Oliver Milburn (The Forsythe Saga, Born and Bred) has joined the cast of BBC One cop drama Holby Blue for its second series.

The 34-year-old will play DCI Scott Vaughan, a charismatic officer who has climbed the career ladder surprisingly quickly thanks to his silver tongue and passion for the job.

Vaughan soon makes his presence felt at Holby South Station, not least with DI John Keenan (Cal MacAninch) and DS Luke French (Richard Harrington), who are struggling with the day-to-day running of the station following the departure of disgraced DCI Harry Hutchinson.

Scott is not the only new arrival, as Luke is anxiously awaiting the birth of his first child, and Inspector Jenny Black (Kacey Ainsworth) is pregnant. Meanwhile, John and wife Kate (Zoe Lucker) are back together, trying to keep their marriage afloat despite John's workaholic tendencies.

However, John and Luke have a pressing case concerning a murder at Holby City General Hospital and despite conflicting witness statements and very little evidence, they must struggle to uncover the truth.

Executive producer Karen Wilson said: “Scott certainly creates a stir and is sure to perpetuate some intriguing goings-on at the station! However, he has big shoes to fill as the new DCI and all the eyes of the officers will be on him to lead them through the fallout from Harry Hutchinson’s departure.”

Creator Tony Jordan said: “We have been busy throughout the summer coming up with bigger and better storylines for this new, extended series. There are a few familiar faces from Holby City appearing in the first episode in a dramatic and intriguing storyline that spans both shows.”

Series two of Holby Blue is filming in Surrey until March 2008 and returns to BBC One next spring for an extended run of twelve episodes.
