Rob James-Collier has admitted he is "glad" to be leaving Coronation Street, saying he wants to ditch his sex symbol image.

The 31-year-old, who plays Liam Connor on the ITV soap, told New! magazine that winning the sexiest male prize at the British Soap Awards for two consecutive years influenced his decision to quit Weatherfield.

"In a way this is why I am glad to be leaving the show," he said. "You can work your nuts off acting-wise, but as soon as you appear on screen in a towel, bingo, you're the sexiest male."

The actor added that he will be careful when it comes to choosing his next job and won't fall into the soap star trap of doing pantomime.

He said: "I won't be doing panto. I want to be taken seriously as an actor and that means landing the right part."

I suppose that this means he will not be back. :( Whilst he appears a little conceited and arrogant making this statement, I am sad to see him go.

I think its a shame, I mean we can see where he is coming from, he just needs to say it in a nicer way

The Corrie role made him i had no idea who was before that role and so what he is hot he should be happy and proud he won sexiest male two years in a row

Let's see if he sticks to his words but by not doing any panto work. James better watch he doesn't make the same mistake that so many other soap stars have and bite the hand that feeds. He may be miffed at winning sexiest male twice but at least Corrie have given him a job that he may have to return to in a couple of years.

I dunno. I don't think he sounded conceited. As an actor he wants recognition for something more than his looks.. is that so wrong??

I don't even think he said it in a bad way . Maybe that's just me though. Sounded like it was something he was just saying really.. in a casual way.

He made his decision to leave way before he won the second award as sexiest male, didn't he? I appreciate he wants to do other things, I think it is just that he made the decision so soon after joining Corrie that most people find hard to understand, I would not say he is typecast just yet.

He announced his decision early this year in late January, I believe and the Connors only arrived about two years ago.

Maybe it's just what they've given him to do, but he doesn't really come across as a brilliant actor. Thought his acting was good in the baby story though.

I know he was good in that. I just think that, okay 2 years is a long time, but not really to show off your acting skills, as in soaps you need to give it time and wait until your given amazing storylines

That is what I am thinking, I think he is a good actor but has not given it enough time for storylines to develop for him to get his teeth into apart from the baby story, which he handled very good. I will admit to finding him very easy on the eye but I am not as obsessed with him as some other forum members are with certain young people in a London based soap, I just hope they don't kill him off and that one day he might be back.
