CORRIE star Steven Arnold left bosses fuming by going AWOL from filming the day after a boozy party.

Steven, 32, who plays butcher Ashley Peacock, failed to turn up for work on Friday and a whole day's shooting had to be rescheduled.

Livid producers could not contact him to demand an explanation as his mobile was switched OFF.

There are now concerns on the ITV1 soap that he may wind up being sacked like Les Battersby actor Bruce Jones.

Bruce, 54, lost his £120,000-ayear Corrie job for slagging off colleagues during a 19-pint booze bender at a Cheshire pub earlier this year. A show insider said: "Steven was due to be filming crucial scenes on Friday and caused a real headache by not turning up.

"They were trying to call him all day but his mobile was off. That is totally unprofessional.

And it's not the first time they haven't been able to get hold of him. The scenes will now have to be filmed another day."

There was still no sign of Steven yesterday at his home in Warrington, Cheshire, and bosses fear he is spiralling out of control. A Street source admitted: "This is worrying.

He has become increasingly hard to get hold of lately. Words have already been exchanged with Steve about his sometimes unprofessional attitude to work.

"He is a brilliant actor and highly valued. We'd hate to think that things were going on in his private life that were affecting his work."

Last month Steven caused chaos at a posh dinner by squaring up to boxing legends Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn.

He drunkenly heckled the pair, hurling incoherent insults as they made after-dinner speeches from a boxing ring.

Then, in a display far removed from his mild-mannered TV character, he climbed into the ring and stood unsteadily in front of the boxers. Onlookers said he was "paralytic".

Security men bundled him out as guests at the £150-a-head Manchester bash booed.

An angry organiser of the event said: "He overstepped the mark. He probably thought it was hilarious but it was really obnoxious behaviour."

Steven has been playing Ashley, one of the main characters in the show, for 11 years. A recent storyline saw him and wife Claire's home destroyed in an arson attack.

A Coronation Street spokeswoman said of Steven's disappearance on Friday: "He did have a family party the night before and was probably in bed.

"We couldn't get hold of him but he always has trouble with his phone. He's a bit of a nightmare with them.

"We rescheduled filming and the day was re-arranged."
