Catherine Tate has been confirmed as David Tennant's new companion in the next series of Doctor Who.

The comedian will reprise her role as Donna, who featured in the most recent Christmas special, 'The Runaway Bride', for the full thirteen-episode run of series four. As previously reported, Freema Agyeman will return to the show mid-way through the series, which begins filming this month for broadcast from next Easter.

"Catherine was an absolute star in The Runaway Bride and we are delighted that one of Britain's greatest talents has agreed to join us for the fourth series," said exec producer Russell T Davies. "Viewers can expect more ambitious storylines and a whole host of guest stars in 2008."

Tate added: "I am delighted to be returning to Doctor Who. I had a blast last Christmas and look forward to travelling again through time and space with that nice man from Gallifrey."

The news follows confirmation that Kylie Minogue will guest star in this year's Christmas special, 'Voyage of the Damned'.

:( I am horrified by this and believe it to be a huge mistake.

The girl from the Blink episode would have been much better.

I really hope that I am proved wrong

Agreed, she was good for a one off but for a whole series no way, theyd have been better off going for an unknown.

i think this is brilliant

Donna was great and to have her there for half of the next series - just think of all the laughs we're going to get with davids quirky sence of humour and catherine tate.

I'm really sad that Freema Agyeman will no longer be in Doctor Who, I think she's beautiful and they made a perfect team. Anyone know why she is being replaced ??? :wall:

She is down for 3 episodes apparently - I can't wait!

I'm not happy at all about Donna, though.

I didn't mind Donna... But i didn't like her much either. Though to be fair, i didn't like David Tennant much in "The Christmas Invasion" either. And i didn't like the sound of Freema either. But gave them both a chance, and they turned out to be really good. Catherine might be the same.

And anyway, the first 6 episodes of each series are **** anyway, whether Catherine Tate is in them or not. Its the second half which are the ones to watch, and Freema is back for them :p

I actually can't stand Catherine Tate. I will probably watch the first two with her in, to see what she's like, then probably stop watching, as silly as that may sound. I also disagree that the first 6 episodes of the series are crap, or whatever word you used Abi lol.

Also, another thing. Rose and Martha have been far too nice. And the love thing has been overdone already. At least we can pretty much rule both of those out with dear old Donna :p

Was I the only person who liked Catherine Tate in the Christmas Invasion? :o I thought she was great. I can't wait to see her in Series 4.

I liked her in The Runaway Bride, can't wait to see what shes like as a full-time companion. Will be interesting to see her and Martha together later in the series. :D

sorry but i think this is a bad idea - both rose and martha were very intelligent, donna is er, dumb and ever so annoying

I really wish that they had asked the actress who played Sally Sparrow. She was smart, sassy and interesting.

Donna will be a switch off for me I am afraid, although I will give it a chance.

have you seen the BBC 'Have your say' on this topic. Hardly anyone seems to be in favour of Catherine Tate and Donna.

I think RTD needs to go. He is starting to make some very bad decisions.

I agree that he seems not to be at his best at the mo.

The quasi religious 'undertones' in the the last episode were so predictable and quite crass.

With Catherine Tate in it that will be a sign of success...

Am I bovvered?

Actually, I love watching her on youtube. Just not the right fit for Doctor Who. As Trinity says, Sally Sparrow would have been a better choice.

Steven Moffet should take over from RTD. He's the far better writter, and makes more interesting stories and characters.

I don't mind Catherine Tate as a comedian but I think she is a bad choice for a Dr Who assistant I will be waiting for her to say "Am I bovvered" to a Dalek. I'm sure there could have been a number of actresses who would have been more suitable. What about a male assistant.

I thought Catherine Tate had good novelty value in the runaway bride, but i'm not sure what she'll be like for a full 13-episode run. I thought it would be a nice opportunity to have a different species companion, to shake things up a bit. Peter Davison had Nissa and Adrik and they were brilliant. It could also have been an opportunity for there to be a male companion who isn't in love with the Dr.

Having said that, i will watch series 4 religiously, no matter what. David Tennant can more than carry any companion.

Lil xx

p.s. Sally Sparrow would have been an excellent choice. The fools for missing out on that one

Catherine Tate has suggested that the next series of Doctor Who could be the last for actor David Tennant.

The comedian, speaking on Radio 2's Jonathan Ross programme, said: "I think it's maybe David's last series."
The BBC refused to comment on Mr Tennant's future as the show's star.
Tate, who first appeared in the 2006 Christmas special, is to return as the doctor's assistant, Donna, for the entire run of the fourth series.
She will also be joined for several episodes by the doctor's former companion Martha Jones, played by Freema Agyeman.
When pressed on whether Tennant would return to play the timelord in special Dr Who shows in future, Tate replied: "Possibly."
The comedian also confirmed that the forthcoming series would be her last.
Tate made her Doctor Who debut last year as a runaway bride who found herself transported into the Tardis as she prepared for her wedding on Christmas Eve.
The episode attracted an audience of 9.4 million when it was screened on BBC One on Christmas Day.
This year's Christmas special, starring Kylie Minogue, is due to be screened at 1850 GMT on 25 December.
Speaking to Doctor Who magazine, the pop star said appearing in the show was "like stepping back in time". "I really felt at home being back in the world of TV," she added. "I've definitely got the acting bug again!"

Noooooo he cant be :(

They already said that he would be in the 3 specials in 2009, so it can't be? Though, unless they mean that this is his last full series, and not counting the specials. If CT is leaving, it would be odd to get rid of both of them, in 1 episode (Even if Martha, Donna, Jack and Sarah-Jane are all in it still!)
