This is my first ever fic, as the title says. So it's not that good. But here you go..
Sam and Connie
Connie walked in to the hospital in her usual way. Chin up, straight back, with no care in the world. Only deep inside, it wasn’t that way at all. It was all for show. She stepped into Darwin and spotted Sam flirting openly with Chrissie Williams.
“Mr Strachan! Perhaps less heart chasing, and more heart saving?”
Sam looked at Chrissie, who sniggered at Connie’s outburst.
“Certainly Connie.” Sam said with a cheeky smile on his face.
“It’s Mrs Beauchamp to you.”
Feeling slightly satisfied, Connie walked her way through the corridor and into her office. Elliot was sitting doing his usual. Eating a sandwich.
“Is that all you do Elliot?” She said sternly.
“Not a good day Connie?” He replied, sensing the tension in her voice.
“Hmm.”
** Few hours later **
It was late at night, and Sam was sleeping in the on-call room.
* Beep, Beep*
It was his pager.
“Emergency, Connie.” he read, with confusion. He had had thousands of pages before, but this one seemed different. Never had been signed from Connie personally. He shot out of the on-call bed, and rushed towards Darwin.
“Where’s Connie?” he said to Maria with a scared tone in his voice.
“Erm, uh, er..” she stumbled.
He grabbed her arms, with a slight aggression,
“WHERE IS SHE?”
“Sam calm down, she’s in her office, what’s wrong?” interrupted Chrissie, saving a scared Maria.
Sam looked at Chrissie, still with an angry expression laying upon his face. He let go of Marias arms, and stroked them in a sorry way. Rushing to Connies office, he flung the door open.
“What’s the emergency Connie?” saying sarcastically.
“Elliot, could you leave us alone please?” Connie inquired.
“Of course I can.” He said, grabbing his sandwich.
“Well?” Sam said, trying to be calm.
“I don’t know how to say this….. It’s… It’s Grace.”
He looked down, for a slight second. Lifted his head, his eyes filled with water, but not enough to be noticed by Connie.
“What about her?” Sam seemed scared.
Connie mirrored his actions. Not intentionally though. She didn’t want to seem hurt in front of someone else.
“Erm,” she struggled. “Erm, last night.. She had trouble breathing.. I didn’t think anything of it at the time.” she stopped for a second.
“I thought she was crying, you know what it’s like when they’re that age. It’s hard for them to get it out. When I woke up at 3, she wasn’t crying. She usually wakes for a feed that time. So I went to check on her. She wasn’t breathing at all.”
Tears rolled down Sam’s face.
“She’s in SCBU. She’s stable at the moment. But anything could happen.”
It took a while for Sam to register what Connie was saying to him. He had always been known for having a short temper, and this was no exception.
“What do you mean ’you thought nothing of it. Not only are you her mother, but your a doctor aswell!!” He said, with that reputable temper.
“Sam please. Your daughter is sick. Don’t take it out on me. I was over worked, talk to the board about that. They’re the real ones to blame.” she said, sounding tired and fed up.
It was silent. But not for long. Sam breathed deeply, then said..
“The thing I want to know is.. Why are you sitting here doing work, when your daughter is un SCBU fighting for her life?”
“Sam..” she didn’t get the chance to continue.”
“Forget it!” Sam said, storming out of her office. Chrissie, Maria and Elliot all watching as he did.
Sam stood in the corridor, looking through the window of his beautiful daughter.
“You may come in now Mr Strachan.” said the nurse who was watching over his angel.
He stared at the nurse, a tear gathering in the corner of his eye.
“It’s okay.” she said, realising how scared he was. “I’ll leave you to it.”
Grace was awake. Groaning unknowing what had happened to her. She looked so small. Much more beautiful than the other babies her age - at least that’s what Sam thought.
He touched her hand. Tearing in his eyes, he spoke comforting words to her - it didn’t matter that she didn’t understand, in her heart he knew she would.
“Hey baby girl.” he started.
“Daddy’s here. I always will be. I know that you will get better, you are a little fighter, just like your mummy. Although she’s not here with me now, she does love you ever so deeply. Don’t you ever forget that. When you’re better, we’ll take you to see all the lovely animals at the zoo. You’ll like that. Daddy did when he was young.”
He cries. Tears rolling down his face.
“Please don’t leave me. Not yet.” he paused.
“I love you.”
Sam turned around, feeling a presence watching him. Connie was outside, watching and listening to all he said. Tears filled her eyes. She walked away, trying to escape what she was feeling. Sam looked back at Grace. He kissed her hand gently, but letting her know he was there. He got up, walked towards the door, in the hope of finding Connie.
More tomorrow or friday.
