View Full Version : Is Music Going Downhill?
Is music going downhill? I think it is - I mean there are bands that practically copy everyone else (Razorlight & The Kooks do IMO) and alot of dance music is just remixes of old songs (eg - Leo Sayer). But then again I do really love some of the stuff in the charts right now.
What do you think?

I think that in some ways music is going down - this is mostly to do with the industry in that people who dont do well in music reality shows, can just get a single out even if its complete utter rubbish, but still we go out and buy it and they get their 5 minutes of fame & we ignore the unheard artists out there. Then there are those artists who cant let it go, they stay around producing albums and songs that will fail after they have had huge sucess.
But dont get me wrong i love most of the music being produced now and listen to it alot.

I think most definately yes! Music these days is utter crap (With the exception of a few). But then I guess we're all different. Cause I absolutly can't stand all this rap "music", dance stuff and RnB. There are a few good bands about (The Fratellis being one :p) and a few good pop artists out there. But nowhere near as good as the 80s even (I wasn't an 80s child, but you hear it about :p)
Bring back good bands like ACDC, Zeppelin, etc :p
That's my opinion anyway ^_^
I can't stand half of the music thats produced these days, but then in the other sense, I don't really listen to the radio or charts or anything, so haven't a clue who the latest artists/styles/genres are......age must be creeping up on me !! :rotfl:

That may be so, but it doesn't make it any easier for me to listen to the radio etc - my main listening is either Nick Jr or doing invoicing/accounts and VAT returns. Its not about my age really - its about having the time to be able to sit and listen to music, and I personally don't have any... :D

And that told me! So slap my wrist and call me Malcom
Alright Malcom.....
All I'm saying is that I don't get a chance to listen to the charts or anything, so don't know whats in them - I never have been a great music fan.
LOL oh dear im 27! i know some of the chart music but only if i hear it when in car on radio!! Iam a fan fof the oldies ( although to me it aint old LOL and old skool is what i was dancing around to in the clubs , that scares me)
As you say ems i know more kiddie music now than anything else! Lazytown bing bang i knew even before it was in the charts and im very proud of that fact  Give me the older music anyday!
problems are the manufactured boy bands - who wants them, honestly?
and these reality singers do my head in, except for Leona as she actually has talent.
also all the covers of old songs - theres plenty of words in the world, rearrange them and you can get new songs
but there are some great bands and artists out there, music has its moments, but there are good things coming out of it!

That's fair enough, i have radio one when i'm on the way to work, and on the way home, most of the time, so i hear a fair amount. But i love Music, i live for Music, so that probably got something to do with it.

I think music is going downhill in some ways, there are a load of cover songs these days that really annoy me! Can't they be original and make up their own material?! but i am not a mad music fan so i'm not always aware of what is in the charts etc, but seriously i could dance to anything, i don't really have a favourite type of music, i like a variety of music and i listen to Radio 1 most of the time and i can listen to anything that they play on there...so in that way, i don't think music is going downhill as i can still bear to listen!
I don't think so really, a lot of my all time favourite songs are from 2006, and I've bought the most CD's I ever have in any one year in 2006. I see what you're saying about remixes though, didn't mind the Leo Sayer, but girls aloud was dreadful. Some people really have lost their tastes though, with some of the stuff that is at the top of the charts at the moment - it should be turned backwards!

Bar the invoice return and VAT stuff.. this is exactly like me.. I don't have time to listen to music in the charts much and it is mainly kids programes on the TV. If I do hear chart music, it is generally in the car or at my sisters (she has the radio on 24/7). I do try to keep up with things so I know what my daughter is on about.
Generally I like the older music... but I occasionally let myself slip by getting a dance record

I think music is going down hill, there was times back in the 90's that almost every album i got i liked all but if not certainly over half of the songs but now if i get an album (baring the odd one or two) i like 2/3 songs from it which is why i dont buy cds anymore unless they are ones i know i like quite a few on (for instance i got one for xmas it was now thats what i call number ones and it consists of the top 20 number ones from 80's 90's and 00's)
I have thats what i call number ones.
I tink it is going downhill but its all what you want to listen to. Ill have Radio 1 on sometimes as background noise, but i prefer listening to older CDs, Im into traditional music at the minute as well as i have a new whistle so i am trying to learn some new tunes by listening to my dads CDs of Mike McGoldrick, Jackie Daly, CTL and other people who play music. I also dont mind listening to new classical music by new composers.
I am quite pleased with my music taste as it is quite broad. So if i dont like pop for the day, ill did out another genres.

on the whole i would say yes it is.
it says a lot about the music today when they have to cover so much of the old stuff and then they dont do it half as well!
for me the singers have to be able to sing a good tune and sing in tune too so thats rap out for me as they just talk it! also so many of the artists today really have awful singing voices if you listen to them properly.
saying that i do like some of the stuff out today but only listen to the radio when im in the car or i just listen to CD's at home.
Mark Goodier who does the official top 40 chart wrote a column in the Sun newspaper today. He agreed that music has been going downhill since the late 90's and it was mainly due to the record companies just releasing what they think will make the top 5, not what people want to hear.
I think it's this week that, for the first time ever, all downloads are going to count towards the number one. Which means that anyone could reach the top spot even if they haven't released their single yet. A much better system IMO, how many people these days buy singles when they can download? Also, it will be unlikey to be a dead cert on who will make it to number one like it was for X Factor.
It's a step in the right direction for music. Now all we have to do is get rap, r n b and hip hop out of the top 40...
i think it is, and because people will buy anything, with the influence of the internet. there are lots of covers around. i also think that there is too much competition in the charts, and if you don't go in at number one the first week then it's a slop apparently, but my mum is always saying that it would take a few weeks for a song to get to number one, which never seems to happen anymore. so, imo i think it's gone down and also the chart is full of rap, rnb etc which is good in moderation but that's all i seem to hear!
I think the introduction of Internet music counting towards the chart will change this though. I mean more people use the internet now rather than buying a single. I personally cannot rememeber the last time i bought a single from a shop. I think that it will introduce what people actually want to hear.

I have quite a wide taste in music, i prefere oldies like Frank Sinatra i am also quite fond of alot of country music, im into people such as the capenters, Cindi Lauper, Michael Jackson, Spandau Ballet and other people like that but then i also like a couple of songs by Rihanna some by Avril Lavigne (sp) but i cant buy albums now unless it has a wide range of different music on (like the now number ones cos it has 3 different eras of music on) and actually like every song thats on it
yeah exactly theres no point in me buying CDs either as i only like about 1/4 of thetracks at that. I also find alot of music samey now. THeres only room for one Oasis, no one else can be them.
The only Cds ill buy now are albums of my favourite favourite artists. And ionly have two of them, westlife and Take That. I could listen to them all day. Im also into Irish traditional music and Folk tunes, so i have CDs by Heidi Talbot which ill listen to.
Compilations are a definalte no no for me now though. As i dont like the majority of the tracks. s

mainstream music maybe. The music industry tends to find a successful formula and stick to it till they kill it. There was the huge surgance of nu metal, then it was hip/hop, now it's those all the same indie rocker emo boys. It leaves little room for diversity but there are great and original artists out there. There will always be good music you just might not hear it in the mainstream media so often.
i have to agree, everything you have said there is spot on. When a hit comes out, all of a sudden theres a rush of people with simular music.
I reckon the introduction of the internet will have a big influence on music like i said in my previous post.
I voted for YES but i wouldn't say it was totally bad, i mean there are still quite a few good and decent bands around, what about Keane, they are awesome and even more so live.

I'm not sure really. I think in some ways it has as the 80's were the best era for music (or so i've heard anyway). But you do still regularly hear some great tracks every so often, mostly from bands like Snow Patrol, Razorlight, Oasis, The Feeling, etc. I do think club music has gone downhill though. I mean it's still good but most of it today isn't in the same league as bands like Underworld, The Original, Daft Punk, etc. There's too many wannabe bands around today.. that's what I think anyway.

I think the best music these days comes from indie bands like these. All of the bands are original, they haven't been put together on a reality show and they don't do covers. Perfect combination. Except The Feeling (I think, may be wrong), the rest have been around for years.
To be honest Im 50/50 on this one, its like in some cases yes as I hate it when a 'dance' song gets in the charts, do you know the ones i mean? I just cant stand them with all their remixs, but on the other hand there are some realll good songs that come out.
