Very sad news. I hope he makes a recovery, but I doubt we'll see John in a regular capacity in EE anymore.

Here is the press release from DS:

EastEnders actor John Bardon is recovering in hospital having suffered a stroke.

The 67-year-old cast member – who has played Jim Branning in the BBC soap for 11 years – was at home on Thursday when he collapsed and was quickly taken to a Hertfordshire hospital with wife of five years, Enda.

Producers have already begun tweaking scripts and making alterations to filming schedules, in the knowledge that Bardon will be out of action for some time.

A BBC spokeswoman commented: "John was taken ill at home on Thursday afternoon.

"Our thoughts are with him and his family and we ask for his privacy to be respected."

Executive producer Dierdrick Santer said: "I am saddened to hear John has taken ill. My thoughts are with him and his family."

The actor's condition is currently unknown but is believed to be stable.

Let's hope that John makes a speedy recovery and is back beside his beloved Dorothy soon

Was really sad to hear this news. Jim is a great character and John BArdon is a great actor - very charasmatic.

Thoughts and best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to him, and his wife, family and friends.

Get well soon:D

I found this on DS but as they did not quote a source, not sure how reliable it is. Poor John, I would love to see him back, just hope he does not over do things.

Due to the fact john bardon has lost the use of one of his legs and is now in a wheelchair...eastenders are writing a stroke into the storyline...next week dot gets a phone call to say jim has had a stroke...this is so when john returns to eastenders it explains why he cannot walk well and his appearence being different....

So he will return then. If he feels up to it he should do it.

I am so glad that they are writing him a storyline so he can come back in it, and that they havent got rid of him, as I think he is a really good actor.
I cant wait to see him back in the show

:( most of you young kids have no idea how strokes affect some one, John's speech also may be affected, his face may be pulled down..he may not even resemble or sound like the JIM we all know and love .. so if he does appear on the show say a few months down the road keep all this info in mind..:(I love his character too,, and I miss having him and Dot sniping at each other and watching him down and the bookies with Patrick. Miss him rolling his eyes at something nutty that Dot said or whatever..:)

Bless him I hope he makes a good recovery and its not too long before he is back to his old rascal self. Though I don't think writing a story about Jim suffering a stroke is a good idea. Let the man recover at his own pace it's all well writing the storyline to give him an exit while he recovers but no-one knows how long it will take for him to recover or if he will.

Strokes are tricky things,, my professor and mentor had one,, and he was ok after wards but in 3 mos after the inital stroke he started changing .. so strokes affect people differently all the time.
John was in his late 60's ??? Some times age plays a big part in his recovery and a diet..i just hope EE does not exploit his illness.

When someone has anything to do with the brain they can change emotionally and behaviourally. If the actor wants to return and EE do it sympathetically it would be good for the show and for other people who suffer or have suffered from a stroke.

I hope they do do it sympathetically. Santer and co must have consulted with John and his family and decided to do this so I would imagine John is fine about it.

EastEnders star John Bardon was rushed to hospital last night following a new health scare.

The actor, who plays Jim Branning on the BBC One soap, was admitted to the Lister Hospital in Chelsea, West London, amid fears that he had suffered another stroke. It was later stated that he was in a "comfortable" condition.

Bardon has spent a year in recovery after having a stroke in July 2007. He recently filmed a one-off EastEnders episode, which airs on Monday, and had been looking forward to making a permanent return.

Speaking about the actor's condition in May, Bardon's wife Enda revealed: "John's speech comes out as gobbledygook. But he can swear! I hope being with his colleagues will get more out of him."

A month later, Bardon made his first public appearance in a year at the Life After Stroke Awards. A spokeswoman for The Stroke Association confirmed that he had made an "amazing recovery".

Aww poor John, he'd be really disappointed if it meant he couldn't go back.

I think they need to just forget about him coming back to EE for now and concentrate on his health more than anything.

Kim
09-08-2008, 20:43
I guess it could worry John with everything going round about potential returns, incase he can't return for a good while and they decide that they don't want the character of Jim to come back, or something. It's something John really wants to do which doesn't help.

Chloe O'brien

I think it would be best for John if he didn't return to EE at all. I know he may have money worries but you're health has to come first. I wish John all the best in his recovery and hope it is not too serious but someone has to make the decision to let Jim's character be a virtual character on the show were Dot speaks a lot about him without anyone seeing him or they write him out of the show. Either way it's not going to help John by having him return to those long working hours.
