I thought DW needed a new topic for this series.

What did you think of the first episode? I thought it was great - really well written. I really loved how it wasn't like, he's the Doctor and you can go travelling with him Martha.

Freema is excellent, I can't wait to see more of her.

Also liked the whole thing about Adeola being her cousin. They didn't have to put that in but I'm glad they did :)

Bring on episode two :D

Kim

Who is Adeola? Is it someone familiar, or did you just like the fact that Martha's family were mentioned, as Rose's were in the last series?

I loved it that everyone bar Rose doesn't seem to like calling him The Doctor. At christmas, Donna called him a martian, and Martha keeps calling him Mr Smith.

Loved the plot. Wasn't that sure I would like it at first, but the part with the doctor convincing her the scanning had moved to stage two, then resulting in her being detected as a non-human.

It was also surprising how much she spoke and was like Rose in that she wasn't scared, and everyone else was refusing to go outside incase they died.

I thought it was really well acted in the part where they were running low on oxygen, especially, and I liked The Doctor with Martha at the end.

I'll have to record it next week, can't wait to see it :)

Adeola was who Freema played in series 2. She worked for Yvonne in Torchwood.

I forgot about the scene where they were almost out of oxygen. That was superbly acted. It was just so credible (apart from the Doctor with his two hearts).

I hope they do more stuff like that in this series.

I also liked it how the Doctor was acting all 'human' with the alien blood-sucker lady :D

Kim
31-03-2007, 21:12
Yeah, that scene was great. I was surprised she didn't call for those things before she sucked his blood. Loved it when he was going, "Oh, I took a Physics GCSE..." Then the woman said something, and he replied, "I passed Geography GCSE as well," then started saying something about the Earth.

I thought it was a great plot tonight and a great way to bring Martha in! I'll be looking forward to next week :D

I didn't think that i would like Martha much, but she was much better then what i thought she would be. She actually has a normal London accent (Unlike Rose, and the whole of the cast of Eastenders!), and shes got some brains. I liked the fact that she had similarities to Rose, but was still completly different.

I didn't like the bit where the Judoon decided to take them back to Earth, but apart from that, it wasn't half bad! If you compared it to the first episode in series 1, where Rose was introduced, this was much better. There were some dodgy Martha moments, when she was wooden, but Billie Piper did that in her first episode, so i'll let her off for that.

And David Tennant was very good :D

Best bit..
"Its the TARDIS. Time And Relative Dimensions In Space"..."Its made of Wood!"

I thought it wasn't half bad. Martha was definately better than I thought she would be. The story was.. okay. But then that's what makes Dr Who good (for me), the farfetchedness :p. Doctor was awesome as always. And looking rather dashing ;-). I look forward to coming weeks, to see how good Freema actaully is :D. Next weeks looks good.

Ooo, and my dad watched it too, and seemed to enjoy it, and he didn't like the one he saw last season :p. So I'll take that as a good sign

Just one random comment from me - the Doctor had new converse. They were a beige-y colour last series and now he has red ones :D

CrazyLea

Yeah, the red ones were good.. then he threw them away :crying:.

I know, :( I really liked the red ones

Kim

I thought they looked a bit odd on him, but I couldn't put my finger on why. Oh, that reminds me, "You're right, one shoe does look odd!"

Amber
31-03-2007, 22:35
I liked that bit.

I would've liked to see the Doctor's glasses return. Hopefully they'll be back next week :)

Kim
31-03-2007, 22:57
I completely forgot them! I expect they will be, it's not as if you would take your glasses with you if you were in hospital, unless you were planning to read a book, or something.

I absolutely loved it. I'm a massive David Tennant fan as he really reminds me of Patrick Troughton (who was my ultimate favourite... until now). I thought it was a great story to introduce a new companion.

DT was looking as delicious as ever

I'm really looking forward to the next episode. The week can't go quickly enough in my opinion!

I loveeee his red ones, for one reason, I HAVE THEM!!!!! thy are actually a sort of reddy-burgundy colour really unusual and i only know of one other person with a pair, Gwen Cooper off torchwood!:D i hope he has them on next week

A brilliant first episode for Series 3. I really enjoyed it, a nice pacy plot and i love the new assistant! I thought i wouldn't be too keen on her, but i think she was great in her first episode!

The glasses better make a reappearance ... or there will be trouble :p

Fab episode, and i like Marta, didn't think i would, but i do :)
I like how they mentioned Rose, that was sweet.

I didn't like this first episode at all, it seemed to rushed, one minute it's normal and the next they are on the moon with these rhino aliens and an OAP vampire, it was like wooo bombardment.

I do like Freema though, time will tell if she's better than Rose, but I think she could well be. Her family seem a bit 2D, but I suppose that's to be expected, plus how annoying that they cast Reggie Yates as her brother, he's just too well known as a kids presenter - just like AHS last series - cheesy!

It was a weak episode to start, but like Abi said, Rose's first episode was the same, it's about introducing the new assitant, and establishing her relationship with the doctor. Next week's looks bad, but i never like the ones set in the past.

I'm looking forward to some of the episodes this series, let's hope it's as good as last series! :D

I read an interview about why they did that. "Rose" was all about introducing a new audience to Doctor Who, and how everything works, not just about building up a relationship. So they kept it calm, so the audience could understand it better. They didn't have to do that in "Smith and Jones", and just needed the audience to like Martha. So they stuck her in the deep end, so the audience wanted her to go with the Doctor.

RTD said in the Radio Times that he considered calling the episode "Baptism of Fire" :rotfl:

I absolutely loved tonight’s episode.

The end bit was classic ‘expelliarmus’ :) . The whole thing to me was very well written, especially the line throwing between the doctor and shakespeare.
David tenant and Dean Lennox Kelly

I’m liking the look for the 3rd episode… cant wait

He had the glasses on tonight girls, not for long thought. But they still made an apperance. :D. Another cracking episode with Shakespere asking if he could us some of the quotes.

That was funny, i really enjoyed that, so subtile with some of them too.

Didn't do nothing for me tonight I'm afraid, then again I never liked the ones set in the past. I never like how they change History like ooo they are meeting Shakespeare, Elizabeth 1, Queen Victoria etc, much prefer ones set in the present or the future, as thats far more sci fi.

Abbie
08-04-2007, 14:41

Ditto-ing everything sammibaby said :p
It was a very well written script, i must admit i do prefer when they travel forwards in time, not back but i still loved last night episode.
And as you said David Tenant and Dean Lennox Kelly

Abi

I dont normally like the past ones, but this was pretty good considering. I liked the fact they got loads of things from his plays interwound into it. You probably wouldn't even realise it if you didn't study Shakespeare. Like hinting that Martha is the "Dark Lady" that he talks about in the second half of his Sonnets. And that he wrote about those 3 witches in Macbeth. And that he named Callibans mother in the Tempest, Sycorax after the Doctor said the bones reminded him of one. It was pretty clever!

Martha didn't really have much of a role in it, which wasn't that good. I'd like to see more of her, as shes the new one. No complaints about David Tennant though

Best line in it: "Harry Potter. Just wait till you read the 7th one. I cried" :rotfl:

I really really enjoyed the episode with Shakespere,, I figured the 3 witches from Mac Beth,,
I loved the witty raporte between the Doctor and Shakespere,, I giggled,, I was prepared NOT to like Martha much, but hey shes pretty neat...
The Doc looked sooooooooo cute in his glasses,,

I enjoyed the show. Well written and v. well researched.

The whole premise of time travel means the future can be in the past. Going back in time is just as valid in Sci-fi terms as going forward, I would guess that it must be even more difficult to write as you have to fit in with our recorded history as well as come up with interesting sci-fi.

I guess they have to reuse sets etc as well - they never really seem to travel that far in terms of distance, the vast majority of episodes have been Earth based.

I wasn't too keen on Saturday's episode, i prefer the episodes set in the present and future too, though i thought it was really clever how they incorporated some bits of Shakespeare's plays into it.

I was really disappointed with this weeks episode. From the previes it loked so good, but I found it rubbish to be honest. The next episode looks good, spesh with John :p. I just hope I won't be disappointed then too.

Abi
06-05-2007, 11:29
Can i just point out that John Barrowman isn't in the next episode... That preview at the end was of the whole of the series left (Thats why it said "Coming Soon" across the bottom). They only showed it cause theres no episode next week.

Captain Jack isn't back untill episode 11... Sorry!!

I thought it was good seeing Marthas sister again (Shes the only one of the family that i like). Apart from that, it was a bit iffy. Good that they finally made her a "proper" companion though.

I loved tonights episode, and last week. I think that was the best story since RTD brought Dr Who back. David Tennant reallly pulled off his role, and made it so beleiveable, that he was the same person, but different. Freema Agyemen was amazing as well in it.

Amber
02-06-2007, 21:41
Loved the last two episodes. They were so well written and acted - in the first episode it kept me guessing, like what's happened to the Doctor? Has Martha changed too? Etc etc.. And in the second episode it all sort-of clicked together.

I also loved the idea that John killed himself to save everyone. It was heart breaking, but in a good way.

And also, just thought I'd say that the producer of both episodes, Susie Liggat, used to live with my step-dad :D.. I keep pestering him to ring her and get me a part in the next series

I agree with you Amber. I loved the last two episodes, especially tonights. It was really freaky as well, the family thing were so creepy in them bodies, spesh that smile of Baines hah!! And them scarecrows... enough to scare me for life!!!! And loved David as a vunerable character, and liked the ending when he was like come with me etc. Suchhh an enjoyable ep!! Also was that kid who had the watch, Simon in Nanny McPhee :p??

Jojo
03-06-2007, 00:38
It was Simon indeedy Lea :D

His name is Thomas Sangster

Chloe O'brien

When the Dr gave Simon the watch and you knew he was going of to fight in the war I expected him to die in the conflict. But when you seen him as an older man at the memorial and the dr and martha were there it was a fitting tribute.

Did you notice that as they said "and they will never age" or something along those lines, it cut to the Doctor and Martha? I know it was about the soldiers, but I thought it made sense about them too.

Major squee for John Simm! How great is he going to be?!

I love the fact this is a 3 parter, of sorts. Making links to Family of Blood and Human Nature was clever too.

And who can forget the uberly loveable John Barrowman? His name was in the titles and everything :rotfl: He was great- "Was someone kissing me?!"

Pity theres only 2 episodes left, the last 4 have been some of the best since the new series has come back. The first few were a bit rubbish, but Human Nature, Family of Blood, Blink and Utopia were all great- and the 2 finale ones will probably be even better. Big woop for that!

Bryan
17-06-2007, 18:54
the first decent episode of the whole season - oh my god what a brilliant cliffhanger. When the professor said "i'm the master" it sent a shiver down my spine. Look forward to the 2 part finale. :cheer:

Perception filter -The Doctor says,'it's like you fancy someone and they don't know you exist', Captain Jack looks at Martha who looks back at him and he says ,'You too?'

I am old enough to have seen the very first episode of Doctor Who with William Hartnell and to consider Tom Baker as the definitive Doctor, but I have to say that I think Series Three of the new Doctor Who is exceptional. It has had great stories, brilliantly scripted and marvellously acted. It has been an absolute triumph for the BBC, showing that they can do some things right after all. :)

Abi
26-06-2007, 16:57
I agree. Series 3 has kicked some serious ****. Which is why its now the BBCs flagship show- hardly surprising though, seeing as it was Eastenders before, no competition now!!

I loved the episode. I loved the one liners, and the plot generally. And Voodoo Child is now offically stuck right in my head. Thats not a bad thing though, that song rules.

Series 3 is by far the best series so far of New Who.

Chloe O'brien
28-06-2007, 19:42
There is going to be a great big bag of mixed emotions on Saturday night when the series ends. Last seasons finale was emotional enough when Rose went to the parrell world and she told the Dr she loved him. I had tears in my eyes. I can't wait until Saturday but I don't want the series to end either.

Luna
28-06-2007, 20:53

the holy trinity captain jack the doctor and the master what more could you ask?

Abi
28-06-2007, 21:26
I completly agree Luna!! John Simm, John Barrowman and David Tennant in 1 episode- phoar!!!

Saturdays finale is extra long!!! Its just over 50 minutes, instead of 4 minutes. Might only be 6 minutes, but that makes all the difference!

Chloe O'brien

You can't get a better Saturday night's telly than Mr Tennant, Barrowman and Simm all in the one show. Without going off topic but this years National Television Award for the best Actor is a two horse race between David and Gene Hunt (Phillip Glenstier)

omg face of boa (is that the right way to spell it?) i didnt see that one coming but then it doesnt make any sence - if he is jack then why doesnt he mention it ever to the doctor?? oh i suppose it will all be explained soon enough lol

and martha? i thought she wasnt leaving??? i was expecting that phone to ring as soon as he sent the tardis on its way but no, no phone call

Omg the finale!
Jack! Should have known he was the face of Bo when he said he could never die, after all Bo, is the oldest living thing, so old no-one knew what he was. Of course it had to be Jack!
Loved this ep, though to be honest, i havent enjoyed this series as much as the last, in all honesty i'm still mourning Rose!

Did Martha leave? I was a bit miffed by this, as she kind of did, but my friends saying the actress said she's not leaving.

Didnt cry in this ep, cried loads in last series finale. Though did go awww when David was crying.

My mum wasnt too impressed with The Master though, said he's nothing like he was before?

Overall, i was impressed!

im still in two minds about the ending:

John Simm was brilliant as the master  i love that man!!!- was so funny when he was dancing around to the scissor sisters - infact the last two episodes have had a amazing soundtrack

David tennant was excellent - i nearly cried as the doctor held him in his arms

John Barrowman was class - the face of Bo - so funny

on the whole a excellent ending

a few questions....

where was kylie and the xmas preview?

the master somehow survives - the nail polish wearing hand at teh end that collected the ring??????/

answers on a post card please!

.:SpIcYsPy:.
30-06-2007, 20:53
I watched half of last weeks and when they said this was the final I had to watch it! As I never really watched it before I did not understand anything! Is the face of bo the face that died in that old London (I think) ep. which I also saw a bit of.. usually in a glass case thing? So confused..

I cried when Doc. was crying.. couldn't help it! Why did he want him to reginerate and stay with him though?

+ who what was going on with the fire and then someone with red nail varnish picked up a small object?.. What was going on with the Tardis?!

I knew I should have always watched this :p x

Abi
30-06-2007, 21:04
Hahaha, i loved this episode in the end!! The small doctor thing in the cage was slightly disturbing, very Lord of the Rings, but pretty cool design going on.

I think its well funny Jack is the Face of Boe!!!!

I reckon Martha will be back. They pretty much said so in the Confidential as well. I think they're getting rid of her for the Christmas Epi, so its just David and prob Kylie, and then she'll get picked up again at some point in series 4. There was a story saying something similar in the Mirror today as well, apparently. That the Doctor picks up another companion, and that Martha is like a part time one, like Jack but a bit more regular.

John Simm was fab, i loved him in it. And the whole Doctor rising up thing was very funky too.

I've loved this series. Mainly because Rose wasn't in it. I prefer Martha- she actually has some brains. And she has more depth to her, rather than just being thick.

i read that she will be popping up in the new series and making an appearence in torchwood - so it looks like there will be a new full time companion, it was also hinted at in the confidential show on bbc3 that the character was used to help the doctor get over rose - kind of like a rebound

30-06-2007, 22:07
Captain Jack stole the show, finding out he was the face of Boa sheer brilliance, and John Simm dancing around to the scissor sisters. On the downside they could have had a more explosive ending by the Dr and the Master fighting it out rather than him being shot by is spaced out wife. I guess we will just have to wait until Christmas to see if Martha returns or if the rumours are true that Freema will be axed.

I actually thought the whole program was brilliant, and looking forward to christmas :-)
Sorta sad to see Freema go, cos I really liked her as the Doc's compaion,, to be honest I liked her better than billy piper,, but thats just my OPINION,, so don't attack me :p

from outpost gallifrey

Confirming the essence of a story first reported several weeks ago in the Sun, Freema Agyeman left Doctor Who as a series regular at the end of this episode, choosing to remain behind with her family in present-day England. Agyeman's most recent denial in "Radio Times" stated that she was not sacked from the series, contrary to the Sun report; however, as Outpost Gallifrey and other sites have reported, the news did not deny that Agyeman was leaving as a series regular (nor that she was not remaining by her own choice). The end of "Last of the Time Lords" suggests that we will see Martha again, as she gives her mobile phone to the Doctor (David Tennant), likely as a guest star next series; press reports from the Mirror this past week indicate that the fourth series of Doctor Who will see a new companion next year, with Martha making an occasional appearance. (At the time of the Mirror report, "Last of the Time Lords" had not yet aired, and while the article mentions she "won't be in every episode next year, but will appear in the occasional episode for both Doctor Who and Torchwood," it is likely that this was a bit of obfuscation of the as-yet-unannounced departure.)

UPDATE: Russell T Davies has promised on tonight's Confidential that there will be news soon (a possible press release early next week) about Freema's future with the programme, likely as a guest character or recurring (like John Barrowman this series).

John Barrowman also departs from Doctor Who again, as Captain Jack Harkness returns to his base of operations in Cardiff for the second series of "Torchwood" to be aired later this year.

John Simm will (obviously, from the story) not be returning as the Master in subsequent episodes; however, the theft of his ring by a woman (perhaps Lucy Saxon but possibly someone else entirely) indicates that the Master will perhaps be back in next year's episodes.

Meanwhile, the upcoming 2007 Christmas special will be entitled Voyage of the Damned and has something to do with the voyage of the R.M.S. Titanic, judging from the name of the vessel on the life ring found within the TARDIS in the close of today's episode (not to mention, the ship's hull through the walls of the console room!) There is no word as yet as to who will join David Tennant for the episode, although there has been much media speculation about singer Kylie Minogue (we're not sure yet if these are real or simply press hype.)

I cried when Doc. was crying.. couldn't help it! Why did he want him to reginerate and stay with him though?

I think it was just because The Doctor finally had some hope, he wasnt alone, he wasnt the last time lord, and it's like David Tennant said on confidential, having the master there was a way of making the time lords seem real, like they did exist. I think the Doctor also had some hope of changing the master, making him into a good person, and someone who he could travel with who was like him, and would understand.

Doctor to get extra companion

Doctor Who is to have a new companion when the drama returns - but there will still be room for his current co-star.

Actress Freema Agyeman is to play Martha Jones in three episodes of spin-off show Torchwood. She said it was a chance to "expand" her character.

She will miss the first half of the fourth series of Doctor Who, but will then return to the BBC One programme.

The new companion will be revealed soon and will appear in the entire 13-week run, which begins filming this month.

Former Crossroads actress Agyeman, 28, impressed producers with a brief appearance in the minor role of alien expert Adeola.

They invited her to try for the part of David Tennant's sidekick when Billie Piper left at the end of the second series. The show is in its fourth series since its revival in 2005, having ended previously in 1989 after 26 years.

Martha Jones will spend more time with Torchwood's Captain Jack
The third series of Doctor Who, which concluded in the UK on Saturday, had gained "outstanding reviews", according to Russell T Davies, its executive producer and head writer.

"Freema has been a huge part of that success, gaining rave notices for her portrayal of Martha," he added.

"Now we are taking the character of Martha into brand new territory with a starring role in Torchwood."

In May, Agyeman told BBC News how overwhelming it felt to be constantly recognised in public.

"Everyone's calling my name so it feels surreal," she said, as she walked up the red carpet at the Bafta TV Awards.

The BBC has announced the first casting details for the fourth series of Doctor Who following the acclaimed end of the third series - widely hailed by critics and public alike as the best series yet.

The final episode, screened on Saturday on BBC One, saw The Doctor's companion Martha - played by Freema Agyeman - leave to care for her devastated family, and to break the cycle of unrequited love she feels for The Doctor.

The production team has now confirmed that the character is set to make a triumphant return in the fourth series.

Freema, who gained rave notices for her portrayal of Martha Jones, is also set to join the cast of BBC Three's Torchwood where she will continue to play the character in three new episodes before returning to Doctor Who in the middle of the fourth series.

Doctor Who Executive Producer and Head Writer Russell T Davies said: "Series three has gained outstanding reviews and Freema has been a huge part of that success, gaining rave notices for her portrayal of Martha.

"Now we are taking the character of Martha into brand new territory with a starring role in Torchwood."

Freema said: "I can't wait to start filming on Torchwood and the new series of Doctor Who. It's a huge new challenge for me and I'm delighted Russell has decided to expand the character of Martha Jones."

The announcement leaves a vacant space in the Tardis and a new companion for The Doctor, who will join the new series for the entire 13-week run, will be announced shortly.

The fourth series of Doctor Who goes into production this month.
