Classic sitcom To the Manor Born is to return for a one-off Christmas special.

The BBC show, which starred Peter Bowles and Penelope Keith, ran for three series between 1979 and 1981. Bowles played wealthy businessman Richard DeVere, who buys a manor house previously owned by the family of Audrey fforbes-Hamilton, played by Keith, leaving her to live in a cottage on the grounds.

The pair were last seen in 1981, when they finally tied the knot following a tempestuous relationship.

The show was initially rumoured to be making a comeback last month.

The hour-long special will see life at the estate thrown into chaos as the couple prepare for their silver wedding anniversary. Aided by schoolfriend Marjory (Angela Thorne), Audrey fights to defend a community, protect 400 years of history and keep her marriage afloat.

Keith said: "Thankfully the weather has been kind to us while we've been filming down in Somerset. It's enormous fun to be back filming for the Christmas special and a great joy to be returning to BBC One."

I loved this series, but I don't know how I will feel about a 25 anniversary episode. Richard and Audrey were great because of the aggro and undercurrent of attraction. The series finished with the wedding because that was the end of what made it good.
