I was just watching the Welsh news and this story sort of stood out. It's disgusting!

A young mother has been given months to live after a hospital failed to diagnose that she had skin cancer.

Tara Jones, 26, of Treorchy in the Rhondda, was given the all-clear by the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant after having a mole removed in 2005.

But new tests showed it was malignant and the cancer had spread. She said it was now too late for treatment.

Cwm Taf NHS Trust confirmed it was involved in a claim relating to a delay in diagnosing cancer.

Ms Jones said she was hoping to live long enough to see her two children - Tyler, six, and Lowis, three, - open their Christmas presents this year.

"I will never see them grow up, their first day at comprehensive school, their first boyfriends and girlfriends," she said.

"I am going to miss it all. It's just too unbearable to think about."

Ms Jones said the mole had been sent away for tests and a week later she was told it was harmless.

The mole I'd had removed in 2005 had been cancerous all along

But a friend whose mother died of cancer recognised some of her symptoms and insisted she had a second opinion.

She said a doctor from the hospital visited her at home to tell her about the error.

"He told me there had been a terrible mistake. The mole I'd had removed in 2005 had been cancerous all along," she said.

She has now appointed a solicitor to fight a case of medical negligence.

A statement from Cwm Taf NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, said: "We are able to confirm the trust's involvement in a claim in the delay of diagnosis of cancer.

"But unfortunately the trust is bound by constraints of confidentiality and cannot comment further at this time."

A spokesperson for the Welsh Assembly Government said: "We deeply regret hearing of cases like this and the minister would expect the trust to undertake an urgent inquiry into the matter."

How sad is that? And three years later! It's totally ridiculous!

Thats awfull!! I wonder what happened to make them misdiagnois her like that? I mean, surely its pretty obvious if its cancerous or not, if you are in their field?

The NHS is a shambles. I had a stroke about 18 mths ago. Went to the hospital and they said yes it was and that I would need a CT scan as well as a load of tests. Foolishly I thought that they would carry them out there and then. Approx 2 weeks later I was sent for the CT scan. Like a fool I asked the Radioographer when I could expect to here the results. She replied if its anything serious they will be in touch.

Fortunately I am in BUPA and phoned a consultant on the Friday and saw him on the Monday. On the Wednesday I had MRI scans and on the same afternoon spoke with the consultant who informed me of the results. He told me I should not be driving and refused to let me even travel to Scotland the following day. On the Thursday of the following week I was in hospital and had major surgery to clear a blocked carrotid artery which had caused the stroke in the first place. Four weeks after the surgery I received a letter from my local NHS hospital with an appointment with a consultant.

The rest is history.

The health service is a disgrace you would think we were back in the 1940's the way things are run. There was a story on the news up here a couple of weeks ago where a man was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he spent all his life savings over £12,000 and shared it among his family only to find out a few months later that he doesn't have cancer at all but a pulmory breathing illness. He now has no money to support the care he needs.

It's an utter disgrace.
We've had so many problems with it.

When my mum was about 8 months pregnant with my brother in 2003, she had an asthma attack (which she had with me my sister and my brother at about the same time) and so we went down to the hospital and were told that she would be seen straight away. My mum was put in a side room that could only just fit the 4 of us in, with a bed and my mum had the - damn it words gone, the mask they give you that have ventolin and things in it, for around 3 hours. A doctor came past once and my Dad was asking him what was happening and they said they didn't know. We did get seen for another 2 1/2 hours and then they said my mum had to stay in hospital.
Also when my mum actually went into labour, as she uses a ventolin inhaler it was actually slowing down and almost stopping conractions. When they midwife (not her usual one) saw the notes that she had asthma, she asked if she was uses her inhaler and then told my mum that they give it to people who have gone into premature labour to try and stop it!
They're sooo not with it anymore.

It's partly the reason that I don't want to be a midwife anymore.

thats so awful for the poor woman! the state of the nhs is disgusting! they say they urgently need more nurses/midwives etc but cant employ most of the ones that are qualified due to lack of money yet they employ other people who really arent needed for the same amount as they could employ 5ish nurses etc!

The NHS is beyond a joke these days. Something similar happened to my friend's mum. She had a mole removed about 2 years ago because it was cancerous and was given the all clear. She had to go to the hospital every few months so they could check that the cancer hadn't come back in another part of her body. They'd been checking her lungs and stuff but they didn't bother with her brain. Towards the end of June after an emergency brain scan (which took them like a week to give her an appointment for ) they found the cancer was there and they couldn't do anything. She died last month the day after two of her daughter's birthdays.
