Scenes of a paedophile preying on a teenager in pre-watershed soap EastEnders has led to scores of complaints.

Viewers have hit out at what has been dubbed the most controversial story-line on the show ever, featuring a pervert's relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

On Friday viewers of the show were introduced to new character Tony, boyfriend of Bianca, who has just been released from prison.

Controversial storyline: The character of Tony King, left, will abuse his stepdaughter Whitney Dean in a new EastEnders plot

But his character, played by Chris Coghill, is shown have a romantic relationship with schoolgirl Whitney, who is the step-daughter of Bianca.

Tony has been shown kissing the girl passionately after sneaking into her bedroom while his girlfriend was in the bath on Friday night's episode.

The pair were then seen falling to the bed, implying that the couple were engaged in a sexual relationship.

The programme depicts the girl's character as a willing participant in the romance, something which has also upset some viewers.

On Monday's episode the character was back in the girl's bedroom, telling her "You look just like that same 12 year-old girl I fell in love with."

He encouraged her not to wear make up saying she looked 'incredibly beautiful without it'.

When the character of Whitney, played by 16-year-old Shona McGarty, said she felt naked without it - to which he replied: 'What's wrong with that?'

There have already been almost 70 complaints to the BBC and Ofcom and the storyline has only just been introduced on the long-running soap.

This controversy comes just a month after a knife murder on the controversial show caused 134 complaints after a dead body was shown.

That saw the death of character Jase Dyer, played by Stephen Lord, as he was set upon by a criminal gang who stabbed him.

Earlier this year BBC bosses revealed EastEnders was the most controversial show on the BBC last year, attracting 5,500 complaints from viewers.

That was more than double the number provoked by any other programme.

Viewers expressed their anger about the latest antics on the show on the BBC's message boards.

One said: 'I am totally disturbed by tonight's episode...I can barely talk. The storyline with Whitney & Tony is terrible. I am aware this type of abuse is going on in some homes but is this really the only way to get the message across.

'It is appalling that my daughters watch this just before bed. This is a family show and I think I should be able to choose how I approach/inform my children about abuse. Not via EastEnders.'

Another added: 'I too find this quite distasteful for a programme scheduled in the early evening...I watch soaps for enjoyment, not for public service messages.

'This is not enjoyable and I think has now gone too far.'

The BBC said the episodes had been incredibly carefully thought through and that the broadcaster had worked with the NSPCC on the storyline.

Copies of the script were said to have been sent to the charity, who returned them with detailed comments.

The controversy over this and last month's row is the latest in a long-line of recent complaints about episodes of the soap.

Media regulator Ofcom censured the BBC in June this year for EastEnders scenes in which a character was drugged and buried alive.

The regulator had received 116 complaints from viewers who said the scenes featuring character Max Branning were 'unsuitable' for the time when they were aired.

In February the BBC1 soap was once again found to have breached TV regulations after showing a gang attack on the Queen Vic pub.

The episode also showed a pregnant woman going into premature labour after being knocked over during a fight.

Today a BBC spokesman said: 'This is a difficult and challenging storyline, but one which keeps with the tradition of the show for tackling difficult social issues such as domestic abuse and mental health in the past.'

He added: 'All the content on screen adheres to the BBC's editorial guidelines.'

At the weekend the BBC's drama chief Jane Tranter defended the storyline as a 'fantastically good idea'.

She said: 'The big moments in EastEnders, those iconic pieces of television history, tend to be things that are incredibly near the knuckle, and are actually quite difficult subjects to raise in the context of a family sitting room.'

People must be blind and deaf if they are not aware of any controversial storylines so they should not let their kids watch the soap if they don't want them to know about paedophiles or gang crimes etc. I personally think that watching these developments in a soap could help youngsters to identify with situations in their own lives and seek help they might not otherwise.

I think this is the best storyline done by any soap. Young girl who don't know any better are probably in relationships with much older men and don't actually realise it is abuse. Also it shows to women who's partners are behaving strangely towards their children that it may not be a usual Father/Daughter relationship.

im getting annoyed now, not only by people continuously complaining about ee over every storyline they seem to show, but also the people who use the reason that its a "family show". ee, and other soaps in general, are primarily adult shows in the sense that very young children shouldnt be watching them. i cant believe all these people who let their young children watch it and then complained it was unsuitable didnt know that this storyline was going to happen, i know not everyone reads spoilers etc but its been all over the papers for ages and was the main story in the majority of tv mags for last week, im very surprised that these people had absolutely no idea this storyline was going to be shown. i personally wouldnt let a young child watch ee, not just cos of the storylines that have been complained about, but also cos of the everyday storylines, such as violence, affairs etc i cant see how these people think that is ok for their children to watch but this storyline isnt

imo i think ee is right to show this storyline as it seems it has been very thoroughly researched and it is highlighting a very dangerous and important issue which doesnt seem to be very widely talked about. if it manages even to help one teenager in the same situation than thats great and will hopefully make others more aware before getting into a similar situation themselves. unfortunately nowadays, child abuse is happening quite a lot, and although these parents might think their children are too young to know about it and think ee shouldnt be telling them, i think their children should at least be aware of the dangers of paedophiles/strange men (and women) even if you dont want to go into too much detail

anyway, i dont think ee have shown too much graphic detail in this storyline yet, quite a lot of it has been implied or through dialogue, so if these children are as young as these parents are saying they are, then they probably wont really understand whats going on anyway

sorry for the essay, it just annoys me people feeling the need to complain about every storyline as soon as it starts!

Hopefully this won't stop Eastenders from carrying out this controversial storyline how they want to portray it.. viewers are so sensitive these days and the people that complain do really need to get a life, or open their eyes to the real world, as abuse like this does happen in the real world and all I can do is congratulate Eastenders on being brave and portraying this storyline - they've done a good job so far.

If viewers keep complaining like this, soaps won't bother to try and portray any controversial or gritty storylines or push the boundaries with what they show in fear of 'offending' or 'frightening' viewers, and soaps would therefore becoming very boring!

Despite the PC bunch wantin go bury their heads in the sand. Grooming of young people is happening everyday and if showing it in a soap is a way of young people being made aware of the dangers, then this is a positive step. As DM said EE is not a family show and it is up to parents what programmes they approve of children watching. We have known for weeks this story was being aired and EE would have had to have the plotline approved by the BBC months ago.

Eastenders isn't glorifying it, nor are they showing anything graphic! If tackling a taboo subject to raise awarness cant be shown as it will upset people, then what kind of society are we living in?

I'm sure this storyline will save a lot of peoples lives, as people who realise they can stand up and speak out about people abusing them, and it will teach parents to keep an eye out for this kind of behaviour in the family.

If we were never shown things like on tv, we wouldn't realise that things like this happen.

What do these people want to watch? These people should stop watching Eastenders if they're going to complain about everything!

I don't think it is encouraging paedophile, it is doing the exact opposite. it is shown the control the have, the blind eyes that are turned, how the child actually thinking it is love when it really is abuse. It is only starting the base for this storyline and it will have to develop to see how to go about getting out of this abuse.
I think it is a great storyline as this does happen everyday, it is been ignored cause people don't want to discuss it. It is the old "Well it doesn't happen in my area" syndrone.

I dont understand why people complain, we were warned about the storyline, or at least given the imression something was going to happen. My daughter whos 10 watched Friday's episode with the kissing scene and didnt raise a eyebrow, but then after Monday's when Tony wanted to put a lock on Whitneys door she did ask me why he would do that so after explaining to her that Tony was a bad person who was trying to take advantage of Whitney I explained that it probably was best that she doesnt watch Eastenders in the evening but when she comes home from school on On Demand so ive had a chance to watch it first and check its suitable.

the only thing thats sick and disgusting about the storyline is that there are actually people like this in real life! yes tony is creepy, and the scenes can be uncomfortable but if this is the reaction its creating then it can only be a good thing, i cant see anyone sitting there thinking "that looks like a good thing to do"!

They don't have much to watch, have they? In soaps, most situations are implied and not graphically shown, Tony and Whitney kissed and kind of laid down on the bed, then they showed a different scene. It is up to everybody themselves to assume what might have happened next, I can't see this being something a pervert would get off on. So far, EE have handled the storyline very well, we are learning that Tony has been grooming Whitney for a number of years by telling her he loves her and that they will be together openly once she is old enough, and she is in love with him, therefore does not regard it as anything wrong. If the story is handled like this in future, NOBODY as a reason to complain, paedophiles live amongst us, whether we like it or not and if parents don't want their children to watch these issues being raised in soaps, they have to stop their children watching tv, it is as simple as that. Sorry for the long rant. :)

Do these people just live in their own cotton ball world were nothing bad ever happens? I think it's good and brave of the show to tackle this subject

The thing is, EE is a lot different to Corrie and Emmerdale. The show tackles subjects that the others don't, like sexual abuse and gangs. Up in the Dales everything is rosy red, there are no big time criminals or abusive parents.

I haven't seen EastEnders since Friday so I can't comment on them. However, as it has been planned with the help of the NSPCC, I can't imagine that the storyline would gratify paedophiles.

People who say it's sick and they don't want to see it on tv obviously have a blinkered view of the world. Lots of kids are abused and this storyline is highlighting one aspect of it (the child believing that they love the abuser) and I'm sure it will go on to show what happens once the child speaks out.

I think a lot of good has come out of Soaps tackling 'taboo' subjects in the past, in giving these things a greater profile, getting people talking about them, and in educating people.

At the end of the day, people have a free choice in what they watch...they can always turn over to another channel...instead of watching.

I think personally EE has and always will be the whipping boy of the soaps and its clearly a case of it being damned if it does and damned if it doesn't....there will always be people ready to complain about the programme, even though they know that EE is one of the more grittier soaps, and should adjust their viewing habits accordingly.
