View Full Version : Moles and Skin Cancer
Im going to the doctor on Tuesday, as Im going to have to get a Mole checked out.
Im not really sure why im posting this thread as it could be nothing, but the only person that knows about this is my mum, im too scared and worried to tell my friends or anyone else when it could be nothing.
Hads anyone else had worries like this, or had to get a mole checked?
I have no idea how Im going to explain things to my doctor, since the more recent change happened about 2 weeks ago now, but as soon as we came back off hoilday we made an appointment, it was just I asked to see a woman doctor so thats why the soonest I could her a doctor was Tuesday.

My mum's had a few moles that could have turned cancerous removed. But if you have worries, it's always better to go and check and it be nothing then leaving it, better safe then sorry.
Here's a website:
http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/facts/moles.htm
Good luck :)
Thankyou
Yeah Ive been on the website, since Im become kinda paranoid about the whole thing, Ive looked at good trustworthy webistes like that. Including the nhs and cancer research and it freaks me out that the symptoms I have shown do indicate it could be cancerous or turn cancerous. But I know I shouldnt think like that and wait and see what the doctor says, cos Im started to freak myself out.
Its the whole thing has become quite compliacted.

The most important thing Abbie is to stay calm and try to keep positive. I had a similar problem where I had to get checked out a few weeks ago and that would be my best advice - stay calm, keep positive. Try and do things that will take your mind off worrying about it (I know that would be difficult).. but keep yourself busy, go out with friends etc - just try and erase it from your mind, that's what I did.
The good thing is that you have booked an appointment with your doctor, as that is advised when you find moles etc. I know what the paranoia and worry feels like, but the best thing to do is just as I say, try and keep yourself busy and the doctor will check it out Tuesday. :)
Hope it all goes well.

I had a friend who had a mole removed from her face, she had it for years and it was removed under local anesetic. She was fine, she said that if she knew it was that easy she wouldn't have waited until adulthood to get it removed.
Did it take long? I been between having the appointment to getting it removed?
Its just I have dance show soon and dont want it to get in the way

No she was in and out in the same day Abbie that's why she was shocked that she had waited until she had grown up to get it removed.
 OMG, thats quite scarily quick.
So she went to see her doctor about it and the doctor removed it or was it like another place she got it done?

No she had it for years on her cheek, then one day it started changing slightly and growing so she went to the doctors. They referred her to the hospital and they booked her in to remove it a few weeks later.
Oh right. I hope if that happens to me, its one of those appointments that you can have some choice over so ot doesnt affect my dance show. Plus mine is nearly 1cm and half in diameter which is worrying me a bit cos that a lot larger than what they have said moles should be on the all the websites Ive read. It says that removing larger moles are harder too
My dad saw a skin specialist about two moles on his face. The woman removed them straight away rather than waiting for another appointment. I think in the case of suspicious moles doctors will always try to remove them straight away rather than waiting for an appointment when things could have got worse.
That's quite shocking that you can't get an appointment until Tuesday. At my practice we can only book appointments for the day that you ring up, unless it's a medication review which can be booked up to a week in advance.
Like Dave said, keep positive. You're very young to get skin cancer.

What does the mole look like?
Well I live in a small town that is overly populated and have a very small doctors surgery, a bigger one is being built cos so many more people have starting living here in the past 5 years.
Plus I asked for a female doctor and up until tuesday they are all male.
I just wouldnt feel comfortable with a male doctor, as the mole is on the side of my breast
What does the mole look like?
Okay, well firstly its on the side of my breast, which Im not sure I should worry about, maybe Ive just been unlucky in where it is?
So its nealry 1.5cm in diameter. Its quick a dark brown with a smaller even darker brown patch in the middle and recently it now has a light brown all the way round, which has made it, well bigger. Theres also a small dark brown patch on the light shade of brown. Oh and its not a perfect circle shape either.
Sorry to be so descriptive, I just dont know how to describe it any other way.
The main reason I decided to go see a doctor is cos on hoilday I think the mole might of bled. The only reason why I say think, is cos when I looked at it, it was like, you know if you cut your finger a little and its like a small ball that dries? It looked like that but very dark, like a brown.black. Anyway the next day that bit was gone adn underneath is was red like a very small wound. And I been very small.
Now me describing all this and comparing it to the stuff ive read on moles it really really doesnt sound good at all. But Ive always had this mole. It was small on my side and well then I got boobs and as they got bigger so did the mole. I just thought that was the reason it got bigger. Cos it was a big mole, compared to my other ones for a long long time, It was recently that all the above started happening.
:o Sorry for the long description

Tabbie, I have gone to the doctor in the past about a couple of my moles...he booked me in to have them removed a few days later as a precaution. Thank crunchie they turned out to be okay, not cancerous... but its always best to get them checked out and sounds like you have acted straight away in getting an appointment. I also have a couple of large moles (sounds like yours) on my body – I just keep vigilant and keep checking on them regularly.
.
A friend of mine didn’t act when she noticed the mole on her leg had grown and changed colour, also it became itchy. Her mole had become cancerous by the time she finally went to the doctor, months later, and she had to have the skin around the mole, plus the mole removed.
I know you can’t help worrying about it. I think acting upon any changes straight away is a very good thing, and I think, that the mole being in the place where it is (where it doesn't get exposed so much to the sun) is a good thing too.
Just try and relax till Tuesday. All the best! :)

hopefully itll be nothing to worry about. but its good that you booked an appointment straight away cos the risks will be lower than if you had waited. my grandad had a mole removed from his face a few weeks ago and it only took about 20mins to remove it. although they said his wasnt cancerous it might have kept growing. all hes had to do now is go back a few times for them to check on it and change the dressing, it was pretty straightforward. try not to worry about it (i know thats easier said than done) and i hope everythings ok
It's much better to get it seen to now. My friend's mum had one on her neck for years and didn't start worrying about it until it bled. It was then that it had turned cancerous. Best to get it removed now I'd say if they offer it as once it had turned cancerous it then took them 2 operations before she got the all clear.
Thanks, I am glad Im going to get it check out, whilst dreading it, incase it is quite bad or something. Im already stressed enough at it is at the moment.
Well I guess I'll see tomorrow

Okay, I'm worried now 'cause I have one that is, reading your description, practically the same. I have it,my mum has it and my nan has it in the exact same place of the top of our right breast, close to my underarm. :/ I've never thought anything of it though really as we all have it.
Hope everything goes ok at the doctors. x

Ive always had the mole its just in my description, well those changes have all happened recently. Before it was slightly smaller, eventhough it was always on the large size andit was just the one colour, and never botherd be before
Okay Ive been to the doctor, she says it looked and felt okay, but because of what happened on holiday and it was a while ago so there is nothing to show for it, she said its best to get it checked out at the hospital. So I have to wait 2 weeks to here for an appointment

glad the doctor didnt think it was serious, hopefully the hospital appointment will be ok too :)
Im more nervous about the hospital appointment, cos when I told my mum, she was like, 'yeah sometimes they do remove them anyway'. Just need to wait and see when it is now

they will only remove it if they think there's a real need to, especially if the mole is quite big. I know from a friend who wanted them to remove quite a big (1cm) mole.
Thast the thing mine is bigger than 1cm
I know people who have moles that are the same size as yours, and they have been fine. But they have been told to make sure they are always covered from the sun. As they're on her stomach, she always wears Tankinis when she's on holiday, so it's not too bad.
I think the main reason she is sending me to the hospital is cos of the change in size, slight colour and the werid thing it did on hoilday where I think it bled, but it was just odd

Did you catch it on something, is that why it might have bleed?
Thats the thing, I couldnt have, I would have felt it if I did. And, well its just cos of where it is I dont see how it could have been caught. Its always covered by either my bra and top, or a Bikini

That's why she went to the doctors too. They told her it was ok at the minute, but to always keep it covered from the sun to stop it getting cancerous or anything.
EDIT: But as i said, they are on her stomach, so they are easy to keep covered. You might get told different if they are in an exposed place. Or they might just remove them to be safe.

A friend of my mum's had one on her leg and they moved her just to be safe and when they did remove it they sent away for some tests. Luckily they all came back ok but I think i'd rather be safe than sorry.
Maybe if they do remove it they'll do the same thing.
Yeah, at the moment, Im not even thinking about the fact that it could be cancerous or anything harmful, like my doctor said cos of my age and the mole itself doesnt look too bad.
I know I shoudlnt be worried about if they do remove it. But if they do, would it leave a scar and would it be difficult cos of the size and where it is. Thats all im worried about now. I just hate the fact that I have to wait a few weeks to hear from the hospital about an appointment. But thats how things go I suppose
Yeah the waiting lists now are ridiculous, and two of my friends have lost relatives because they've tried to take short cuts in treating them.
Hope everything turns out ok for you; as your doctor said, 17 is very young to get anything serious like cancer.
My friend's mum had a scar on her neck after she had a mole removed, but that was only because the mole had been left so long that the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes. It wasn't very noticeable so even if you do have to have the mole removed I'd imagine you'd have less of a problem with scarring because of where your mole is.
I just got a letter today and found out my appointment at the dermatology clinic is this wednesday. The 17th, as in not tomorrow but the day after :(
Thats really quick, if it needs removing they wont remove it then will they?

They might not want to remove it Tabbie, if they are happy with it...they might just ask you to keep a 'mole diary' instead (there is such a thing)! And go back in 6mths/year to review it.
True.....but in all honesty when my mum saw the mole she was like, yeah abbie that needs looking at and given the size and just the apparence of mole my mole I wouldnt be surprised if they do remove it! Plus I want it gone! Its just, everything seems a bit quick all of a sudden

good luck at the hospital Abbie. Everything will be fine.
Went to the hopsital today, felt really silly cos I had to wear one of those gown things (cos i had to take my bra off)
Basically Im going back in 4 months to get it checked again, he said that the only concern at the moment is its size and growth, he didnt seem bothered that it bled :searchme: well anyway because of where it is, it would leave a scar thats worse than the actual mole, cos of the tissue being different. SO cos of this he doesnt want to remove it unless he really thinks its very suspicious and dangerous. so after all he said I understood that if it was anywhere else they would have removed it as caution anyway.
He also confused me, when he was saying if it did get removed it would be by surgery and not biopsy or one of them, I got really confused, all I know is I going back in 4 months
Can you go back to your doctor's surgery and perhaps ask the nurse or your GP to explain what the hospital doctor said? Lots of patients don't understand all that they get told by consultants or the remember questions they would have liked to ask after they have seen the doctor. It would put your mind at rest rather than worrying for the next 4 months. Good luck with the op. xx

Tabs, if you are confused and still uneasy about it, go back and see your doctor. He I'm sure will be glad to explain it to you.
I think that the consultant doesnt want to remove it, if its okay because you will be left with a big scar, because I think they would have to dig quite deep (hence the surgery). He would have removed it straight away, if he thought it was cancerous.
Just keep a close eye on it, and if you are at all unhappy/see a change in the mole (however slight) go back to your doctor and ask for a second opinion or to see the consultant sooner.
Take care and I know that it must all still be a worry for you, but the fact he hasnt/doesnt want to remove it, I would say is a good sign. :)
Oh no I do understand what I need to know cos my mum came in with me and she translated
Im not actaully having an op though, in 4 months I'll have it checked again and well dunno what will happen then, he measured it so im asuming he'll remeasure it when I go back and see what happend from then
okay so i've had a tiny mole on my chest since birth and the last couple of days its gone a bit scabby, its raised a bit and sensative around the sides, it might just be a spot has grown under it, i get a lot of spots on my chest, but it may be something else. i'm worried as i remember someone saying that if a mole ever changes you should see a doctor
but i feel stupid going to the doctor so soon over something trivial. i'm putting savalon on it all the time, how long before i should go see a doctor about it?
Go now, I mean Ive had this mole for years and I got mine checked out when it started changing and I thought I would go have one appoinment and it was over but on the safe side with me I have to go back in months
If you think its important go
i think i need to give it a week, i'd feel like an idiot going to the doctor for him to say it's nothing. saying that i dont even know if i have a doctor anymore down here.
Yeah but just remember the ABCD rules and how long has it already been like that?
I'm well worried now!!!! :crying:
NOOO! I didnt mean to worry you these are probably nothing but I just think id rather go to a doctor and them tell me its nothing and get iver myself than anything else?
i'll go to the local surgery tomorrow and see if i can join this books, then just have a quick 5 minute appointment for the doc to check it out. i just hope i dont have to have any scans or surgery or anything!!!
Im sure you wont but even if they need to gove you something, it could just be cream or soemthing to clear the area up???
See a nurse if you can't get to see the doctor straight away, you are not wasting anybody's time when you want a medical condition checked out, even if it turns out to be absolutely nothing to worry about. The medical profession prefer to tell patients that they are healthy rather than that they should have come earlier to prevent their condition worsening.
it's gone, thank god! it died down a few days after, so i didn't need to see the doctor! what a releif!

Well Im digging this thread up again cos Im going back to the doctors.
I never went back to the consultant 4 months after the first time I saw him, cos I didnt get anything from the hospital with an appointment like I was suppose to. Anyway there was no change so I just left it cos it would have been pointless anyway and this was way back in jan/feb
So.......the thing is now about a month 2 months, I spotted 2 little white spots on the mole they are quite small and visible. Anyway a week ago I told my mum cos they havent gone away. I was suppose to go yesterday but they had to change my appointment and I couldnt go today cos I had an exam so im going on wednesday
I just wanna go and get it sorted now and see whats up cos I think I can see another 1 or maybe 2 appearing

I'm sure it will be nothing serious Abbie. Let's know how you get on.
Went to the doctors, Im going to go back to the hospital he said I was the 3rd person he had to get in touch with the hospital cos they didnt follow up with the second appointment
Oops I forgot to come back to this thread. I saw the specialst at the hospital again and he said like the other one said before it looks like a birth mark mole. The size was the same which was good and no other serious things wrong. I obviously have to be very careful in the sun with it but its covered anyway.
They wont remove it unless they thought it was harmful cos of where it is horrible things would happen. It cut a long list short it would be like plastic surgery gone wrong
So anyways he told me to take a picture of it every 1-2 months so I can doument it and he gave me a ruler thingy to measure it proerply and for it to be in the photo as well
And they also gave me a leaflet on what to look for
