PC Roger Valentine (John Bowler) arrives on the doorstep of hysterical Joanne Riley (Stephanie Schonfield), whose eight-year-old daughter, Bethany (Lauryn Quelch), has gone missing. Bethany’s father, Bob (Geoffrey Freshwater) is horrified to hear the news but John’s suspicions are aroused when Bob can’t provide a solid alibi for his whereabouts that afternoon.

Elsewhere, DCs Grace Dasari (Amita Dhiri) and Mickey Webb (Chris Simmons) visit pupils who were outside the school where Bethany went missing earlier that day and arrive at Mason Kemble’s (Richard Wisker) house. While being questioned, Mason shocks his mum, Susie (Vicki Hopps), by telling the officers he saw his dad, Ryan (Steve North), in his van outside the school. When Ryan returns home, Grace and Mickey search his vehicle and discover Bethany’s cardigan. Ryan is arrested for kidnapping and is taken away, while a distraught Mason looks on.

Back at the station, Ryan is interviewed and swears he has nothing to do with Bethany’s disappearance. He explains that he works at the school and found the cardigan earlier that day and meant to return it to the young girl. At sunrise, a police team along with Bob, who is determined to help, continue to search the local area. A black bag is soon discovered in the river and Bob pushes past officers only to break down when he sees it’s just a bag of rubbish.

However, the morning takes a sinister turn when PC Arun Ghir (Abhin Galeya) and Inspector Rachel Weston (Claire Goose) finally uncover Bethany’s body. Convinced that Bob’s raw grief is is genuine, the investigation against him is dropped. Officers are further frustrated when Ryan is released due to lack of evidence. As the case continues, the officers are shocked and disturbed by evidence that reveals a new suspect.

Gravely examining the evidence from young Bethany Riley’s (Lauryn Quelch) murder, officers reach the difficult conclusion that her school mate, Mason Kemble (Richard Wisker) was involved. DI Neil Manson (Andrew Lancel), DCs Grace Dasari (Amita Dhiri) and Mickey Webb (Chris Simmons) are faced with the difficult task of questioning Mason at home, much to the shock of Mason’s parents, Ryan (Steve North) and Susie (Vicki Hopps).

After discovering further evidence proving that Mason was present at Bethany’s murder, Neil gently arrests Mason, who is led out of the house and, surrounded by journalists, is put into the patrol car which speeds off. As the car later pulls into Sun Hill, officers stop what they’re doing to watch the young boy being brought into custody on suspicion of murder.

Elsewhere, PC Roger Valentine (John Bowler) arrives at Joanne (Stephanie Schonfield) and Bob Riley’s (Geoffrey Freshwater) house and is forced to push through the photographers to explain that Mason has been arrested for the murder of their daughter. Back at the station, Grace and Mickey question Mason, with Susie present. Grace becomes increasingly frustrated when Mason refuses to answer her questions properly and is disturbed by his behaviour.

As tension continues to mount outside the station, with reporters demanding answers and Grace losing her cool in the interview room, officers decide to bring in Ryan, the father that Mason clearly worships. Ryan, clearly horrified at the allegations, agrees to help the officers by questioning his son and during an emotional conversation, Mason finally reveals the truth.
