Who do you contact if you suspect that someone is "hijacking" (if thats the right term) someone elses internet connection, even if it is a secure network ??

My neighbour, who is extremely dodgy (hides his car so the cops can't find it, doesn't tax it, has bailiffs after him etc apart from letching at every female that walks within a 2 mile radius), when he is on his laptop, sits it precariously balancing on the window sill, with net curtain around it and the window wide open, even in the current gale force winds and torrential rain that we are experiencing.

His brother has just moved around the corner, and mentioned to a friend of mine that he was in the process of sorting out his internet access, but may latch on to someone elses in the meantime, to which she replied, can you actually do that? He said, that as long as you had a certain programme, you could, but then said that he probably wouldn't do it.

Whenever I've seen the brother hanging out the window, there have been a couple of wireless networks within connecting distance, so I'm pretty sure this is what hes doing, but who would you report your suspicions to? If he can and is hacking into connections, can he also be doing the same with email accounts etc?

You're probably all thinking I'm a right stick in the mud, but this guy is someone to be very wary about and I'm not paying £20 per month just for him to get free internet access.

Would this be a police matter as a type of hacking or ...?

I would say it is a hacking problem but you have to be sure.. I know that in certain pub in Dublin (cause they are near Esat phone boxes) will pick up a wireless connection. Some phone boxes have wireless connection setup.. Do you have this in your area?

If not, you could try report this to your wireless company and see if they have an ip protection system to use with your connection.. not sure if that is possible

We live in a cul de sac with no phone boxes within a 10 minute walking distance.

The other concern is that he apparently works for BT (who is our isp), and his brother also admitted to the neighbour that there are ways and means of getting round everything...

Ah ok.. I am not sure what you can do.. I think TM was saying that a person can pick up your connection but not your IP address and I don't think he could get your password just from your IP address

Mind you he works for BT so could get a hold of your records.. I would report him to BT and see what they do.

If you suspect he is using your Internet Acess wait until sometime you definately know he is surfing the net. Watch him and get your hubby or someone to switch off your router. If he looks over at you when his connection disappears then you will know. Smile at him and give him the two fingered salute. Then report him to BT

When I set the wireless network to go to my desktop, I had to enter the ssid and passphrase as the security. Do you have this? I don't think anyone could get these without coming in your house.

Its all secure Kim and this is the concern especially when a) he works for the isp b) is as dodgy as he is, and c) his brother has a programme that can apparently unencrypt (if thats a word) peoples secure networks.

putting it like that then it could be a matter for the police. Working for BT he has a duty under contract if hes breaking that then maybe they will sack him.
