Sally Clark - the solicitor wrongly jailed for murdering her two sons - has died, her family has announced.

Mrs Clark, 42, was jailed in 1999 for killing her 11-week-old son Christopher in December 1996 and eight-week-old Harry in January 1998.

A first appeal against the convictions failed in 2000 but she was freed in 2003 after a fresh appeal.

The family's solicitor said she was found dead at her home on Friday. The cause of death is not yet known.

The solicitor's statement said she "never fully recovered" from the effects of the "appalling miscarriage of justice" she suffered, which saw her spend three years in jail.

"Sally... was a loving and talented wife, mother, daughter and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her."

The statement also said the matter was in the hands of the coroner and it was too early to provide any further information.

Angela Cannings, who was herself wrongly convicted of killing two of her sons, said she was "shocked" and "angry" at Mrs Clark's death.

She said: "I'm really speechless, I'm so angry. This lady suffered so much, now she's died, I'm just shocked and stunned."

'Unwise to speculate'

Asked about a suspected cause of death, family solicitor Sue Staple declined to comment. She said: "I think it would be very unwise to speculate about these things.

"She was not suffering from any kind of disease at the time of her death but she was not in the best of health."

Mrs Clark, who was originally from Wilmslow in Cheshire but was living in Chelmsford, Essex, at the time of her death, was convicted of smothering Christopher and shaking Harry to death at the luxury home she shared with her husband Stephen.

Three Court of Appeal judges eventually decided that her conviction was "unsafe".

Professor Sir Roy Meadow, giving evidence during her trial, claimed the probability of two natural unexplained cot deaths in a family was 73 million-to-one.

The Royal Statistical Society and other medical experts disputed the figure and said the odds of a second cot death in a family were around 200-to-one.

Sir Roy was found guilty of serious professional misconduct and struck off the medical register.

However, both of these decisions were overturned on appeal at the High Court.

The Court of Appeal had been told that new medical evidence which suggested Harry Clark may have been suffering from a brain infection was withheld from Mrs Clark's defence team during her trial.

Mrs Clark's barrister, Clare Montgomery QC, said at her successful appeal that new evidence emerged in 2000 that there was a staphylococcus aureus infection which had spread as far as Harry's cerebral spinal fluid.

She said the prosecution pathologist Dr Alan Williams, who had carried out post-mortem examinations on both babies, had known about this evidence since February 1998.

Microbiological test results demonstrated Harry probably died suddenly in reaction to the bacteria, she added.

I don't think she ever recovered from being jailed for the deaths of her children. The family have said that she never recovered from the miscarriage of justice in her being jailed.

Post mortem results are due today.

This is an absolutely disgusting thing to happen to this poor woman. She went through hell upon earth because of the discredited testimony of Professor Sir Roy Meadow. Not only did she go through the obvious trauma of losing her two dear children but spent time in prison for a crime she did not commit. No doubt in prison she was trauamtised further by the taunts and threats that Real Child Killers suffer. No matter how she died Prof Meadows, the police and the CPS should all hang their heads in shame. They are each in my opinion guilty of her death. Of course the tabloids will be full of stories about this and that and loads of speculation. The simple fact is this innocent woman was WRONGLY convicted and this has ultimayely led to her death. No doubt or politicians will shed their usual crocodile tears while actually doing F All about it.

I feel so sorry for her family and friends and am sure her poor husband is devastated.

I cannot express my anger on here without running the risk of commiting libel but I think it sums up the state of British Justice. An innocent woman is dead and the professor who is responsible for telling untruths and those in the CPS who witheld VITAL information are walking around.

I hope you can all sleep in your beds tonight:angry:

It makes me ashamed to be English Alan, it really does.

This poor woman suffered the loss of her children, then was jailed wrongly for those deaths and like you said, probably suffered so much disgusting treatment in prison that is normally reserved for real child killers, and Prf Roy Meadows and co are having the times of their lives.

It makes me sick

My thoughts are with her poor husband who supported her through the whole ordeal. He has lost his children, lost years with his wife and now lost her altogether. How he can go on...he must be heart broken.

It just shows how someones life can be destroyed by careless work (on the part of these 'expert' witnesses)

:
Its not just English justice. Its British Justice in general. We have a major one on over here where a thug who beat a sleeping man with a hammer and left him with brain damage was let out on parole and done a runner

No-one ever considers the victims and Sally Clarke was a victim of the state's antiquated judicial system. She was a solicitor as was her husband yet they convicted her. What hope do us mere mortals have. The honourale prof was struck off by the BMA/GMC and yet reinstated. Jobs for the boys or what:angry:

Was shocked to hear of Sally Clarke's passing. So very very sad and I cant even begin to comprehend how her husband and other family mebers are feeling.

Dont even get me started on the judicial system - its a joke. More help is given to the criminals than the victims - well thats my own personal experience.

We as a populace should demand to know why vital information was witheld from the trial. How could Sally's convinction be a safe one? Truth was it wasn't - which thankfully came to light and she was released - but how can you give someone their mental freedom - we will never know what she had to endure as a 'percieved child killer'. So sorry she died.

If its any comfort I guess she is with her children, but so sad for her husband. My thoughts are with him and the family.

This is a tragic end of an innocent woman's life, which was torn apart by some so called expert. Sally never recovered from being wrongly accused of mudering her children and had to go through the pain and humiliation of being locked up. When she was eventually released from prison she was ignored by the justice system and her and her husband were left without any support or guidance. Let's hope Sally can finally be at peace and free of pain.

I also heard soemthing about she had a drink problem since being released.

It's really sad that she's died. Not only did she have the two deaths of her sons to deal with but she was wrongly convicted of killing them. I can't beging to understand what he husband is going through after losing his family in such tragic circumstances.
