View Full Version : Cat trouble

The problem is..
The little cat (Penny) keeps chasing the big cat (Basil). E.g. When he comes in the cat-flap, no matter how asleep she is she'll run into the kitchen and try and jump on him and wants to play. But she doesn't know when to stop. (Even when he's hissing at her) But he hardly ever tells her to back off, even though he is twice her size and is perfectly able to, he just runs away.
Our old cat used to give Basil a pat round the head when he was a kitten so he learnt when to stop.
Any suggestions on how to stop (or lessen) her behavior? Thanks in advance. :)
I would have thought that Basil would box Penny's ears if he really was bothered by her attacks. How old is Penny and have you had her for long? Perhaps Basil is a real gentleman tomcat? Do you intervene when you see this happening? Sorry for asking so many questions, I just try to get a better picture.

No it's fine asking questions :p
Penny is about 11 months and Basil is nearly 5. We've had Penny since she was a kitten (and Basil also).
Basil is a real gentlemen  He'd rather run away than hit her, he's too laid back :p They are never vicious to one another. Sometimes he joins in and they playfight but it always ends up with him running off anyway.
We try not to intervene, just leave them to it because I don't think shouting at a cat does much, just spooks them, but often we get up and separate them because he's getting himself upset and especially at night we don't really want to encourage Basil to stay out for hours. (We live by a busy main road and there are a few urban foxes around).
They have been known to sleep near each other without any problems so I don't know if she's just doing it for attention when we are around. :searchme:
I should also add that Penny is a tortoiseshell, I don't know if that gives her a more energetic temperament :p
Maybe Penny is interested in something more than play fighting, if you get my drift.

We've decided to test her out with a cat her age (once we find one!), see how she reacts/gets along with other cats. Then we might get a cat (rescue one) a bit younger than her so she has a playmate. I think it's just she's bored and wants to play! She doesn't like to venture out of the garden much so it must be boring for her lol

Lmao that second picture is funny. Looks like she's laughing..
"Wait a minute, you smell awful. Eww *cat laughs*"
Then she decides... "Screw it.. I'm only young once... *cat pounces other one*". "Hubba Hubba" :)
