I had a smear test back in april, and got told i had to get a coloscopy at the hospital something to do with abnormalities being found, i have had 2 appointments at the hospital but havent turned up, does anyone know exactly what this coloscopy actually entails?

Hi Rooney,

It sounds like you should not ignore those appointment letters, even if it is just to put any worries to rest.

Please go to http://www.colposcopy.org.uk for more information.

I hope things turn out well for you.

I too have had a letter sying that I have to get a colposcopy done but not yet received my date for going!

You shouldn't worry too much as I know a few people that have had to get this done and a lot of the time it can just turn out to be an infection that can be treated quite easily.

I too panicked when I got my letter but since speaking to a few people they have put my mind more at rest.

i havent even told my mum about it, i know im 25 i just wish i could talk to my mum about this kind of thing but she doesnt like to talk about serious things, and shes hardly a great role model when it comes to health she hasnt had a smear since my brother was born 21 years ago, her motto is if theres anything wrong she would rather not know

If you can't talk to your mum, speak to your GP or practice nurse - don't hide away from it. I've been lucky enough to not require a coloscopy or anything, but did have a borderline result a few years back which all turned out fine. My godmothers daughter had to have cells removed as they were suspicious, but that all turned out fine aswell. Its far far better for you to get it sorted now rather than leave it.

Do not ignore the letters hun, go and speak to someone about what will happen and go from there.

thanks for everyones advice, I went for my colposcopy yesterday although i did consider not going, but its over and done with now although i did have to have biopsy taken and a cold coagulation (uses a heat probe to destroy the abnormal cells)
