Sky One is to resurrect 1990s Saturday night action game show Gladiators, it has confirmed.

The show, which sees members of the public pitched against "gladiators" in physical games and tasks, originally aired on ITV.

The new show, due to start in May, will feature some of the original games including the joust, "hang tough" and the final eliminator.

Sky said a brand new line-up of gladiators would be unveiled in March.

The 12 new gladiators will hope to follow in the footsteps of the originals - including Hunter, Wolf and Warrior - who found fame through their roles.

'Contender' search

The programme, which ran from 1992 to 2000, was presented by former weather presenter Ulrika Johnson and ex-footballer John Fashanu.

The new version will again be fronted by two presenters, yet to be announced.

Sky said 30 "contenders", to be chosen at open auditions, would battle it out to become series champion.

Sky said it would build "one of the biggest studio sets in UK television history" for the show.

The original Gladiators was filmed at Birmingham's National Indoor Arena.
