The writers of EastEnders have created a new gay character to join the soap in the New Year, it has been revealed.

Jane Beale's gay brother will turn up in Albert Square and stir up some trouble with the Walford residents.

A source said: "The bosses at EastEnders have seen how well Antony Cotton does as Sean in Corrie. He's become incredibly popular with viewers so they've decided it's time to have a gay character of their own.

"However, he's not going to be as camp as Sean. This guy's going to be very suave and a real charmer."

Previously the soap has had regular gay characters in the form of Colin and Barry, as well as Tony and Simon and Doctor Fonseca.

good news, it's about time they got themselves a gay character, one of things the show was lacking

and i'm glad it's not just a "token gay", he actually will have family in the Square.

and thank god he isn't going to be camp like Anthony Cotton, that would just ruin what is currently a damn good show!

I agree they havent had a gay character in a long time. I also llike the fact that the character is going to already have alink to the show, ie being Janes brother. Also Thank God he isnt going to be very camp.

I'm glad they aren't going down the camp route with this character - will be interesting to see what actor is lined up for this role and how well he is portrayed on screen.

Sounds like they're just trying to tick every demographic box

That is what I think too. I don't remember Jane ever talking about a gay brother, unless I missed it. :searchme:
