BBC One is to screen a new three-part series this autumn after one-off drama Casualty 1906 proved a hit last year.

Cherie Lunghi and Sarah Smart will star in Casualty 1907, which features life at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel a century ago.

The show - set 20 years before the discovery of penicillin - is based on ward reports, autopsy records and diaries, and features real-life doctors, nurses and patients.

Joining the cast will be Lilly Allen's little brother Alfie, who will take on the role of an injured East End gang member.

Charity Wakefield - who played Miss Temple in Jane Eyre - will star as a probation nurse in the programme, which also features William Houston, Tom Riley and David Troughton.

An insider told the Mirror: "It was only our grandparents' time, yet it's a shocking, foreign world."

That sounds really good. Didn't realise there was a Casualty 1906 mind.
But it will be interesting to watch if they do it realistically. See how they coped without all the equipment we have today.

Found this in the BBC Press office:

Cherie Lunghi (EastEnders) and Sarah Smart (Five Days) lead the cast in Casualty 1907, a new three-part series on BBC One this autumn.

Following the popular Casualty 1906 (December 2006, BBC One) this new series again plunges viewers into the various medical crises in London's East End 100 years ago.

Each one-hour episode of Casualty 1907 uses case notes, ward reports, autopsy records and diaries to bring actual doctors, nurses and patients at The Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, vividly back to life.

The series captures a world in which life expectancy is just 45, and where one in seven children die by the age of five. Streets are teeming with trouble. Gangland rivalry is rife and fears about terrorism and security are on the increase. Yet, despite the extreme hardship, resilience in the community is remarkable and their fighting spirit shines through.

Casualty 1907 is a Stone City Film production for BBC One and also stars Charity Wakefield (Sense And Sensibility, Rapunzel), William Houston (North And South), Tom Riley (Miss Marple), David Troughton (Midsomer Murders) and up coming star Alfie Allen.

The series was commissioned by Martin Davidson (Acting Commissioner, Specialist Factual) and Jane Tranter (Controller, BBC Fiction).

Bryn Higgins is the Series Producer (Stone City Film).
