what do you think is the best brand of nappys?
i use huggies at the beginning when they are baby baby's(if that makes sense) then i swap on to pampers as they are bigger and i have quite lardy boys, lol. so i have chosen both.i have tried other brands but find they leak or split etc.

i thought huggies were the best when connor was a baby but now he is toilet trained and wears pampers easy up at night. i would use huggies again though if i have another. boots own nappies are really good as well

I used pamper on my daughter up until she was about 2 and then I move to huggies pull up's... Pamper is very expensive compared to other brand but they are better, in my opinion

I used terrytoweling nappies! Disposable nappies take 500 years to decompose and for each child you fill on average 100 cubic metres on this earth with their stinking nappies!

Terry towelling ones are far more environmentally friendly and are better for your child! They reduce nappy rash - my baby never got it - and they are much cheaper!

My nappies cost £40 in total - most people spend between £2,500 and £3,000 on nappies for their child!

It cost the council 10p to dispose of each disposable nappy and it's just laziness that encourages use!

The only time disposable nappies should be used are when you don't have access to a washing machine - eg, when you are on holiday!

I tried to use terrytowelling on my baby, Bren, and it just didn't work. She wriggled and got pins stuck in her. My husband Dom wasn't any better at it.
I do prefer terry towelling but I can only use that when mum comes round. It is much much cheaper.

I just buy normal towels in the sales and cut them down to size -- I also use "safety pins" they tend not to stick into your baby -- I tried normal pins but as you said Emma Lee they tend to go right through the towels when the baby wiggles... maybe they should put bigger heads on them? Being on a budget I just put normal kitchen roll inside the nappy as the nappy liners are really expensive.... I also find that putting the towels in a bucket of hot bleach get's them cleaner than putting them through the washing machine.

You can by nippergrippers to pin your nappy, which is a platic threeway gripper - they only sit on the outside of the nappy and are really useful in the beginning!

Councils will be introducing higher rats of council tax to those who use disposables in the next few years! It's because most of their waste budget goes on making room for disposable nappies and the space they take up means most councils won't hit their environment waste targets!

They will check the birth registers monthly and do spot checks on the contents of your bin! They will also be questioning households as to their lifestyles. There are several ways to find out the information!

I hate to contradict people who are obviously environmentally aware but the Environment Agency produced a report last week stating that over the lifetime of the nappy there is very little differece in the environmental impact between disposable and reusable. They took into account the machine washing and the detergents used etc to clean towling nappies. If you hand wash it wouldn't be as bad.

I have to say that I was shocked.

By the way, I used pampers

i dont think this would work as people can easily lie in surveys and would if they knew that if they said they used disposable nappies then their tax would go up. also it would just mean that people would put their rubbish bags outside someone elses house instead and so you could be paying more tax when they arent even your nappies

Dumping your rubbish outside other peoples houses is fly tipping and civil action can be brought against you! The decision to charge will be brought in a 2 years time! Councils have a range of ways to check on people.

As for the Terry v disposable research - it was funded by pampers!!!!!!!! The research council have admitted it and say it only refers to terry nappies that are sent to a washing service to be washed! Terry nappies washed in the home are far more environmentally friendly!

dont stop people doing it, loads of people dump their rubbish outside other peoles houses where i live. im not sayign its right, as i dont think they should be doing it, im just saying that if this higher council tax thing is going to happen, then a lot more people are going to do this sort of thing. and how are the council going to know whos doing it?

Where we live we have people whoinvestigate things like that! They go through rubbish that is dumped and look for information to match them to the guilty person! Envelopes etc. that sort of thing. They also sit in unmarked cars and watch for it to happen! You can be fined £2000 for dumping rubbish so it's worth their while to do it!

As for nappies, technically the council is already doing you a favour as used nappies are clinical waste and they don't have to take them away!

Dumped and properly disposed of disposable nappies (taken away by the council) account for the deaths of over 2 million wild mammals in this country every year!

well no one does that where i live. so youre telling me on rubbish day, when everyone has their bags out for the dustman to collect, these people are going to go through every bag to make sure that no one has put their bin bag outside someone elses house? i dont think so somehow

And I'm sure you are not going to store up all your nappies for 2 weeks to dump them outside someone elses house! It would be obviously nappies, and then they would investigate! Duh!

i wouldnt call you lazy!! i find it hectic enough being a mum to 1 child!! you have two, i just wouldnt have the time to stand and hand wash terry nappies and to be honest i couldnt be bothered!! it is so much easier to go to the shops and pick up a pack of nappies and then throw in the bin when finished! when i was pregnent my mum went on an don about how much better and cheaper it would be for me to use terries and that she would never use disposables if she had to go through it all again! my has she changed her mind now!! even she admitted they were better and my mum NEVER changes her mind!!

our dustmen come every week and we put our rubbish in our dustbin until the night before they come. im not sure how it works where you live but our dustbin, as is the case for the majority of people who live in my area, is at the back of the house, so you could out your dirty nappies in the bin once you finished with them as you would if you were going to put the rubbish bag outside your own house but instead of putting the bag outside your house on that day you could put it outside someone elses house down your road, and it wouldnt be any different. these people wouldnt be able to rummage through our dustbins as they cant get into our back gardens and if there is other rubbish in the sack too then they wouldnt know. as i said before, i dont think they are going to look through every rubbish bag thats left out for the dustman

shouldnt the envelopes be recycled so they wouldnt be in the rubbish anyway. if they are going to start putting up council tax for people who use disposable nappies then they should put it up for people who dont bother recycling anything. how much harder is it to put all your paper in a separate bag instead of just throwing it in the bin? that would be saving our environment too

Omnicube
27-05-2005, 09:49
There are detailed plans of how charging for rubbish disposal is going to be brought in! You're right - higher charges will also be levied at houses who don't recycle as they should! Aluminim, plastic, and paper should all be recycled! only about 5% of our rubbish can't actually be recycled so its very important that everyone does their bit!

Having said that, it will be almost impossible for people to get away without being charged for disposal of things like nappies when the new system comes in! As for rummaging through your rubbish, they will do it if they think they can get a premium out of you!

Hi everyone - excellent discussion going on. I have used both. I used disposables on my eldest, and then combined Cottom Bottoms during the day and disposables at night on my youngest (now 3) as I found he was getting damp during the night. I found both as easy as the other, especially with the wraps etc - no pins to worry about. The only downside I found is that when you are doing 2 washes a day anyway, with the extra one every couple of days for the nappies aswell, you find you spend even more amounts of time doing housework!!! Currently expecting my third, and will combine both again like before.

Yuk. That would be my worst nightmare.

I'm one of those women who hasn't got a maternal bone in her body. The thought of carrying a child around inside me for 9 months, have it kicking the hell out of me, and then have said child enter the world in the most painful way imaginable does not appeal to me one little bit.

I have no patience when it comes to kids, and I'm too selfish. I like my life the way it is. My mum is really fed up, as I'm an only child and she's never going to be a grandmother. I keep telling her to borrow a couple from her sister - she's got 9 grandchildren. Must cost a small fortune at Christmas.

Having said all that, what the hell am I doing on a thread about nappies? :rotfl:

I think, I just wish both weren't so quick cause it made it very frightening, especially with my second, as I thought I was hemorraging and the midwives couldn't find a heartbeat because he was coming out so fast, so maybe 2 hrs. Knowing my luck, this time I will probably have an extremely long and difficult time of it.
