EastEnders star Samantha Janus has admitted that she goes to bed hungry each night because she is desperate to stay in shape.

The 36-year-old actress, who plays Ronnie Mitchell on the BBC One soap, claimed that she would be out of work if she did not battle to maintain her figure in this way.

"I go to bed hungry every night. It's a shi**y way to live. It's terrible and if I'm honest, yeah, it upsets me deeply," Janus, a mum of two, told the Sunday Mirror. "I miss being able to eat whatever want - I love food and love eating.

"But if I've had a big dinner or gorged on the kids' leftovers I'll eat virtually nothing the next day. Maybe a bowl of porridge or a salad to try to even it out."

"I'm not a character actress," she continued. "I'm known as a femme-fatale actress who's got older. If I let myself go and put on weight, no one would employ me. I'd love to think it wouldn't matter, but I have done it - and I didn't get any work. This is the way I make my money and support my family and I have to do it properly. And if I don't do it, I don't have an income."

Samantha also said that she can understand why celebrities like Victoria Beckham and Nicole Richie resort to extreme lengths to stay thin.

"At least I'm honest. I hate the way size zero women lie and say they eat normally," she said. "Women like Victoria Beckham and Nicole Richie haven't always looked that thin. Being a size zero means your bones stick out and you get a bum like an 80-year-old. But I know why they do it - because there is huge pressure to look your best."

This comment no doubt will encourage some youngsters to do the same, even if they don't want to join tv land

I sympathise. I've been in the same situation as her and still am to some extent. The only difference is I do it for control, not because I want to be a stick, although when I'm having a bad day its sometimes appealing. I'm a control freak.

I don't eat much at night time but can't sleep if I am hungry, so just a couple of pieces of toast or some cereal would do it.

I hope it doesnt influnece other people. I sometimes go to be hungry but I eat A LOT, like more than I should so its good that I stop

Normally I don't eat before going to bed but if I'm really hungry it's only going to keep me awake so I have a piece of plain bread.

I think a healthy diet and exercise is probably healthier than how she describes her diet. Eating leftovers and then eating virtually nothing the next day? That can't be good for you...

I don't think she needs to look slim and thin to be employed? shes a very good actess anyway. i dont get where shes coming from with the "no one would employ me" thing?

Ditto. Cheryl Ferguison's popular to have landed a contract, and she's not thin. I guess it wouldn't really suit her role as Ronnie though; with the Mitchell Sisters coming from Ibiza fashion and party orientated. She definitely doesn't need to be as extreme as she is though.

I never knew it makes you loose weight?! That's soo wierd.. I usually have dinner around 6-7 and if I am up late (like I am now) then I feel hungry (like I do now) but I just cba to go downstairs and get something to eat but in the morning my weight isn't that different or anything?..
I don't think she should have 'published' this tbh, pointless and dosen't help the whole size 0-00 situation!
