EASTENDER Wellard is going to the great kennel in the sky, TV Biz can reveal.

The lovable alsatian — actually a bitch called Kyte — has grown too old for acting.

And we can reveal that Wellard, originally owned by spotty Robbie Jackson, will be killed off.

A source on the show said last night: “Wellard has been played by three different dogs from the family — Kyte, her mum and grandma.

“But now it’s time for the character to bow out gracefully.”

Wellard first arrived in 1994 when Robbie — played by Dean Gaffney — found him wandering the streets of Walford and started feeding him.

He later took him in and the newcomer lived with the Jacksons until Robbie left to go travelling in India.

Since then poor Wellard has been on a merry-go-round of homes. Robbie left him with his sister Sonia (Natalie Cassidy).

But she could not cope and asked Gus (Mohammed George) to take him in.

Gus handed Wellard to pal Mickey Miller (Joe Swash) when he left. But the Millers could not handle another pet in the house and encouraged Mickey to get rid of him.

Mickey recently sold the dog to Vinnie, who swapped him for Pat Butcher’s pineapple bucket.

And Bianca Jackson’s kids, Whitney and Tiffany, are now Wellard’s proud owners.

He has had lots of ups and downs — including several run-ins with Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) after stealing food from the cafe.

Wellard once bit Ian, who retaliated by reporting him to the council.

Gus then had to hide him in the allotments — and Ian was later forced to back down.

Last year Wellard was dognapped by Jay Brown, but quickly released.

And Gus was sick in April after evil Sean Slater tricked him into believing he was eating Wellard in a spaghetti dish he had made.

Sean then set Wellard free, but he found his way back to Gus.

NOOOOOO :crying: :crying: :crying: Perdita loves Wellard

they could actually do something with this and give bianca's kids a story line other than being naughty - what trauma do kids go through when a beloved pet dies????

The canine actor who plays Wellard in the BBC soap EastEnders is going to retire, it has been announced.

The Alsatian, a bitch called Kyte, has grown too old for acting and viewers of the BBC soap will see Wellard killed off later this year.

Wellard has, in fact, been played by three different dogs from the same family — Kyte, her mother and grandma.

Wellard arrived in Walford in 1994 when Robbie Jackson, played by Dean Gaffney, found him wandering the streets.

Merry-go round

FAMOUS SOAP DOGS
Willy: EastEnders
Schmeicel: Coronation Street
Bouncer: Neighbours
Batley: Emmerdale

After learning the newcomer had been mistreated by his owners, Robbie took the dog in and named him Wellard for "well hard", meaning very tough.

He stayed with the Jacksons until Robbie left to go travelling in India and he was passed to his sister Sonia, played by Natalie Cassidy, to look after - who passed him on to her friend Gus.

When Gus left, also to go travelling, with his girlfriend in May this year, Wellard was passed to his friend Mickey Miller.

The Millers could not handle another pet so Mickey sold the dog to Vinnie as a present for Shirley, but she did not want him.

Bianca Jackson's daughter, Whitney, then traded a pineapple for Wellard.

Robbie and Wellard were best friends

The dog has had his fair share of ups and downs. In February 2003 Robbie's move to India was delayed when his beloved dog was run over.

Two years later Wellard was incarcerated after biting bit Ian Beale, Adam Woodyatt, on his bottom.

Campaign T-shirts and posters with the slogan Walford One Owed Freedom (WOOF) were designed to help raise awareness of the dog's plight.

Following a trial Gus was allowed to take Wellard back home as long as he kept him on a lead at all times.

In 2007 Wellard was taken from outside for the cafe. The kidnappers demanded money but he was quickly released.

dont think it will be anything explosive, found this on msn:

Wellard is played by an Alsatian bitch named Kyte, and the character is apparently going to be put down, The Sun reports.

I wondered when this would come. I mean, this is soapland, but a dog can't be immortal or anything. Also, larger dogs tend to live for less time than smaller breeds, so he's had a good innings in terms of his age, really.

After he's been on the show for 14 years, I think they'll make it tragic. I don't think it'll do much good in turning the Jackson kids away from being naughty, to be honest. I think Whitney will be gutted after she tried everything to get him from Vinnie for Tiffany, and looked really upset over the whole thing. But Tiffany didn't seem to want Wellard when she got Albert, and I think she'd have got bored of dogs quite easily - she hasn't spoken about one for weeks.

i dont get the big deal, he's only a dog? granted i'm not an animal lover, but it's not like Wellard has contributed anything to the show in the grand scheme of things.

I bet they'll play that soppy instrumental ending when he dies in little Tiff's arms

EASTENDERS bosses will have to re-edit scenes of mutt Wellard’s death — because he was breathing.

The lovable alsatian, who first appeared in 1994, is put down after developing acute pains.

Owner Bianca (Patsy Palmer) calls in a vet to give him a lethal injection.

But as his eyes close and Bianca bursts into tears, Wellard could be seen breathing.

An insider said: “Yes, it does look a bit suspect. We will have to do a quick re-edit.”

The scene will air next month.

He's lived surprisingly long for an alsatian and had no apparant problems associated with the breed.

Can't say I'm particulary fussed that he's leaving, I don't think he added anything to the show.

yeh he does get put to sleep in the end, something suddenly becomes seriously wrong with him i think. this is what it said about it on ds:

Thursday 14th
Ricky discovers Wellard lying on the floor in the lounge - he's seriously ill.

Friday 15th
Bianca's late for work and finds Tiffany lying on the floor next to Wellard, who hasn't touched his bacon sandwich. Later, Whitney finds Wellard lying motionless on the floor. She immediately calls Bianca who rushes out of the café. Bianca storms into the cab office and tells Denise that they need to get Wellard to the vet quickly. Libby covers for Denise and she quickly drives Bianca and Wellard to the vets.

While at the vets, Denise and Bianca realise that they have more in common than they originally thought . They've both been through heartache and awful relationships and agree that their lives are now about their children. When the vet emerges from a back room, he informs Bianca that Wellard's very ill and should be put to sleep. Knowing that the kids will never forgive her, she decides to take Wellard home.

Once home, Wellard's lies in front of an electric fire as Tiffany strokes him, while Ricky and Bianca reminisce about the good times they've had with him. Despite being besotted with her canine companion, Tiffany tells Bianca: "I think he just wants to sleep, mum." The vet enters the room with Bianca, while Liam gives Wellard one last hug. Ricky walks out of the room and pats him on the head as he goes. As Bianca struggles to hold back the tears, Tiffany gives him a big hug and a kiss. With Tiffany and the kids in the kitchen, Bianca tells the vet that she's ready…

I can't think of any of my dogs that have died peacefully in their sleep! So for me, this is for once, pretty realistic!

I was amazed to read that Wellard is 14 though - has it really been that long!

Kim

It hardly ever happens nicely, which is why so many dogs end up being left at the vets to be cremated. The only one I can think of is when my dog was taken to the vets for something and given some type of treatment, but later died in front of the fire. I hope someone remembers to phone Robbie and Gus, it would be totally unrealistic if they didn't know.

This is about the only way they can actually write him out, other than the unrealistic peaceful death. He could never have had an operation which he died during, as no vet would operate on a dog of this age because of the anaesthetic.

Well Honey won't be up, that's a sure fact. I can imagine May being up, and Wellard probably, because it's going to be a sad exit even without considering the amount of time that he's been on the show. I don't think a dog's been up before, so he might also be up because it's something different.
