It seems that Carrie left when she was pregnant, and she told Tom he was the Father. Obviously Carl would have been too young to provide for her and her baby. Tom had a reason to keep the baby a secret, if Carl is her father, Carrie would have a reason also and that might be why she disappeared out of their lives so quietly.


If wikipedia is correct Carl was 15 when scarlet was born ( Carl been born in 1976, scarlet being born in 1991) which sounds conceivable if he lost his virginity to her young
