Different names

I did a search for this but couldn't find anything so thought i would start this because i was watching a show on TV lastnight where the family went into witness protection and had to change their names, so if you was a witness and had to go into hiding what name would you have?

I think I would change my name to either Rachael Greencastle or Jodie Wallace

Wouldn't the police already have decided on what you're new identity would be. I didn't think witnesses would be able to choose their new names.
