Opening Music

In the cafe

Opening music

Ian: Marie could you take over for a bit here? I need to pick the twins and Bobby up from school.
Marie: Couldn't Jane do it?
Ian: No, she's taken the day off today. She's worn out with work. I'll be back soon.
Marie: Ok then.

Fade to club

Max is sitting moodily drinking a pint. Steven joins him.

Steven: Do you mind if i sit here?
Max: No, go ahead.
Steven: Why are you all alone?
Max: Oh my family walked out on me.
Steven: I'm estranged from my family too. It's been weeks now.
Max: Yeah well...two of a kind...
Steven: Yeah. I went to see Jane once to apologise. Ian threw me out.
Max: I did the same with Tanya. She slapped me.
Steven: Well I'd better be going.

Steven leaves and seeing Stacey sitting on Arthur's bench sits beside her.

Scene changes.

Jane puts her pasta onto a plate and turns the wrong ring. She turns the correct one and switches the flame off but forgets to switch off the gas ring she turned on.

Return to Arthur's bench

Steven: Hi
Stacey: Hi Steven
Steven: You sit out here a lot nowadays.
Stacey: Yeah.

Pause

Stacey: Do you ever have any regrets in your life?
Steven: Yes.
Stacey: So do I. I wish I could make up for them but well...
Steven: I wish it too...that i could wipe out the past, start on a clean slate.
Stacey: Family is always helpful if you have it. Uncle Charlie and Sean are standing by me stll and I'm glad of it.
Steven: I know what you mean. I still have nana Pat and though Ian won't let me near Lucy we do meet in the street sometimes and she squeezes my shoulder to let me know she's there for me.
Stacey: Two of a kind.
Steven: Max said that.
Stacey: You've seen Max?
Steven: Yeah, he's sitting alone in the club.
Stacey: Most people are over the Vic at the moment.
Steven: Can we ever make up for what we have done?
Stacey: I suppose we could, eventually.
Steven: I'm losing hope.
Stacey: Don't do thsat. Your time will come.
Steven: Are you sure?
Stacey: Yes.

Pause

Steven (suddenly): What's that?
Stacey (getting up): What?
Steven: Smoke, fire - oh my God it's the Beales house.
Stacey: Steven wait.

Steven runs off with Stacey in hot pursuit.

Stacey: Steven, what...?
Steven: Phone an ambulance and a fire brigade and find Ian. I'm going in.
Stacey: You can't, it's too dangerous.

Steven ignores her, breaks down the door and charges in. Stacey telephones and runs to the cafe.

Stacey: Where's Ian?
Marie: Gone to collect the children from school. Why?
Stacey: His house is on fire. Look, hold the fort, I'll get Pat.
Kevin: I'll fetch Pat.
Stacey: Thanks. I must get back to the house, Steven's in there.
Kevin: What?
Stacey: He broke the door down and dashed in.
Kevin: I'll go back to the house. You get Pat.
Stacey: Ok

Kevin returns to find Steven lugging Jane outof the house. His arms are covered in burns ad Jane is unconsious.

Steven: Where's Ian?
Kevin: He's not here. Steven, do youneed any help?
Steven: Ring him.
Kevin: But your arms...
Steven: I said ring Ian.

Kevin fumbles for the phone just as the ambulance arrive, with the fire brigade closely following.

Paramedic: What's happened?

Steven: This is Jane Beale. I got her out of the house. She is unconsious. Kevin Wicks here is about to telephone her husband.

They lift her into the ambulance.

Paramedic: Aren't you going with her?

Steven: No, it would be better if I didn't.

Paramedic: But you saved her life.

Steven: I'm the black sheep of the family, she wouldn't want to see me, I'd better go.

Paramedic: But your arms are burnt

Steven: Forget about that. Just get Jane to the hospital. Her husband will join her soon.

Steven leaves.

Kevin: I'll go with her.

The ambulance leaves with Jane and Kevin. The fire brigade start to close the place off as Stacey and Pat arrive.

Pat: Where is everyone?
Fireman: The injured lady was taken away by ther ambulance. A man made a phone call and accompanied her.
Pat: That would be Kevin.
Stacey: Where's Steven?
Pat: Steven?
Stacey: The last I saw him he broke down the door and dashed into the house.
Pat: He's not...?
Fireman: If you are talking about the lad who was just here, no, he's alive but his arms are badly scarred. He disappeared after ringing us up and helping to get the lady in.
Pat: Well thank goodness he's alive. Stacey, find Steven and stay with him. I'd better wait here for Ian.

Fade to the hospital

Jane: Kevin, what happened?
Kevin: The house caught fire and we managed to get you out. Ian will be here soon, I've rung for him.
Doctor: You're perfectly fine Mrs Beale. We've had you checked over. (To Kevin) Are you...?
Kevin: No, I'm just a friend. Her husband should be here any minute.

Ian arrives

Ian: Oh Jane...
Jane: Where are the kids?
Ian: Pat is looking after them. How are you doing?
Jane: The doctor said there is no lasting damage.
Ian: Thank goodness for that. Kevin mate, we owe you one.
Kevin: What?
Ian: You saved her, rang the ambulance, rang me, came with her here...
Kevin: No, it wasn't me.
Ian: What?
Kevin: I rang you yes and came with her in the ambulance but...
Ian: Oh stop being so modest Kevin, you saved her life, how ca we possibly repay you?
Kevin: I didn't. It was Steven.
Ian: What?
Kevin: Yes, he was sitting on the bench talking to Stacey when he saw the smoke. He dashed over and before Stacey could stop him broke down the door and disappeared into the house. I was in the caff when Stacey came to get you. She went to get Pat and I returned to find Steven lugging Jane out. I wanted to see to his burns but he insisted I ring you and he himself rang for the ambulance and the fire brigade and then he went off afterwards saying something about Jane wouldn't want to see him and being the black sheep of the family.
Ian: Are you serious?
Kevin: Yes.

Ian stands stunned.

Jane: Is that true?
Kevin: Yes. Listen, it's none of my buisines but whatever Steven did to be estranged from the family - well he's certainly made up for it now hasn't he?
Ian: Yes, he has.
Jane: Go and find him Ian, and thank him.
Ian: But...
Jane: yes, forget the past, bury the hatchet. I'll be quite safe here.
Kevin: I'll stay.
Ian: Thanks mate. Yes, I'll go.

Fade to Slaters house

Stacey: This may sting a little.

She applies hot water to Steven's burns, and sorts them out with a first aid kit.

Stacey: What you did - that was amazing.
Steven: It was gut instinct.
Stacey: Ian should forgive you after this.
Steven: Do you think so?
Stacey: Yes.
Steven: After all that has happened?
Staey: I'm sure of it.
Steven: Thanks,. it will come right for you too Stace. Thanks for standing by me. I don't have many friends.
Stacey: Neither o I at the moment. Bradley won't even look at me.
Steven: He will come round.

The door rings. Stacey answers and shows Ian in.

Stacey: I'd better get back to the stall.

Stacey leaves. Ian and Steven look at each other.

Ian: You saved Jane's life.

Steven nods mutely.

Ian sits down.

Ian: I don't know what to say.

Steven looks at him.

Ian: You're better now...right?

Steven: Yes.

Pause

Steven: Look, I should have given you and Jane more space after - well what happened and everything. I was just so desperate to make amends.

Ian: I'm sorry I threw you out and was hostile to you all these weeks. I wasn't sure of you and I was trying to protect Jane.

Steven: I understand.

Ian looks at Steven's arms.

Ian: I'm really touched Steven - that you did that.

Steven: Thanks.

Pause

Steven: I was ill before. I didn't know what I was doing. Lucy made me see how screwed my behaviour was and then I wasn't really in a condition to say sorry.

Ian: I know. I was so angry at you. You see Jane...

Steven: I know, Pat told me and I must live with that.

Ian: Oh come here (he suddenly hugs Steven)

Steven: Dad...

I like it

I also can see how Jane can forgive Steven if something like this happens, if Jane is in danger and Steven comes to the rescue :D

Thanks so much Lennie. You;'ve made my day. In the actual script though I doubt they'd do it like this and its too soon after Pauline was involved in a house fire but it's nice to imagine isn't it?
