View Full Version : Tony King (Chris Coghill)
I am loving the build up to Tony, also like the guy who will be playing him Chris Coghill
I thought he went to prison for getting caught in a buglary or something not for hitting a lad who was trying it on with Whitney
Also on another forum, we came with the theory that he might have been grooming her and making her feel good about herself (like a little fling), and yet not had a physical relationship and then when she realises its wrong what they are doing she says no and he then rapes her as there's been rumours that he brutally rapes her
Finally he is arriving on 12th Sept - cant wait :D
Tuesday 9th September
Bianca is frustrated that she doesn't have enough money to throw a big party, in tonight's visit to Albert Square.
Friday 12th September
Bianca gets everything ready for the homecoming party.

Is this Bianca jail bird lover getting out and coming to the square, is this the guy I read about that had been interfering with her oldest daughter. And starts it all but up again when he comes to the square.

I think it will be a very intresting and intense storyline and i think that the Jackson family are the right family for it. They seem to be the ones that face the most issues in life. And also wont it be charma for Bianca after what she did to Carol???
The way i am seeing this is that Tony/Whit are kinda having an affair, but since she is underage can it be classed as child abuse???
I think EE will make it look like an affair esp as Whitney never seems like she is scared of him and also is waiting for him to come esp she isnt keen on getting a boyfriend as Bianca wants her to as in week 36 or week 37 spoilers
Also on digispy forum on Tony/Chris Coghil thread we have come up with so many theories
INSIDE SOAP PREVIEW
This autumn, EastEnders will tackle one of it's most controversial storylines ever, following the arrival of Bianca's ex-con boyfriend, Tony King. It'll immediately become apparent that he has, for several years, been having an illegal sexual relationship with the redheads underage stepdaughter, Whitney. And when the truth is finally revealed, poor Bianca's world looks set to fall apart...
''Bianca and Whitney will need support from their family when the affair is exposed,'' explains Charlie. ''They've both gone to Bradley for help before, and I'm sure they will again. These days, he's there for everyone. He should become a counseller!''
So basically he is having an affair with Whitney and not in the sense of the word 'abusing' her because she is consenting to it. Or thats what she thinks.
She is still underage so it is still technically child abuse but in her mind they are just having an affair and nothing is wrong.
More than likely he will have groomed her into thining it is ok for them to be together and probably told her that when she is old enough he will dump Bianca and be with her.
I think the storyline could be less to do with the actual abuse but more to do with how someone can mess with your head so much and make you think something is right when its not. And how he actually groomed her into thinking this way and thinking it is ok. How a child can be trusting in the adults around them. And how a peadophile works. Making her beleive that someday they will be together properly.

I think it's an interesting way to approach it, with Whitney consenting, makes it all the more sinister that he's groomed her.

I loved Chris in Burn It that was on BBC 3 couple of years ago and then recently i saw him on Doctors
This Friday's episode of EastEnders sees the arrival of Bianca Jackson's (Patsy Palmer) current boyfriend Tony King to Albert Square after serving a stretch for ABH. In one of Walford's biggest storylines of the autumn, Tony - played by 34-year-old Chris Coghill - returns to his family and it soon becomes apparent that he is abusing his step-daughter Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty). Here, Chris chats to us about the challenging nature of his role, his research and his sinister look.
What were your immediate thoughts when you first discovered the nature of the character?
"My first thought was that it's only acting and I'm not who I'm portraying. My second thought was whether the character and storyline was going to be portrayed responsibly. I'd only looked over two scenes, but had to be reassured that it would be done sensitively and not sensationally. I went in to speak to [our executive producer] Diederick [Santer] and Julia Crampsie, the casting director, and they reassured me quite quickly."
Is Tony a slow burner of a character?
"Not really, no. You saw almost straight away the nature of Tony and Whitney's relationship - it was the last scene of his first episode. But the true nature of it all isn't revealed until a bit further down the line."
What's the mood like on set when you're filming scenes with Shona McGarty? It must be difficult with it being such a delicate issue.
"The final scene of my first episode was one of the scenes which I read in my audition. Shona's fantastic to work with. She's very natural, very instinctive and a natural actress. There isn't any uncomfortable feeling at all."
Does Tony love Bianca? Or Whitney? Or both, but in different ways?
"Unfortunately, Tony doesn't really love Bianca at all. Bianca is a cover for him to give this picture of a 'normal existence'. What's very important is that abusers do tend to groom a whole family, rather than just the victim. That's the backstory for Tony. He entered the family as a hero figure. He told them all that he'll look after them, even to the extent that when Bianca was pregnant with Morgan, he said that when the child was born, he'd be the father. He's actually named on Morgan's birth certificate, but clearly he's not his biological father. From the beginning, Tony was building up the picture that he was the family's saviour. So for those reasons, his relationship with Bianca gives him the cover he needs to the rest of the world."
What kind of research have you done for the part? It must have been a huge undertaking.
"At first, I had a couple of very long meetings with the writers and Diederick. We talked a lot about a backstory for Tony which had been talked through with the NSPCC. From talking to the them and reading case studies, it became apparent that the way the story was being written was very true to life."
Did you watch EastEnders prior to landing the part?
"Yeah. Over the years, I've always dipped in and out. One of the things that I was so pleased about when I landed the part was that I was going to be working with Patsy Palmer (Bianca), Sid Owen (Ricky) and Pam St Clement (Pat). They're old school EastEnders, the people who I feel are the heart of the show."
And what about Maisie Smith (Tiffany)? She's such a fantastic young actress.
"She's hilarious. I'm not entirely sure how old she is, but if I'd been given the lines to learn that she has and delivers them the way she does at her age, I wouldn't have been able to do it. All the kids are great and having them on set can be hilarious. Especially 'Crazy Maisie', she's bonkers."
Have you prepared yourself for the backlash on the streets when Tony becomes the most hated soap character in Britain?
"I haven't prepared myself yet, but I'll be going out to buy myself a very large hat, wig and a false moustache! Obviously there's a small proportion of the public that believe soaps are real, but I do put my faith in the other 99.9% of the population that would probably just say 'oh, there's that actor who plays Tony' rather than 'there's that nasty man from EastEnders.'"
From the publicity shots, it looks like you've got your sinister look down to a tee already!
"I've always been able to turn on the sinister look. Sid Owen said to me that all I had to do was tilt my head down and look up and it's there."
Roll on Friday, can't wait to meet this guy
I loev Chris i can't wait to see him in this.
Chris is a great actor, i loved him in Burn It - so cant wait to see him
Just read Inside Soap, didnt buy it but this is what i remember from the article
* He doesnt love Bianca, he's heartless, cold and selfish.
* He's told Whitney that when she reaches 16, they will run away together but actually when she is 16 to him, she's reached her sell by date
* He's doesnt like the fact she's had her nose pierced and puts make-up on and also doesnt like the fact she's got this other life that he's not part of (like school, friends, etc) and kinda doing things without him
* And the play is what he uses as a cover to spend time with her, so the family think they are rehearsing
* He's very jealous when Bee teases that Peter and Whit will have to kiss
Chris Coghill is a brillant talented actor and a great addition to the cast.

This sounds like a brilliant storyline, however Tony sounds like he is very controlling towards Whitney.:hmm:
I think he will be, since he's been in prison for ages, he will want that hold and control on Whit again

There is mention of a shock pregnancy for either Whitney or Lauren
I have been wondering whether Whitney becoming pregnant might lead to Tony's downfall. I hope that this storyline is coming to an end soon as I am getting bored with Tony blowing hot and cold towards Whitney but I expect that they will develop his relationship with Lauren a while longer :(

Elsewhere, Whitney's play is a huge success, but she has other things on her mind.
i wonder if this has anything to do with the pregnancy?
I think I read somewhere that Whitney sees tony buying Lauren something really expensive or something like that.. i think that might be on her mind that she knows he has moved on to Lauren

That sort of mirrors the brookside storyline with the body under the patio, when mandy and daughter beth killed husband/dad trevor and buried him under the patio because he raped mandy and was abbusing his two daughters.

Surely the message they want to give out is that you tell the police and the pedophile gets arrested/convicted for their crimes? Silly Eastenders!
Whitney confesses all to Bianca on the 16th Birthday Party and Tony is arrested
SCHOOLGIRL Whitney Dean is left devastated when her romance with pervert Tony King falls apart.
The youngster, who has been in the paedophile’s grip since she was just 14, believes they are about to flee Walford and start a new life together.
But her dreams are shattered when Tony (Chris Coghill, 33) secretly bins her passport, making it impossible for her to leave the country.
As Whitney (Shona McGarty, 16) prepares for her part in her school play, she has not got a clue about his plan to ditch her.
But as she celebrates her 16th birthday on December 8, he finally drops the bombshell news.
Actor Chris Coghill is to make a dramatic return to Walford as his EastEnders character Tony King stands trial for rape.
Tony was last seen in December as he attempted to flee the Square when his partner Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer) discovered that he had been having sex with her stepdaughter Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) since she was 12. The police, however, arrived in time and arrested him for raping a minor and he has since been remanded in custody.
In November, the case finally reaches court and while the Jackson family rally around in support of Whitney, the youngster becomes more and more confused.
As her nerves begin to take hold, Whitney begins questioning whether she can pluck up the courage to testify in court and whether she even wants to see Tony convicted at all.
Due to Whitney's age and the nature of the offence, she is eligible to give her evidence through live video link, as opposed to standing in the dock and facing Tony.
Speaking of his comeback, Coghill said: "I'm really pleased that I have the opportunity to come back and finish this storyline. When you are given a storyline which has had so much extensive research, it is only right that it is given closure in a realistic manner such as this.
"I hope by EastEnders tackling this sensitive issue once again, it can continue to raise awareness and show people in similar circumstances that they shouldn't be afraid to stand up in court as they will not have to face their abuser."
Executive producer Diederick Santer commented: "One of the unique things about EastEnders is its ability to play stories over months and years. Chris agreeing to come back for these episodes will enable us to continue showing the long terms consequences of Tony's abuse of Whitney and - I hope - continue to do justice to the issue of child sex abuse."
The BBC soap has worked closely with the NSPCC during its extensive research in a bid to ensure the story is portrayed as realistically and true to life as possible to raise awareness of child abuse.
John Grounds, Director of Communications at the NSPCC, added: "EastEnders has already performed an admirable job in raising awareness of child sex abuse and showing the damage it can cause its victims and their families. Now the Whitney storyline is moving on to the criminal trial and will show that, although there may be difficulties, it is important for children to get the full support they need to bring their abusers to justice."
Coghill - who returns to filming this week - joined EastEnders in July last year and made his screen debut in September. His character had spent a year in prison for common assault and appeared in Walford to join Bianca and the children.

I agree its a good move, we need to see the outcome of this
It was a storyline that rocked Albert Square and left the lives of Whitney and Bianca in tatters.
But evil predator Tony King is going to get his just deserts next month, when his case goes to court.
The monster, who pretended to be devoted to Bianca while seducing her underage stepdaughter, is to be sentenced to a massive 13 years behind bars.
A show source says: "He'll get the maximum sentence for raping and grooming poor Whitney, who was just 12 when the abuse started. Everyone is very relieved that he'll be caged for a long time and she'll be a fully grown woman by the time he gets out."
In emotional scenes, nervous Whitney will give her evidence via a video link, before Tony is sentenced on December 14. Gripping stuff.

Pictures from tv.sky.com showing Tony and Whitney at the trial
Former EastEnders star Chris Coghill has admitted that he struggled to find work following his controversial role as Tony King.
The actor joined the cast of the BBC One soap in July 2008 as paedophile Tony King, who became involved in a child abuse storyline with Whitney Dean, who was 15 at the time.

Speaking to The Sun, Coghill said: "EastEnders killed my career a bit but to play Tony was such a great acting part because it was so far removed from myself.
"I play wrong 'uns in everything! When I got the script for this I was like, 'Oh, he's really nice, let's look at the next episode. Oh, he's still really nice, and the next one - oh, gosh he's still really nice!'"
Coghill's EastEnders storyline went on to spark more than 200 viewer complaints to the BBC and Ofcom, though the broadcasting regulator eventually ruled that the issue was handled "appropriately and sensitively".
Whitney's story also inspired several victims of child abuse to inform the police and Coghill admits he is proud to have been part of the plot.
He said: "I got a massive array of people coming up to me and saying, 'I think you're brilliant in EastEnders and what you're doing is really important'.
"As a direct result of that storyline, about ten people said, 'That happened to me', and went to the police and there have been quite a few convictions.
"Being an actor doesn't really change people's lives but without being a w**ker, that did. And I'm proud of that."
revisited now his son around
