CORRIE bosses are to introduce the first LESBIAN character in the soap's history.
The move means knicker-stitcher Sean Tully will no longer be the only gay in Weatherfield.

Our source at Granada's Manchester HQ said: "Corrie lags behind on issues of race and gender.

"Executives want to create a soap which is representative of society in 2008 and they are acutely aware they need more gay characters."

Executives had planned for Rovers barmaid Violet Wilson to be gay when actress Jenny Platt first joined the soap in 2004.

But her character gained massive popularity by romping with Jason Grimshaw and Jamie Baldwin.

Our source added: "Violet was pinpointed as the one character they could take down that route but they went cold on the idea and cast her as straight.

"It does seem ridiculous it has never been explored on Corrie but that's all about to change."

Actor Antony Cotton, 32, has been a huge hit with fans for his portrayal of camp Sean. Now bosses are preparing to hold castings for his gay girl sidekick.

i can see that when i think about it, i remember when she first came in Violet was quite hesitant about doing anything physical with Jason, they could have taken it from there.

but i dont like the idea of them bringing a new character in simply to be gay, like it's the single defining feature of their personality. it was better when it was a character we already new like Todd, coming to terms with their sexuality.

Well Sean certainly hasn't been a "huge hit" with me.. I hope Corrie do this right and she isn't simply brought in to tick a box and she's not just there to be the token lesbian. I want the character to have some depth and not be known as "the lesbian character".. I hope she isn't another stereotype either like Sean Tully is as that isn't representative of the gay/lesbian community.

I look forward to how Corrie tackle this.

I am in the age (many moons ago) when if you were "gay" there was something wrong with you:nono: .

Thankfully, thanks to the news that one of my relatives was "gay" I've learned alot.
However I hate the word Lesbian :wall: it is so "STATEMENT" my relative who is a lesbian likes to be known as a GAY GAL and I personally think this is so much nicer  .

WE are all familiar with the "butch dyke" and this is so sterotype, the majority of "gay gals" are not like this, but very girly and femine.

I would love to see a very femine, loving, family member, gay gal.
WE have SEan Tully as the typical "camp" gay and he has been widely accepted, which has been good, but lets not go the only route associated with GAys, and sterotype them.

I have met some lovely GAy people and had my horizons broadened, so bring it on, lets stop living in the dark ages, the GAy community are human too, not two headed monsters, and we must remember that, and treat each person accoring to their perosnality!
