holby.tv can confirm that spin-off HolbyBlue has been axed.

The police drama will not be recommissioned for a third series following discussions between the BBC and production companies Kudos and Red Planet.

The show recently endured disappointing ratings after being shown against popular ITV show The Bill, a mistake which could have seen the show's failure to build up it's own audience.

HolbyBlue is a co-production between Spooks producers Kudos and former EastEnders writer Tony Jordan's company, Red Planet.

The Red Planet Pictures drama executive, Claire Phillips, said: 'HolbyBlue set new standards for 8pm dramas, in terms of production values, storytelling and casting.

'We are extremely proud of the 20 hours of HolbyBlue that we produced but following discussions with the BBC, the decision has been made not to make a third series.

'Red Planet Pictures' focus is now on developing shows which will live up to those high standards set out on HolbyBlue.'

Its a shame its not getting a 3rd session - it could have really got going then. The 1st season is always the tester, the 2nd cast are more comfy in the storylines etc and then 3rd season is where everything comes together (well maybe not in this case lol)

Some of the storylines were really good.

It was up against a long running police drama that gets good ratings every week. Why they chose that slot to air a new police drama is beyond me. Did they really think that it would go up againt The Bill and come off better?

I was thinking this. The BBC really messed up with its scheduling. They should have maybe had it on Tuesdays at 8pm, with Holby Blue and Holby City alternating every 6 months.

i just about stuck with series one but then really got into series two, some of the storylines were brilliant. its a real shame its been axed but then isnt this what happens now, you just get into a programme and they axe it!

no matter how gritty it tried to be, it was always going to be compared to the Bill, especially when they put the two shows head to head. there's only room for one cop show, and as it turns out that cop show is The Bill.

shame it was axed i liked it. Its a pity they don't put something like that on a sunday, with an exception of heartbeat there is nothing to watch on sunday anymore.

the bill is my favourite programme and would always watch that first but most of us are capable of recording holby blue or they could have just put it on another time. it was the bbc's fault for expecting it to do well against the bill.
