees to give Darren a driving lesson; Max is fretting to Suzy about Tanya and Jack's imminent departure, but Suzy drops a bombshell on him when she reveals that he's going to have to move out because Phil's moving in; Suzy strikes a chord with Phil when she reminds him that he's still living with his mother; Jack finds the piece of paper with Rainie's address on it and confronts Tanya; and Suzy's fuming when Phil reveals that he wants a place to live just for him and Ben.

friday
Zainab's wallowing in self pity following yesterday's revelation about her family's financial state to the Square. As she argues with Masood, Zainab is moved by his love and support for her, while in the hall, Shabnam throws her rucksack over her shoulder and leaves. Masood persuades his wife that she has to be strong and face up to their situation. The pair head across to the stall to see Tamwar and they're all surprised that Shabnam left without saying goodbye. Swallowing her pride, Zainab goes to the Post Office to collect the keys. Inside, she finds Shabnam with dozens of tea lights alight. After Shabnam reassures her family that she wouldn't have gone without saying goodbye, the Masoods gather around and wish her well on her travels.

Meanwhile, Dawn, Darren, Minty and Billy are no nearer to finding Jay. However, to make matters worse, Billy remembers that Derek from Social Services is due to visit today! As Dawn's about to call the police, Jay emerges. Billy's elated that he's alive and well. Dawn hugs Jay, clearly thankful that he's returned, but soon admonishes him for running off. Jay tells her that he wishes she was dead, not his dad, prompting an upset Dawn to run out with Summer. After Derek has been and gone, Billy and Jay have a heart-to-heart. Jay, however, is not pleased when Billy suggests he apologises to Dawn.

Over at Garry and Minty's flat, Jay's talking to Dawn in an attempt to overcome their differences. Garry overhears their conversation and walks out of the flat, deflated. He heads across to the Vic and thrusts the bunch of flowers in Billy's hands. Billy, however, is just happy that Jay and Dawn are actually speaking.

Elsewhere, Max talks to his solicitor about Tanya and Jack's plans to move with the kids and his eyes light up when his solicitor suggests his course of action; Max cancels Jack and Tanya's ferry tickets; Phil tells Suzy that Ben has to come first in his life; Bradley tells Max exactly what he thinks of him; Max wrestles the 'sold' sign to the floor; Max confronts Tanya about the move to France; Max and Jack come to blows; and a drunken Max stumbles across the gun at Suzy's…
