FORMER Albert Square doc Tom Ellis has landed a major role in Doctor Who.

Tom, 28 — best known as Dr Oliver Cousins — was last seen romancing down-trodden Little Mo in BBC1 soap EastEnders.

The hunky actor — who wed sexy ex-EastEnder Tamzin Outhwaite, 36, last year — will play a character called Tom Milligan in the BBC sci-fi smash.

Last night, a show insider would only say: “Tom plays a crucial role in the season finale of Doctor Who.”

Tom is due to begin filming in Wales next week for the third series, which hits screens in the spring.

TV Biz has already revealed Life On Mars star John Simm, 36, is being lined up to play Doctor Who’s evil nemesis — The Master. Shakespearean actor Sir Derek Jacobi, 68, will appear at the end of the series as a ‘good guy’ called The Professor.

But the Doctor discovers the Professor is really The Master — when he dies and regenerates in the big shock of the series.

Tom is the latest in a long line of EastEnders stars to time-travel. Michelle Collins, who played Cindy Beale, will appear in the new series as a character called McDonnell.

Barbara Windsor had a cameo in the last series while Tracy-Ann Oberman, who played Chrissie Watts, was Torchwood boss Yvonne Hartman.
