Anyone here who is trying to stop smoking?
I Want to stop it, but right know i am hooked, mostly i am afraid that if i stop smoking i will gain a lot of pounds, and i am rather big over my belly allready.
So anyone here who has my problems?
If you have i tried we could have group therapi?

I think putting weight on is less detrimental to your health than carrying on smoking. Quit the fags, join slimming world (or equivalant).

Smoking speeds up the metabolism so you burn calories faster. Stopping smoking generally causes the metabolic rate to drop, hence why some people put weight on.

i dont smoke myself, but my sis friend tried to give up smoking. she went to a hypnotist and it worked (well til she was in a car which ran an old lady over so she had a fag and started again). but yeh that seemed to help

Running an old lady over is a good enough reason to start again imo.

I stopped smoking 7 years ago, and a couple of times before then. This time round it will be for good because for some reason I feel badly nauseous if I get only the slightest bit of smoke in my nose  I went on patches for a couple of weeks to stop be becoming narky with the work mates, waited for OH to work away from home for a couple of weeks to stop him mithering me and after two days never thought about a fag again.
One saying a friend of mine, who has sadly lapsed a couple of times but gets strength from it is: NEVER GIVE UP GIVING UP. Don't feel too bad if you succomb to weakness and have a couple of ciggies when you shouldn't, but start giving up again.

My sister in law used Champix and she is off them totally now. I tried before but couldn't use the patches as they burnt my skin (I know ouch)... I eventually went back on them cause my mum said she could live with me anymore cause I was a right cow to everyone

I've chosen my giving up date haha.. September 1st. I know it's a long way from now, but I'm gonna need them over the next few months I reckon. I don't want to go on the patches, I don't like gum, so I dunno, might just do the tablet ones? Anyone tried them? Not gonna go cold turkey though ha!

There is also an inhalator and nasal spray that you can use. List of Nicorette (http://www.nicorette.co.uk/stop-smoking/products.aspx) stop smoking products.

You can get nicotine replacement therapies on prescription. I don't know if they are available for everybody or if there is a criteria to meet. Worth a visit to the GP to see.

There's no point trying to quit when there's other stuff going on, you'll just get even more stressed and light up.

I am going to try to stop when i am out of them, i like menthol cigarettes a lot, but really am going to try to stop it, instead of the cigarettes i am going to try chocolate, it is a lot cheaper then nicotine patches!.

Has anyone tried chocolate instead of smoking?....:cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

I found a week in hospital with Gall Stones worked a treat for me, came out and said to myself if i can go 6 days without one then why bother to start again, so glad i stoped saves me a fortune, and am loving the smoking ban in public buildings.

same here i gave up when i was 16 weeks pregnant, i just couldnt stop before then. I ended up in hospital ahving a cyst removed and obviosly couldnt nip out for a fag, 4 days of not having one and i just couldnt be bothered!

of course i do sometimes think ooo i could kill for a fag now but havent had one! i cant belive how much money i used to waste on fags!

Tell me about it. It's so expensive :crying:. I must waste 20 quid a week on it. Less sometimes though.

Keep a diary for a month on how much you've spent on cigarettes times that by 12 you could see what amount of money you could save a year by giving up! :D

Unless of course you smoke Vanilla tobacco which I did, which didn't taste as gross (although a lot of people thought I was smoking something completely different)

I had a choice, baby or fags, so I went to the hypnotist and gave up from that day 3 years ago.

I did go to my GP about it, but there was a questionnaire to fill in and lots of criteria to be met (down here anyway) in order to receive the giving up smoking stuff on prescription.

Good luck to all those that want to give up though.

All the best, hope you can stick to it. Just remember not to eat two big chocolate cakes every day though. If you increase your exercise straight away now you should be able to keep your weight in check.

My Dad gave up by hypnosis he never smoked after that, he's actually really anti-smoking now!

I can't say I've ever been tempted though, my dad's friend died from lung cancer when I was young and watching him sitting in a wheelchair white as a ghost, coughing and still smoking was enough to put me off!

I stopped smoking on 11th November last year.

I just stopped. Didn't use anything.

I actually found it really easy. I discovered that worrying about not giving up was actually much harder than doing it!!

The local health authority run courses round here that can be really useful if you want to quit.

I have put on a stone and a bit since i quit but i am losing that now and couldn't be happier!

Like someone else said, i'm loving the smoking ban in pubs - definately made the habit easier to kick.

Good luck :cheer:

I have never smoked so I don't understand what the cravings feel like but my niece smoked for 10 years up until last August when she was seriously ill and was in intesive care for 3 weeks since last year she hasn't touch a cigarette since and has no desire to.
