Paranoid schizophrenic Michael Simms (Simon Muller) is persuaded by DI Neil Manson (Andrew Lancel) to put down the knife he is holding to Shelley Cooper’s (Alison Pargeter) throat. As Michael explains that he only wanted to talk to Shelley, her son Jaz (Scott Hazell) rides in on a scooter and amid the confusion, a gun shot rings out and Shelley falls to the floor. A stunned Neil radios for help and chases after Michael who is running away from the scene. They end up at the hospital and Neil sees Michael pushing his physiatrist, Dr Julia Bickham (Emily Hamilton) into her office. Convinced Michael has a gun and that Julia’s life is in danger, he gives CO19 the order to take him down and Michael is fatally shot. Neil is devastated when a furious Julia tells him Michael didn’t have a gun.

The next day Neil and his colleagues are interviewed by the Department of Professional Standards to ensure the correct procedures were followed. Neil becomes irate and insists he acted without prejudice, while Superintendent Heaton (Daniel Flynn) confesses he has doubted Neil’s ability in the past. Later, Shelley’s ex partner Chris Ramsden (Paul McNeilly), is brought in for questioning and he finally admits that he was the suspect who attacked Shelley and another woman on the estate. He also confesses to planting the ski mask and knife in Michael’s house. After further investigation, the team learn that it was Jaz who possessed the gun and accidentally shot Shelley. As the case unravels, Neil realises that he is responsible for the death of an innocent man and that his career could be over…

25 October
Sergeant Stone (Sam Callis) and PC Diane Noble (Kaye Wragg) respond to a call from one of Diane’s neighbours. They discover Steve Myatt (Orlando Wells) unconscious and see he has been hit with an iron. Neighbour Alun Thomas (Danny Midwinter), who called the police, informs the officers that Steve’s wife Angela (Emily Beecham) is missing. Later in hospital, Steve admits that he and Angela had been arguing and she lashed out with the iron, but he doesn’t want to press charges.

Elsewhere, PCs Sally Armstrong (Ali Bastian) and Emma Keane (Melanie Gutteridge) are out on patrol when they find a frightened Angela with a burn mark on her arm. Although Angela claims the burn was an accident, Stone and Diane are convinced that Steve has been abusing her. However, after further investigation, the officers discover that Angela is self harming as a result of being blackmailed by neighbour Alun. The officers decide to use Diane’s flat in order to watch Alun and get the evidence they need. Stone, realising how emotionally involved Diane is with the case, promises that he will do whatever he can to get Alun charged…

Elsewhere, Sergeant Smithy (Alex Walkinshaw) and PC Nate Roberts (Ben Richards) are called to a disturbance where they find youth leader, Macca (Abdul Salis) and Mr Chadar (Albert Moses) arguing over a batch of raffle tickets. When Mr Chadar sees Carly Samuels (Marsha Leanne Crosby) with a group of teenagers, he picks her out as the girl who sold him the dud tickets. Smithy and Nate pay her a visit at home and Smithy is surprised when Carly’s mum, Leanne (Lorna Brown) lets them in and explains she is looking after Carly’s baby. As soon as she walks into the house she is taken to the station for questioning. Smithy, believing that Carly has potential and can take responsibility for her baby, tries to talk some sense into her. Can he get her to stay on the right side of the law?
