IAN Beale is as much a part of EastEnders as the Queen Vic or Arthur’s bench.
But despite being the only original character from the BBC1 soap, Adam Woodyatt, who plays the weasley chip shop owner, didn't think that Beale the Squeal would last longer than three years.
He said: “I feel quite honoured in a weird way. I never thought I’d still be there after three years never mind 23.
"I may be the only remaining original character but June and Pam have been with me since 1985 and 1986 and some of the crew from the first episode still work there so it doesn’t feel like I’m the only one.”
The 39-year-old admits that he still likes his character despite Ian's tendency to be snivelling and irritating.
He added: “Where do I start, he has got so many changeable facets. I guess I don’t dislike anything about him at the the moment.
“Someone’s got to like him!”
