I'm surprised Emmerdale didn't get more people. I don't watch it, but from what I've heard from various people, it was a great episode?

I'm not really surprised that Eastenders got the top ratings, after all a legend who had been in the show since the beginning was departing even if it was dissapointed. I am quite surprised Emmerdale didn't get higher in the ratings, it may have only got exciting in the last 5/10 minutes but there were lots of hype over the murder of Tom King that i thought more people may have tuned in.

Out of all the shows shown on Christmas Day, the Vicar of Dibley actually was the highest rated show with 11 million viewers, with Eastenders second. :)

No surprises at all, although the Vicar of Dibley rating higher surely must say something to the BBC?

Deadenders was always going to get top ratings. It was highly overhyped they put Emmerdale up against Dr Who so it was a cert to be low.

Its strange that all year when Corrie stuffs DE in the ratings all year the EE apologists claim ratings dont matter. Strangely if it tops any ratings then the ratings are fantastic anbd EE is brilliant

Random question.... but you know the ratings... are they based just on the first showing, or on the repeats too?? Like BBC Three/ITV2??

How do they actually work out the ratings? Always wondered that. If Jim'll Fix it was still on I'd have written in to ask...good ol' Jim.

I think that they look at a load of people in a certain area and work out what they're watching, and the number of people who watch a certain programme are multiplied to work out an average of how many people watched a certain show, so ratings aren't entirely accurate. And Lea, the ratings don't count for repeats or recordings, just for watching it when it's on.

I think I've done enough explaining of ratings everywhere to last a lifetime!

Emmerdale clashed with Dr Who which was helped by EE being on beforehand and with a strong following. Corrie also clashed with Strictly Come Dancing. When the line-up of the beeb's is that strong, it's a case of damage limitation for ITV. When you consider meanwhile that at 9pm you had the choice of an iconic character leaving and Doc Martin, there was only going to be one winner.

Not really. Doc Martin is usually a ratings winner for ITV and they would have been hoping it would put a hole in the BBC ratings. Also, ITV deliberately tried to sabotage EE on Christmas Eve by starting Heartbeat at 7.30 so that nobody would turn over at 8.00 for EE. That failed too.

If people had wanted to watch Corrie or Emmerdale they would have. That's what everyone says about EE when Emmerdale does the hour special starting half an hour earlier to stop people turning over. Even if they do then watch at 10 pm. But then this forum has turned into an EE hate site, mainly used by Emmerdale and Corrie fans.

What is it with all these ITV conspiracy theories. EE was a cert to win the ratings wars with the death of Pauline Fowler which was hyped beyond belief. ITV programmes up against flagship shows like Dr. Who and Strictly Come dancing performed very well and were certainly regarded by most people on here and on another soap board as being far in front of the dross  served up by Eastenders.

If you enjoyed EE then I'm happy for you. I didnt.

I think BBC had a better line up for the whole night, so i think that could influence it people just done change channel. It also gets more viewers anyway christmas or not so that could explain a fiew as well.

Anyway the ratings seem to have returned to normal after Christmas

Wednesday ratings:

Coronation Street: 9.3 million (36%)
Emmerdale: 8.2 million (37%)
Eastenders: 7.7 million (31%)

But it's not as strong a show as, say, SCD or Dr Who. Its share is normally lower than those two mentioned BBC shows.

If people had wanted to watch Corrie or Emmerdale they would have.
Also add EE into that. :) But then it is Christmas, and scheduling gets thrown out of the window. I have missed several episodes of the big three already this week, and I'm not the only one, all because the schedules have developed in an ad-hoc fashion over the festive period.

But then this forum has turned into an EE hate site, mainly used by Emmerdale and Corrie fans.

Can't say I have noticed. It might be you don't agree with their opinions which is an entirely different kettle of fish, which is fine. If we all agreed on the same thing, forums would be dull places. :) I don't think there is a mass of users calling for any one soap (EE or others) to be axed or anything like that, so I don't see how SB is an 'EE hate site'.

Seeing it that low made me laugh for some reason..
But if you think about it it's what you would expect after the Christmas dissapointment.. And the sadness still continues:rolleyes:

Well no doubt EE and Corrie were affected by being out of place. Rare for Emmerdale to have more viewers than BOTH their rivals, so well done to them.

In spite of all the hype about the fallout from Paulines death it would seem that EE still cannot overtake Corrie in the ratings

Friday's Ratings:
Coronation Street 11.2m (47.3%)
EastEnders 10.4m (42.4%)
Emmerdale 8.9m (40.8%)
