Channel Four bosses are to make a statement on the future of Celebrity Big Brother after coming under huge pressure to axe the show.

The broadcaster has come in for fierce criticism from politicians and campaigners over its handling of the race row involving Jade Goody and Shilpa Shetty.

The attitude of Channel 4 chairman, Luke Johnson, has in particular been called into question.

The chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality, Trevor Phillips, said: "If the Channel 4 board doesn't say that Johnson was wrong not to talk about it last week, that his executives were wrong to say there was no racism involved, if the board does not take that stand then I think Tessa Jowell, the Culture Secretary, has to step in and ask if this is the board that is capable of holding a public asset in trust for us."

A Sky News poll saw respondents vote overwhelmingly in favour of chopping the show from the schedules.

Board members are due to meet today and a statement is expected after 6pm.

Agreed - both BB and CBB has gone stale in my opinion - they should end it on a good note, not a bad one 3 years down the line

They should axe it once and for all. The first series was good 7 years ago but now people only go in for their 15mins of fame. They come out "celebrities."

This year's celeb version only had 3million viewers until the Jade-Shilpa saga hit the news. I wonder if it took BB/C4 so long to decide what to do because they knew they would most likely get more ratings that they already had and make the show appear sucessful.

No way should they!

take it off for a year, havea look at it and start again! go back to the old days when it was normal people going in and more task based!

I think so- it's past it's sell by date, and it's always the same. they go in and throw a tantrum and win instant fame. a la nikki. i think ratings are too important now though- if the programme is aimed at a minority but put against something else it is axed because it is not popular whereas it is really to do with the fact that it is aimed at a minority

I know I loved in then and one year they did the live tasks I though that was great!

I said yes just because of the way it is at the moment but im in two minds because i think it should be axed because its not the same as the first few are its changed alot and no one does anything and it is quite frankly boring but however if they were to make it back to how it was before with tasks and such (i remember the year Jade was in it had tons of tasks) then it could get good again therefore i wouldnt mind it being on (this is both BB and CBB)

Just realised it said CBB not normal bb!

i dont mind if they axe cbb, apart from last year none have ben great. This years would have been fine if they hadnt added the goody family

no way, this has all been a storm in a tea cup

each year it causes controversry and carries on, this one a bit more but it will live on, it's channel 4's most talked about show, gets best ratings and earns them so much money trough voting and sponsor deals

to axe it over this would be daft, as long as the fans want it they will keep it on air, they just need to have a rethink about the format, and stop making it the 13 week freak show that it is

i for one would feel cheated if they axed it now, it has many years left in it yet

both BB's should go. BB hasn't really been that great since people cottoned onto how it could make them famous (ie after the first one) and it's been getting progressively worse every year...plus BB have been manipulating who goes in and what they do way too much now.

I think CBB should be axed but definetly not the original BB! The Celebrity version should be axed, as quite frankly more than half of the people that go in i have never heard of before and i don't really class them as "celebrities" at all, i just think it's all a bit pointless as it's just like the normal BB with only a few faces in there that i already know plus they just go in to try and boost their careers even more (Jade Goody being an example) or to try and become famous again, i just find it a waste of time to be honest, they've had their 15 minutes of fame!

The original BB i think can survive. It's great entertainment, they just need to make it more task-based and not try and make it more and more controversial and shocking every year. I always enjoyed the normal BB, but not the celebrity version.

Axe both, they are just total rubbish viewing. No one coming out should've been named as celebrities as they have done NOTHING to earn that status.

You know what, this will sound odd but sometimes the celeb ones are more normal than the normal ones its odd, but the things with the celeb ones is its always people who are well ex- celebs if you like and I do get bored of too many celeb programs.

Celebrity Big Brother will not be axed, Channel 4 has confirmed. The channel's board, however, has indicated that "a review of the editorial and compliance processes that support Big Brother" will take place.

Channel 4's statement in full:

"The Channel 4 board recognises that the events of the last week on Celebrity Big Brother have provoked an unprecedented level of public complaint. We believe this has triggered an important debate.

"Clearly many people were worried and offended by what they saw. I want to reassure them that we take the views of our audience very seriously and profoundly regret any offence that may have been caused.

"On behalf of the board, the Chief Executive and I have commissioned a review of the editorial and compliance processes that support Big Brother. The board will receive a full report and seek to identify any lessons that can be learned for the future. The programme remains on air for a further week and the channel is focused on its completion.

"We are expecting to hear from Ofcom in the near future detailing the nature and number of complaints they have received and requesting a formal response to their questions. Our own review will also help support this process.

"All board members of Channel 4 abhor racism. We are also committed to ensuring that the channel continues to fulfil its remit to explore important social issues."

Yes!
Mainly because it is rubbish. Why are they getting paid for doing nothing but live in a house?

I would watch it if they put all the vacuous celebs, Abi Titmus, Rebecca Loos, Jordan, Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson etc in the house. Then seal off all the air vents and watch them talk about them selves till the oxygen runs out :)

I think that is why I never took to CBB.. I don't know any of the celebs and it is boring most of the time.. Unlike I'm a celeb (at least those are a bit more known ) and they have tasks everyday so it keep you entertained and come on.. how many of us love seen celebs suffer by eat kangaroo bum???

Jordan and Jodie Marsh - now that I would watch. They hate each other so I'd love to see the sparks fly. Reading through that list, Jordan is the only "true" celebrity. Abi slept with John Leslie, Rebecca had an affair with Becks, Paris just spends her inheritance and Jodie is a dog who wears too much make up. Hardly claims to fame. Perfect for CBB! Everybody who's a nobody in the celeb world.

Agree. At least I'm a celeb producers don't let them sit around *all* day gossiping about their personal lives or bullying each other.
Plus, I'm a celeb has decent presenters. Davina should be sacked, she's well passed it.
