I heard on the radio today that the government will be introducing harsher punishments for people who dangerously drive ... (using a mobile phone or if drink and drugs are involved).. people who do one of these things will face 7 years in prison, if two of these factors are combined (Say someone has been drinking and are also using a mobile phone whilst driving).. they will face up to 14 years in prison.
Do you think this is a reasonable punishment? Should they be tougher on dangerous drivers? Or should they be more leniant?
(By the way I don't know if these apply for dangerous driving causing death or just dangerous driving in general, so if anyone could enlighten us on what it applies too then that would be good. :) )

I think it should be harsher. They are hardly enforced enough as it is. I once saw a program or a news report and on it a man was fined more for hitting a tree than another man that killed someone.
I think they should be harsher I'm sick of hearing about car crahses maybe this way people will learn
Laws on driving under the influence really need to be reviewed.
Death by dangerous driving is no different than shooting or knifing someone. It's still murder, regardless of the circumstances. Murder carries life, DDD should too. There should also be a lifetime ban. A fine isn't going to have much effect on the offender.
Some of the lesser offences carry more severe punishments than I would have expected. Failing to provide a sample: six months inside, £5k fine, driving ban and up to 11 points on the license. If only that idea could be applied to the more serious crimes.
There was this guy in the news recently who was on an expensive racing bike and killed a young woman because she did not manage to get out of his way as he came racing down the narrow lane or so, he only got fined just over £2000, his bike cost him nearly £5000. That cannot be fair, a young life lost for ever for the price of a push bike. I agree with stricter fines, the amount of people I see on the mobile phone, I nearly got run over by a young driver mounting the pavement I was walking on to drive around some traffic waiting to turn into a car park and she was on her mobile. I had to get out of her way smartly or else I would have been hurt or killed even.
I think the whole legal system and punishments need reviewing personally. And I think its about time that life meant life etc, but thats a whole different thread.
