Did anybody watch this last night?

I was really shocked at how hard the trainer pushed her and how little she ate. I didn't realise that after you starve yourself for a while then start eating again it goes back on mainly as fat. I noticed that the doctor didn't mention about how the body goes into starvation mode after a few days of not eating enough.

She must have had a lot of willpower to only eat 800 calories a day.

yeah she must have. This was the main talking point with the girls in my year at school today.

It was truely shocking that she did get to become a size zero. I mean the regime involved; the workout, the fist size eating thing, the will power...
I was really shocked to find out that this is effecting kids as young as 12 years old - that just aint right!

The really scary thing was that she did it in just 30 days.

The place where she visited, Rhodes Farm, was a documentry on anorexic teenagers a few months ago on BBC3. It was really shocking the lengths the patients went to to hide their food. The 12yr old and the 15yr old (Phillipa) were both in it. The woman who runs the clinic said she's had girls as young at 8 admitted!

I watched the show but I dont think it was a real represesntation. Most girls wouldnt drop 2 dress sizes in a month. therfore dont get all the issues she had. Yes its illustrating the dangers but it wasnt really that accurate,

you would be surprised CB.. if you are on a diet that extreme than yes you can drop 2 dress sizes.. look at you are what you eat.. they are eating and healthy and yet I have seen some of them drop 3 sizes in 8 weeks.. Plus that Special K add advertises drop jean size in 2 weeks...

true. I hadnt thought of that.

It just really annoys me the way everyone is going on about size 0 at the moment. Im size 0 but i dont consider myself to be ill. I dont exercise that much and i eat when i want

I know a few size 0 who eat like pigs, I think the reason they go on about it is there are girls who clearly are killing themselves to become that size. If it is natural to you then you don't have to worry but look at girls as young as 8 not eating to become thin.

Yeh 8 year olds not eating is realy worrying. Its sad when they have to think that if they dont eat they will be pretty.

Its a pain in the ass being so small, you cant find fitting clothes,. and when you are dress shopping and the size 6 is too big the woman states that they dont stock size 4 because they believe its wrong e.t.c it turns into a nightmare to fine the dress.

I found it very emotional to watch the young girls suffering from eating disorders. I have an 8 year old daughter and she thinks that Paris Hilton and others look fab. I have to explain to her that it is dangerous to be that thin.

In the newspaper today it was discussed that girls who were trying to achieve to be a size zero where more determined to be it after watching this programmes as they felt the programme gave them good tips.

I don't see how it is wrong.. some women are naturally thin and need clothes. People I know like that have to go to kids department and they get sick of wearing kids clothes

I agree some people are natrually thin, matabolism, genetics etc, but it is worrying the amount who are not like that and make themselves suffer in order to be the same. My sister knows someone who suffered and she became really messed up because of it.

I watched the first hour of this and thought she was brave to do what she was foing and it also scared me, but some people can be naturally thin and may be a size Zero, but I thought it was a good idea to do this program as I think its point across

She got to size 0? We only saw part of it in PSHE, but the way the teacher was summarising the remainder it was as if she didn't make it. At size 8 there's not a lot of weight that you can lose, and you're limited to the amount that you can lose by your height.

I also have the same problem as cb, i am naturally very small, and i am not ill, i eat what i want when i want etc, but places don't make either size 6 or clothes that are an accurate representation of size 8. i used to be a good size 8, but i think that companies have made clothes bigger, as a size 8 a year ago imo, is not a size 8 now. i watched this programme, and thought that it was exceptionally sad that people have that much pressure put on them to be thin- who, at 12 years old, apart from the media, has that pressure on them? i can't really imagine that....

Yeah, she started at 18.4 and 7st 10lbs. She finished at 17.6 and weighed 6st 11lb.

Some people are naturally skinny, eat like a horse and not put anything on. My teacher is about 5 foot 8 and she's so thin it's unbelieveable. He BMI is in the dangerous area (she didn't say what it was but it was well below) but she doesn't have an eating disorder. She eats well and doesn't have any signs of a "typical" anorexic.

The media have to shoulder a lot of the blame for this. Every magazine you pick up contains a diet that claims to help you lose 7lbs a week. Newspaper print pictures of stick thin celebs. If the newpapers didn't print them, young girls wouldn't see them as much and aspire to be like them.

I have to agree with whoever said that it could encourage people/young girls to llose weight. There were a lot of hints like the 800 calories and exercise regime that would help/accelerate weight loss.

I would have thought they'd make them smaller. My teacher was talking about the way in which the media focusses so much on size 4, 6, 8 (UK sizes) that it makes people who are sizes 10, 12 etc, which are not big sizes to be, think that they are fat. It would give even more power if people thought they were fat because they couldn't fit into a particular size any more.

i think they make them bigger, so people have to put on weght to be able to buy clothes :s i think that because i am now a size 6 instead of 8, which is what i used to be

Em.. don't worry.. only some places are like that.. I have no clue now what size I am.. In Penney (Primark) I am a size 8 in trousers but 12 in Jeans (go figure) and in Germany I got a 36 (which apparently is an 8) but over here I wear 38 (which is a 10)... I don't understand how sizes are working nowadays and I have to try everything on.. before I could just grab a pair of size 10 and it was fine.. now it is all over the place

Does anyone else find this is the case too???

This size 0 rubbish is really insiduous.

The height of the person is almost never mentioned.

If someone is 5ft then size 12 may be plump - at my height (5ft 9.5) a size zero is ill.

When I was younger the latest fad was the cambridge diet - 330 cals per day. I can remember getting it when I was 9 stone - already underweight for my height.

The people who run these diet companies are often charletons.

If you are healthy and fit - forget about your weight and size.

Don't worry Shiv - I'm back in a size 14 at the mo and happy. Sizes vary so much from shop to shop and I know my backside or bust measurements haven't changed that much between shops. Just the middle one at the mo :rotfl:

There are so many different diet fads going on with one one year, a different one the next - why can't everyone just be themselves and not have to worry about peoples opinions on them because of their appearance.

It varies from country to country aswell - the US seems to want stick thin at the mo (or at least LA) yet Fiji love the bigger woman (maybe I should head over there :D  )

I find that sizes do differ from shop to shop. I can buy a size 10 top in Peacocks but in Dorethy Perkins I am a 12. Finding trousers to fit me is a nightmare so I stick to jeans but I vary between a 10 and a 12 in DP's. I have a size 10 pair of jeans that fit at the hips but my legs seem to disappear beneath them but my size 12's fit perfectly. It's so confusing trying to buy clothes :searchme:

I lived in Germany for a while a few years ago and I found that if you're larger than a size 12/14 you have no chance of buying decent clothes unless you go to a very large town or city. I don't think I saw any woman larger than a 12/14 in all the time I was there.

BMI isn't always an accurate calculation. If you're very muscly then you will have a higher BMI than somebody of the same height and build as muscle weighs more than fat.

:clap::clap: very well said.. I dont' understand why women are not happy with their appearance and just enjoy food.. Our parent didn't give a damn.
I perfer curves to flat!! and it was agreed with Irish men, there top woman for 2006 was Martine McClutheon and there is no way she is a size 0.

And you really think about it, the people was are killing ourselves for are on magazine which airbrush, touchup and completely change the person before it is sent out.. I am going to go with the Dove slogan, real beauty!!! We are not size 0 and proud!!!

what I was shocked to find is that most stores now class as size 12 as large to extra large.. now as far as I was aware, all models where size 12 and I don't think they are considered to be a Large!!!

Really though, in this day and age you just can't win. If you're a size zero you get slated but if you're obese you get slated as well. Media keep going on about being size zero and how models are setting a bad example to young girls then the next breath they're on about children being obese and how it's the parent's faults.

It's appalling the way the media make a big song and dance out of dress sizes and who's fault it is. If they didn't print pictures of stick thin models then would we really know all about being size zero? Would young girls aspire to be like them had they not seen the pictures they print?

Grant_fan
15-03-2007, 10:09
they are trying to kill them selves because they want to be size zero and also people are getting ill because they are large. the model that are size zero don't think that young people are wanting to be like them so people go on a very long diets.

There just seems to be so much pressure about being skinny. Up to my early 20's I was a size 8, people used to say it was great. I was 5ft 11 and my bones used to stick out. I look at the photos I had done at a fashion show we did and I actually think it looks horrible.

I got sick and put on a lot of weight, went up to a size 20. I decided buy smaller dinner plates, exercise more, walk where I could (when able) and drink more water. The weight fell off. Now I am a size 12/14, back down to 12 stone and I am fairly happy with how I look. Some people I know are obsessed with how other people look, my mum being one of them. She still tells me I could lose more weight, and maybe I could, but Im still taking things fairly easy after my op (3 months ago had hysterectomy), although I now exercise as it makes me feel good.

My neice is 14 and quite tall. She is not fat, nor skinny skinny but as she tells people she is who she is. Great attitude. As long as your weight is not giving you health problems and you are happy then its other peoples problems not yours.

People like Martine McCutcheon, Dawn French are great role models for the supposedly Larger lady...I am much happier since accepting who I am than when I was worried about not being a size 10 and thinking I was a human elephant.

Thought Louise Rednapp did a grerat job though of showing the emotional impact that dieting can have too.

One of the girl made it but put back on half a stone 2 weeks of the diet. the other one developed bulima from the experiment. I watched it and thought the lady who got bulimia shouldnt have done it as she already had a problem with food, and she has just made it look bad on the show after the other lady has showed how bad it is, but has now managed to start gainging weight.
But I think these shows are wrong anyway as yeah they show what problems it can lead to, it also shows people how easy it is to do, and most of them do look better when they got to the size 0 or 00

double zero would be a size 2 in the UK... that is what an 8 year old would fit into.. that is just madness if you ask me

I thought size 00 is what a 6 year old wears and size 0 would be for an 8 uear old. That's what I heard anyways. I think pretty soon there could be a size 000 because I swear people can be thinner than that! It's all going so mad. I think they should offer advice on being a healthy weight not somthing which makes your bones stick out all over the place!

Either way, it's still not right for people to be that thin. I can't even comprehend fitting into a 6year old's clothes.

Give it 6months to a year and people won't be talking about size zero as much. It's just another one of those stupid "crazes" that people feel compelled to follow.

There was another program like this on BBC2 last night at 8pm. The lass was a size 10 - 12, 10st 9lb, trying to get down to a size 0.

She went to a propper sports centre where they did all these tests like they do on top atheletes and told her she was perfectly healthy. She then went to a holistic doctor who weighed her and told her she was obese!! It was something to do with internal fat around the organs but she was so shocked and upset by what he'd said. He gave her 6 different supplements to increase her metabolism and aid weight loss.

The dietician at the sports centre gave her a structured diet of 500 calories a day (2 apples, 2 black coffees, piece of chicken and some salad leaves) but the holistic guy said she should be eating more to lose weight. He said to maintain a healthy and steady weight she only needs 1300 calories a day (guidelines for women is 2000) which isn't much.

She had this gorgeous green satin dress made in a size zero for when she finished the diet but unfortuantly (or fortuantly, whichever way you look at it) she wasn't thin enough to fit in it.

The lass was Dawn Porter :) It was actually a repeat but I decided to watch it again. I liked the end bit where she left the GORGEOUS satin dress on a skeleton and gave it to the modelling agency :p

I have been trying to lose weight.. not much cause I am not overweight.. I read loads of stuff on weight loss and consequences.. if you eat less than 1200 calories a day, go body goes into famine mode and your body stops your muscles from working as they should to save energy.. you are correct, to lose weight, you should eat more frequent.

Unfortunately my diet is not working and I don't know why so going to see a doctor.. I have replaced chocolate and crisps with fruit and veg, it is 4 weeks now and i haven't lost 1lb... I increase my exercise by 30 mins more a day.. and nothing..

Tell me about starvation mode... been there, done that. You actually put weight on instead of losing it for a while before losing it. When you eat very little the body stores it as fat because it doesn't know when it's next going to get food. The weight drops off quickly after 1-2 weeks.

It's quite scary when you read about the side effects of starvation/extreme dieting.

That dress was to die for, I'd kill for that dress (in a larger size, of course :) ).

i know they were on a while ago, but i watched both of these programmes. it was horrible watching them at some points, seeing what people go through to get really skinny and how some really young kids are now getting eating disorders

when i was in america a few years ago i bought a pair of jeans which were a size 0, then i didnt realise how small that actually was (the man in the shop, when i asked what sort of size, told me a size 0 would fit and when it did i thought that would be the equivilent to our size 8 not a size 4!). i personally dont think im that skinny so was shocked that i fit into that size. although i eat healthy im pretty sure i eat over 2000 calories most days yet i was worried when i was watching the programme when they were saying about how when you starve yourself your bones start to show, seeing as you can frequently see mine and i would hate it if people thought i was starving myself

i agree with what other people have said in this thread about clothes not being the same size in every shop, its really annoying having to try every item of clothing on before you buy it to make sure its the right size. whats even more annoying is that even in the same shop i have to buy different sizes
