EY UP, there’s trouble on the street. Veteran Corrie extras are on the warpath — after being bumped off to make way for younger faces.

And to rub salt in the wounds, the new crop are showing themselves up by asking the show’s stars for AUTOGRAPHS on set.

Some “background artists” have been seen strolling down the cobbles or supping a pint of Newton Ridley in the Rovers Return pub since the ITV soap began back in 1960. But some of the Weatherfield old guard are being phased out to give the Street a fresher look.

The move follows our earlier revelations that new Corrie producer Kim Crowther is considering dumping some of the older stars.

Last night one extra fumed: “We’re really annoyed. We’ve been professional and loyal to the show for years but it seems it’s a one-way street.

“The new lot are inexperienced and make the actors feel uncomfortable by asking for autographs.” But a show source argued bosses had to refresh the extras to reflect real life. The insider said: “We need to get the balance right otherwise the Rovers would be full of pensioners.

“Pubs across Britain— even local ones — just aren’t like that.” But one angry extra hit back: “If you go to a pub like that around Manchester you’ll find lots of older people.”

A Corrie spokeswoman said: “We always strive to ensure that extras are relevant to scenes being filmed.

“There is always therefore a mix of both newer and long-serving extras.”

What is it with producers of TV shows rarely showing older people? They do exist and without them there would not be any young folk

But the market in EE is manned by all the same people and they are not all 20 year olds either

I wonder if the producers are complying with age discrimination laws :hmm:

I notice the old people in the background. There should be a good mix of younger and older people in it. There's too many older people imo, especially as there's quite a few old main characters who are always in the Rovers.
But I do agree that asking for autographs is fairly childish.
