Episode 13.1/2 Bloodline and Graduation Day

Coburn delivers the kid and my scenario, the abruption as described in my post earlier today is indeed what happens. Despite the fact that regional anesthesia is contraindicated in a woman who is abrupting, Abby is awake and talking through the section, commenting on her condition and the baby's. She has a very similar scene to Carol's birth where the baby is bad and then she bleeds. Her blood isn't clotting properly and she is in DIC, but still chatting away. With a regional anesthesia like a spinal, she would be at risk for a hemorrhage into her spinal cord and permanent paralysis which is why she should have had a general.

It looks like these spoilers are from the first two eppies, with 13.2 being called 'Graduation Day'. Maggie is at the baby's bedside in the NICU knitting, it is at least a week later, she knows everyone. The kiddo's pulse ox keeps alarming and the nurse keeps turning it off, thinking it's malfunctioning. Maggie is convinced something is wrong and personally calls the baby's doc. It looks like his tube became dislodged as he needs re-intubated. Not sure how that would happen, though.

Abby is still in the hospital a week after the birth and the baby is not doing well, either. The baby has been intubated and has needed dopamine since birth (in real life, this kid is seriously damaged if not going to die). The baby is still needing a lot of oxygen and they are unable to wean him at all from the vent. Like I said, very poor prognosis (major neurologic impairment and/or death) in real life with this scenario. However, my guess is that 'Graduation Day' indicates the kid gets better and 'graduates' off the vent. That's a common way to phrase it when a longterm NICU baby gets extubated.

The NICU attending is Dr. Raab who, of course, tells Maggie what a fabulous med student Abby was, just the best ever. For some reason, Abby, Luka and Maggie are all present during NICU rounds and both Abby and Maggie are somewhat disruptive questioning the resident and getting him flustered. And, in the midst of their child getting a cardiac echo to see if he has a heart defect, Abby takes a moment to holler at Luka first asking why he told Maggie to come. Then, when Luka logically explains that he didn't, he just told her what was happening, she asks why he did that. Because apparently the fact that she and her child were near death wasn't reason enough. No idea how this loving exchange ends.

It appears that Luka asked Abby to marry him and she turns him down, saying things are fine as they are. He then says he will settle for love. No more than that available.

Jerry gets shot in the heart and codes and needs shocked back to life. Neela is there for his surgery. He is fine in the end and his mom is eccentric and a little strange, as expected. She is upset he missed taking her to water aerobics.

Sam and Alex are still held hostage, in some sort of shack. Rafe is nowhere around, looks like Steve maybe shoots him. Not much available, she vows to Alex that she will protect him, no matter what.

At one point, when Luka and Abby are in the NICU with the baby, there is mention of a chaplain being there and making rounds. Perhaps Abby decides to give Luka a break and lets him baptize the sprout.

Dubenko operates on Jerry, along with Neela, in this episode.

Episode 13.2

Well sides are out for Graduation Day and Abby did indeed have a hysterectomy after the c-section. TPTB are going for maximum angst all the way around on this one.

In short, Abby is scared the baby is going to die, she tells Luka she wants them to live together and be a family but doesn't need a white dress and a ring to say I love you. Maggie is working her last nerve, Luka wants the chaplain to baptise Joe now. The line "the boy" was changed to "my boy" and they have a scene where Albright and Anspaugh are operating on the baby while Abby watches from the obs deck.

Looks like the head honchos at the hospital want someone's head to roll for the Clemente fiasco. They've chosen Kovac to be canned. Kerry is unhappy with this.

Morris asks Kerry for his job back, Gates is an intern and EMT, Neela gets drunk at Ike's. Sam shoots Steve apparently in self defense, Elliot brings Sam to the ER and she tells Kerry she needs a rape exam...it's angst for everyone

Episode 3 - Somebody to love

New recurring characters start making their appearances in this episode. Schiff, an offbeat surgical chief resident who works for Dubenko, will be in at least five episodes. Angela, an attractive and efficient African American who will be the director of Medical Staff Affairs and Acting Chief of Staff until a new permanent staff member is found. She is a potential love interest of Doctor Pratt. Angela will be in at least five episodes. There's another recurring guest star, and a Mary Sue at that. Her name is Hope Bobeck, and she's an ER intern who's "adorable, innocent, sincere, lovely" and very religious on top of all that. Most of the guys in the ER have crushes on her. [No age/look specified, but I bet she's a twentysomething blonde. ] Unspecified number of episodes.

In smaller roles, there's also a recurring male ER intern who's quirky looking (in an way they haven't yet decided) and a little off-kilter. There are also a couple of possible recurring surgical residents, both colorless and dull. There's the standard number of random crazies as patients, most with no more than a few lines.

Main plot: There's a dying African-American guy around 70 or so who is torn between being loyal to his long-term gay partner (John Mahoney) and the long-estranged family who didn't know until now about his sexual orientation.

John Mahoney's character's name is Bennett Cray, for anyone who's wondered

Episode 4 - Parenthood

New recurring character: Katey, a surgical colleague of Neela's whose distinguishing trait is the habit of making blunt, inappropriate sexual remarks.

It appears that Morris attends his biological son's soccer game, but has neglected to introduce himself to the parents. They're creeped out by this strange guy who seems to be overly invested in cheering for their son. They're particularly outraged when Morris pats the son's bottom.

Abby's Baby and Me instructor hates her. Abby hates her back. The other moms in the class hate Abby, too.

Other random plotlines -- a grandfather accidentally injures his grandson with a chainsaw, there's a gravely injured construction worker with a pregnant girlfriend, a dying elderly woman, etc.

Luka, Neela, Sam and Pratt care for an older man Clive King and his grandson, Thomas are injured in an accident involving a chain saw. Clive was working with the chain saw when the chain broke. Clive has minor injuries, but Thomas needs surgery. Clive was a single father to his sons and now wants to be a good grandfather, but his daughter-in-law Irene blames him for the accident, although his son Dennis is more forgiving. Luka is the attending on the boy’s case, and assures Clive that Thomas is a fighter, and will pull through. While they’re working on Thomas, Neela tells Luka she’s gotten a present for Abby and the baby. Luka teases (?) her, asking if he gets anything.

There is also an emergency involving a welding-tank explosion involving two men, one with a pregnant girlfriend. Luka is attending on many of the earlier cases, but later lets Pratt run the ER because things are quiet. Luka wants to leave early, to give Abby a hand with the baby. Pratt thinks the ER can run itself.

Alex is ditching school and going to the mall. Sam chats with Luka about what Alex is doing, and he realizes that’s what he has to look forward to.

Abby attends a “Mommy and Me” class, but the instructor and the other mommies are quick to look down on her. The mothers and their babies are dressed like Rodeo Drive twins, and Abby's baby isn’t! The don’t approve of Abby using a snuggler baby carrier (like Luka tried on in Split Decisions.) They tell her that the baby will get spinal and hip injuries. Abby fights back, saying she’s a doctor and knows what’s good for her baby, but they insist she should know better. She tells them all treating babies like designer accessories isn’t good for their babies, and she’ll be in the ER when their kids come in at fourteen pregnant or with an OD.

Later, Abby talks to a group of nannies (it's unclear whether she’s interviewing a potential nanny.) They seem to think Abby is one of them, and gossip about how terrible their bosses are, and what they do when they’re not around. One asks Abby if Luka is ugly, not realizing he’s her partner, but Abby assures them he’s a doctor and red-hot!

Things get tough for Pratt. His arguments with Gates continue, something to do with a diagnosis. Luka reminds him that if the residents are failing, it’s because he’s not doing a good enough job teaching.

Lucky Neela has a new medical student assigned to her, named Katey. Katey flirts with Pratt and Ray, makes crude sexual remarks and generally embarrasses Neela. Neela performs an emergency tracheotomy, after Pratt has made an error in diagnosis. Crenshaw (Rosenfeld has been renamed,) and he’s as obnoxious as ever, but Neela impresses him with the tracheotomy. Ray brings her some mail from the old apartment, including her first death benefit check from the Army. Ray also takes care of Katey when she gets some sort of minor burn.

Morris goes to a soccer match to see Max, on of his sperm-donor kids, play. Morris gets a little too familiar, and Max’s Mom accuses him of child molestation! When the police arrive at the ER, Max tells them Morris is his father. An older lady comes to the hospital looking for Morris. He’s kind to her, and she loves him.

Episode 5 - Ames V. Kovac

We see the first courtroom scene in Luka’s malpractice case. The hospital lawyers are making a strong case in his defense. But Ames’ lawyer has a few tricks of his own, and brings Ames’ small children into the courtroom as Luka’s lawyers are extolling his virtues. (The remarks the lawyer is making, appear to be some sort of summation.) Abby is back at work, and is trying to call Luka, but naturally, he’s got his cell phone turned off in court. At some point, Pratt asks if she knows how it’s going for Luka.

The bulk of this episode shows us various scenes in the trial where Ames’ attorneys try to prove that Luka was negligent in his care of Ames. It seems that, in 2004, Ames came to the ER with what later is diagnosed as pneumonia, forced by his boss who did not want a contagious employee. Ames resists because he is afraid his boss will give the job to someone else.

It takes a while for staff to see Ames; Chuny is unsuccessful in starting an IV for antibiotics and Luka starts a central line. Ames is in the ER for 3 days because there are no beds upstairs. He can’t sleep because of the noise, and must use a bedpan because nurses are too busy to help him. The ER is swamped the entire time, and the nurses had a higher than “standard” load, yet it seems Luka did not bring that fact to the attention of anyone.

On the third day, Ames has numbness in his arm but his symptoms go away. Because Luka did not, during the three days, listen for or appreciate Ames had a heart mummer, a clot formed and moved through the man’s congenital heart defect to his brain, causing a stroke.

Even worse, however, is that after the staff realized Ames had a stroke, Luka and the neurosurgeon strongly recommend TPA therapy. But Ames, thoroughly disgusted by his 3 day experience, refuses emphatically. The stroke is serious enough that he cannot recover fully. As a result, Ames can’t work, is on federal disability, lost his wife, sees his children only once a week, and lives a miserable life.

The defense attorney is quite effective, with film of Ames’ life before the stroke, with his wife and children, and today, alone, disabled. During closing arguments, she brings in Ames’ children for the effect on the jury.

The jury begins debating the outcome, some arguing about the ineffective care Ames received and condemning the entire health care system. Another argues that the judge wants them to decide based only on the evidence they saw. One accuses Luka of being part of the “system” and not caring, but driving his fancy car.

Luka is quite torn up about the entire event – before as he has a morning with Abby, and afterwards, walking the streets. In the morning, he is distracted and upset because the baby “burped” over his papers. Abby and he prepare to leave as the “super nanny” arrives. During the trial Luka loses his even temper under questioning. And near the end, he walks the streets quite upset with the proceeding. From other spoilers, we know that Abby is concerned, phoning Luka’s cell phone and leaving the message to call her.

Meanwhile, as the episode opens, Pratt is at a barber shop with some old-timers. He talks about how he has an apartment there, not up in the rich sections of the city. He notices that one of the regular customers has a tremor in his hand and asks if the man has seen a doctor. The answer is no because no one trusts the medical system. As he leaves, Pratt accidentally runs into Chaz, his half-brother. Chaz in entering college and they agree to see each other again. Pratt seems happy about that. Later, Chaz shows up to the ER asking to see Pratt.

It is Abby’s first day back at work, and although she offered to come to the court room with Luka (because she could see he was stressing about the trial), he says she should go to work, and Abby agrees. She meets Gates for the first time (who calls Luka the “big guy”) and is not impressed. Abby also meets Crenshaw and is equally unimpressed. She handles a number of patients, including…

Jenkins who has a splinted ankle and Abby shows him how to use crutches, but the crutches break and she falls down (but is alright). Jenkins in not impressed. Then, a man who who’s blood pressure was normal at triage but upon examination is high. And, Mariko who has Crones Disease and is now bleeding. Her specialist doc can’t scope her because of the bleeding and they prepare her for surgery. Mariko’s son is away at school but she won’t call him despite her serious condition. (Cut to Luka in court.) Later, Abby convinces Pratt to do a risky procedure to save Mariko’s life and it works. Meanwhile, Luka calls her while she was upstairs with a patient. Timmy calls Luka, “big daddy.”

Later, Abby takes a call from the nanny: baby Joe is upset and crying even though the nanny has done everything. Abby begins singing through the phone, joined by Sam and Pratt singing, “Should I Stay or Should I Go” by The Clash. At the words, “should I cool it or should I blow?” and the scene cuts to Luka on the stand during the trial, about to lose his cool.

13:06- Heart of the Matter

New recurring roles: Betina DeJesus, a radiologist who flirts with Pratt; and Dawn, a nurse from New Orleans who worked there during Hurricane Katrina (cue clumsy soapboxing by the writers...).

This week's depressing storylines: A husband/father dies in the ER after a car accident and his wife faints/"nearly dies" when she gets the news; a terminal cancer patient is involved in a motorcycle accident and his wife wants his diagnosis kept from him.

Offensive story of the week: a "sexually forward" fifteen year old constantly takes her clothes off, has an overinterest in sexual matters and has a propensity for sexually "inappropriate words and deeds". [The storyline attributes this behavior to Asperger's Syndrome, but it's really so the perv writer can get his jollies yet again. ]

Minor storyline: Morris has hired a makeup team for a segment he'll be on for the tv news.

The verdict is in, Luka is found not guilty by the jury, but he seems to found himself guilty by default. Kerry is supportive of him, sharing her own experiences with malpractice and encouraging him to not hide away as he was apparently doing at work. No indication as to Abby's response.

Ames turns up in the ER to see Luka after the verdict, no more info than that. Abby says she and Luka are supposed to see some film about the Dubrovnik mafia (sounds like she's probably mocking it) that night, but Luka tells her he needs to work late (maybe to talk to Ames?) and Haleh invites Abby to Ike's with a bunch of the other women including Neela who is apparently quite drunk, Sam, Dawn (new nurse from New Orleans), Kerry and others. They, of course, are discussing which of the ER staff they would sleep with, continuing TPTB's fascination with crudeness. Sam would do Pratt, the new nurse likes Pratt.

Morris is assigned to do a TV interview after no one else wants to do it and gets hair and makeup people, etc to come to the ER to glam him up, Kerry is not amused.

Josie is the Asperger's patient. She attends a special school and is brought to the ER with an ankle fracture incurred while playing basketball. She is quite verbal, not the typical Asperger's from what I know of it. She does spend a lot of time talking about bus routes, etc. in a sort of Asbergery way (sorry for the adjective). Gates is taking care of her, she mentions his pecs and says he shouldn't hide them under a white coat. She makes other inappropriate comments and, at one point, strips naked and, when he enters the cubicle, she shouts, "Happy Birthday!". When her parents come in, they confirm that she frequently gets naked in public and makes suggestive comments. Gates convinces them she is at risk and gets her started on Depo provera for birth control and teaches her how to use condoms. She initially hopes he is going to have sex with her, he clears that up right away.

A man is brought in after a motorcycle accident, CT indicates he has brain mets. His wife arrives and it seems he had surgery for pancreatic ca a couple years ago and now it has recurred and he doesn't have much time. She doesn't want to tell him because he was so depressed after his initial dx and he is now in such a good frame of mind. They are planning on going to Provence for the holidays and are very excited. Luka wants to tell him and get hospice involved, the wife says she will tell him herself, but doesn't. She convinces Luka that he needs to take this trip with her and that telling him is going to ruin what little time is left. Luka finally agrees and makes her promise that her husband will not drive ever again and that she will make sure to keep him safe. He apparently gives the guy meds for seizures and also maybe steroids for cerebral edema. The guy says his wife is in charge of all his meds and to just give her the info. Luka tells her Provence is beautiful (it sure is).

Neela loses a patient in the OR with Dubenko and Crenshaw is pissed at her because she went to the OR and he was left to do scut in the ER. He apparently reams her out, which probably is why she is drunk at Ike's.

When Neela tells the patient's wife that he has died, she faints in the surgery waiting room where Abby had brought her to wait. When Abby leaves the ER, she tells Frank to page her if her pediatrician calls, no idea what that is about. Since she goes out to Ike's with the girls and Luka is working late, it doesn't seem likely that the baby is sick.

Pratt flirts with the new radiologist and ends up taking her back to his place where they have dinner. Just as he is getting frisky, his brother Chaz shows up with all his stuff. It seems he is moving in with Pratt, who thought he wasn't going to turn up until the next day.

13.07 Jigsaw

Alex has been caught shoplifting; Abby and Luka are interviewing new nannies, including "trailer park woman" (hey -- someone Abby can identify with!), a "smoking hot" Brazilian woman, and a stout, dour Eastern European woman.

There's some soapboxing about people using the ER for primary care when an uninsured man needs a prescription for his son; and there are a pair of recurring roles for a young woman awaiting a liver transplant, and her mother.

The Brazilian (Flavia) nanny likes the cold – hence the reason she left Brazil. Luka asks her why she left her last job and she says she wanted “a change of scenery” – she was in New York. The East European (Vlada) is strong on discipline, especially for little boys. She thinks Americans don’t understand discipline and she reckons that Luka, as a European, does understand. Trailer park woman is in her 50s - sounds like her "money and her husband" have run out on her, so she thought she'd give nannying a try. She also get out a pack of cigarettes.

There is a character called "Manny" - and I really laughed because I know someone suggested Luka and Abby could be about to get a male nanny. Bit unfotunately, Manny isn't a nanny/manny - he is the store owner from who Alex stole the beer. He obviously knows Sam and Alex (I think he must have called Sam to the store) and says she's good for credit any time she wants it.

Ramon Batista wants a refill of his cholesterol medicine, and says the family medical center told him he needed certain tests. Weaver says he really has to go back there – he can’t use the ER as his primary medical provider. He tells her its difficult to get an appointment there and he doesn’t have much time because he works two jobs. Weaver says she’ll call them herself.

Later we see Hope tell Ramon that the center say they can’t fit him in for another month, but she surreptitiously gives him the pills he needs – enough for one month.

13.08 - Reason To Believe

A group of homeless kids bring in their friend who's suffering from rabies.

A woman brings in her husband, who's been injured in a barfight. They've lost their son and the father has gone into a "drunken tailspin". He talks about how his alcholism has hurt his wife. (Hmm...foreshadowing much?)

Pratt's volunteering at a free clinic. He also finds out that his brother is gay, and doesn't handle it particularly well.

The ER gets a new volunteer desk clerk. He has cerebral palsy.

Along with Andrew, the volunteer with mild cerebral palsy, there's a second volunteer, a friend of Frank's called Kripke. Kripke's even more of a bigot than Frank at his worst. However, Andrew seems to give as good as he gets.

In the middle of all this, Morris is sort of taking Andrew under his wing - ie boasting about his great medical successes... Including how he "saved Jerry the desk clerk's life".

I think we may also be seeing Kerry's new love interest in this episode. It seems Kerry is working with a TV company who are producing stories on healthcare; the director is called Courtney. They've done some filming at a school, though Kerry is a bit miffed as she thought she'd being doing important stuff, but so far they've only covered Botox and insanitary manicures. Back at the ER, Courtney witnesses Kerry in action... she asks how she can possibly wind down after working in such a hectic place. Kerry says with a glass of wine and hot bath... they exchange a look, and leave the ER together.

13.09 - Scoop and Run

SuperAbby episode. She's working on a helicopter medivac. There's a huge bus accident, lots of serious injuries, etc. Of course the team doubts her at first, and of course she "wins their respect" eventually.

This is the Thanksgiving episode, by the way. The staff have a Thanksgiving dinner in the lounge, including Joe.

Miscellaneous thread: Alex makes friends with a girl who's unhappy with her foster family.

13.10 - Tell Me No Secrets

There's a new nurse on the floor named Ben and Sam's showing him around. All the bratty male doctors start taking bets on how soon he'll quit because he can't handle it, until a very large, very gross drunk starts menacing Hope, then he tackles the guy, wrestles him back to bed and shows of just how macho and tough he really is.

And guess what kiddies? Manhandle-me Ben asks Sam out for dinner afterwards to celebrate his first day, she asks if it's a date and he says call it a date if it means you'll say yes. I think Sam's about to meet her next someone, don't you?

Meanwhile, Ray is dating his med student Katie and trying to keep it secret. Oh Ray.

he's [Ray] about as subtle as a certain short actor dating another girl named Katie and though he denies it over and over, even the patients have figured it out and Pratt is warning him by the end of the day that they have to stop it.

There's a terribly sad case of a 13 year old girl found in front of her school in the morning, unconscious and with heavy bleeding from down there. Abby has to do a rape exam while the mother helps keep her calm. So, so sad. The police think the stepfather who was the last one to see her when he dropped her off may have done it. In the end, Neela and Haleh are the ones who figure out her story doesn't match the facts and that she had a part in hurting herself. So awful, but yay for Haleh, right darlings?

That horrid drunk starts spitting at everyone. Sam calls for a mask but Ben says he'll just bite through it keep spitting nasty germs at everyone. He finds a c-collar that he puts on the spitter backwards and makes him look like Hannibal Lecter. So Morris asks the drunk if he's like some fava beans and chianti and while Pratt and Ray whine about being shown up by a "murse", Morris says Ben is so macho then pretends he didn't say it. Morris has a little mancrush I think, darlings.

Luka is not having any luck with the Ames situation. First he tries to talk to the police about it but they don't believe anything bad is happening, then he barges into Ames workplace to confront him and ends up looking like a crazy stalker himself. Poor Luka.

Gates is pouring on the romantic charm with our Neela, he tells her she makes him want more than just trying to live someone else s life. I dont think Meg is going to be happy when she finds this out, do you?

That little girl who hurt herself so it would look like she was raped? Her mom is the new boss at County.

Ames is working as a telemarketer for an aluminum siding company.

Neela is not buying whatever Gates is selling this episode and keeps sidestepping and moving every time he tries to lean in close to look at an xray with her. Good girl Neela, Dont let him fool you with that fake charm.

[re the girl who hurt herself] - Yes, this is Angelas daughter and we meet her husband too when he comes in to be with them and the police question him.

Thats most of the good stuff, darlings. Pratt has a super-annoying patient who got food poisoning from chicken chow mein takeout and now she thinks she has avian flu. Ray accuses Sam of telling people about him and Katie but she swears she didnt. Maybe if you werent acting all flirty in front of patients it might help Ray.

Seems Luka hasnt told Abby anything about his worry that Ames is stalking them. As they walk into work Luka is in a hurry to get inside, agitated that Abby wants to stop at the roach coach. She asks why he's been acting wierd and mentions that he ran into the street with no shoes and no coat earlier that morning. He brushes it off and says that he was parked on the street and thought he was going to get a ticket. (Me thinks thats not true. . .) Later Abby walks up to Luka and officer Hollis right as they are finishing their conversation about Ames, just missing what they were talking about.

Looks like Edie, from episode 8, is Abbys fathers. He comes in and asks specifically for her. She remembers him from when they met at Ikes. When shes done treating him the notes say that the camera focuses on him as he watches Abby walk away.

Also, Abby treats a 20 something girl that swallowed her boyfriends cell phone. She tells Abby that her boyfriend is sketchy and she knows that girls are always calling him. She asks her if her "old man" is like that too and Abby says no, hers is "cool".

Angela's daughter's name is Danielle. (She's being played by Paige Hurd.) Apparently Danielle is hurting herself as some sort of reaction to witnessing Angela get raped when she was younger.

Megs daughter Sarah calls Neela a wh0re!
It's not nice between Kerry and Luka.He says his hands are tied and he's not happy. She challanges him, is he doing the right thing or the easy thing?

Haleh sees their exchange. Later Kerry tell Haleh that was the first time she heard about that, Luka just told her. Haleh can't believe it. Kerry tells her to let it go.

Morris tells Sam that Alex stole his credit card and has been having stuff sent to Sam's house. Sam doesn't believe it. Morris not happy.

Luka fires Kerry because he has to make cuts, it's all about the money. Abby knew Luka had to cut someone, but Luka never told her it was going to be Kerry. She says he needs to fight for her. Luka says he did, but he has to make some though decisions, it's his job. Abby asks why he didn't tell her, Luka says it's not her concern. Luka asks what that means, Abby replies that Kerry's one of the best doctors on the floor. Luka says she's also one of the most expensives, too.

Later Haleh and Sam talk about Kerry, Haleh confirms it's about the money, and adds that Kerry knows the place better than anyone.

When Kerry leaves, Abby gives Luka a look.on..

13.12 - City Of Mercy

Christmas episode.

A car accident victim is reunited with his estranged children; a homeless woman is dumped at County but Sam gets her home to her elderly parents.

They're doing a "ripped from the headlines" story (an upbeat one for a change, unless they change the ending) where two couples swap kidneys.

A fourteen year old homeless girl who "used her sexuality" to protect her friends is in labor.

There's also a drunk Santa, and a Christmas Eve bible study class.
Lots of tension between Ray and Gates. Gates is apparently late and Ray has to pick up a patient just as he's going off shift. He's not happy and tells Gates so. He also thinks Gates is not doing a good job, but Gates tells Ray he doesn't need to be micromanaged. The patient concerned was hurt when his windshield was speared by an icicle.

Luka asks Abby if she's still mad at him...

Did someone call it about the kids who thought Neela was an angel? Well done! Teller comes in to tell Neela that Ellie is sick.

One of Morris's kids turns up - his "dad" won't let them celebrate Christmas so he wants to be with Morris, his "real" dad.

I hope tptb fix this: they've got Luka referring to "Jasna" as his wife instead of Danjiela.

He tells Abby that after "Jasna and the kids" died he needed to make a change and came to the US. His brother said he was a coward, running away. He says it's only recently that he's realised that he wasn't running from anything but to something. Then he says that he was running to her (Abby), and he'll never let anything take that away. She touches his face tenderly, he kisses her hand. Then she tells him he looks hot in antlers (how very Abby!).

Icicle guy Rufus is taken up to the OR. He makes Neela promise to send something to his estranged kids for Xmas if he doesn't make it. He gives her $40 for this. She tells him he'll be ok.

Rufus survives surgery, but it was touch & go, so Neela calls his kids, and they and their mom are there when he wakes up.

Dubenko is in a spiffy suit, ready to go off to celebrate Christmas with his sister. He gives Neela a bundle wrapped in surgical towel. He says he doesn't usually give presents. The gift is a pair of loops, the magnifying eyewear that surgeons use. Apparently they were the first pair, which he bought when he was a med student. Neela realises how thoughtful a gift it actually is.

"City of Mercy" refers to Mercy hospital, which has apparently "dumped" a destitute patient on the street. Sam and Ben deal with the patient (Leonore Simpkins) and contact Mercy about it.

Sam calls a Mercy administrator to come over to County - and tells her that Mercy must take the patient to her home town of Gary, almost two hours' away (Leonore wants a nice, slow drive). Otherwise, Sam says, she'll rat on Mercy's policy of not treating poor and destitute patients to the authorities.

Luka and abby make up. very sweet scene.
he tells her that his brother thought he was a coward for moving away, thougth he was running away from something. luka says he wasnt running away from anything, he was running to to something- Abby.
Scene notes say he is very moved, she touches his face, he kisses her hand.

Morris goes to bible study with Hope.

Abby and Luka fight about Luka going to Ames' work and threatening to kill him! Luka says the cops wouldnt do anything, so he did.

13.13 A House Divided

Gates and Ray are arguing, at one point over whether a surgical consult is needed for a patient (ETA - Ray thinks no but Gates calls anyway and Neela agrees with Gates). Ray is arguing with patient relatives, particularly one kid's stepfather who berates his stepson even though he helped the son.

There's some friction between Abby and Luka about something, but I don't know what. She's trying to do an intubation and is struggling but doesn't want him to help, he isn't being entirely friendly either. At one point Timmy says that a patient Abby was asking about called + this is a 'sore point'.

Ooh! Ben kissed Sam. But Sam says she has a rule about workplace romance now.

Sarah still doesn't like Neela, but Gates says that she will be fine once she realises Neela doesn't threaten Gates + Sarah's relationship.

Pratt's in trouble... someone came in with medication from the clinic he helps with, and Abby thought they'd got the medication from someone unlicensed and called the cops... Pratt's arrested for violation of the Controlled Substances Act and has to be handcuffed. ETA - Luka asks Abby why she didn't run calling the cops by him - ah, see, there are consequences to this workplace bickering, kids.

Sam says she thinks Ben’s great, but tells him she’s had some bad experiences regarding workplace romance.

Dennis and Clarke are two stepbrothers who have had a snowmobile accident. Clarke’s father is very angry with Dennis, whom he says deliberately wanted to hurt Clarke. But Clarke was actually the one driving – though Dennis didn’t tell his stepdad this. Ray wonders why.

Ray and Gates are arguing about the treatment of Dennis, and Neela gets involved coming down on Gates’ side that the patient needs to be admitted for observation.

Timmy is in this episode.

Abby called the medical board about the drugs situation - so Pratt really is in huge trouble.

Ray has a go at dad telling him that Dennis probably saved Clarke's life by carrying him a mile to the road. He also tells him he needs to stop treating Dennis like crap. Luka overhears as he passes by, and tells Ray to back off.

He asks Ray what’s up, why is he fighting with Gates, with the parents of patients. Ray explains about the kids and the dad.

[My remarks, not a spoiler – it’s so ironic because regular attending Luka would have done EXACTLY the same thing (heck, he’d have punched dad by now!), but he tells Ray to focus just on the medicine.]

The cops interview Pratt. He says he has a medical license and he can write prescriptions – cop replies that diverting controlled substances to the church is a felony. Angela tries to intervene, saying she wants a lawyer present, but cop tells her this has nothing to do with the hospital.

Cop pushes Pratt up against the wall. Next he’s being frogmarched out of the hospital in handcuffs for being aggressive.

13.14 - Murmurs of the Heart

Ames breaks into Luka's apartment. Abby's there. She knows they're in trouble. She wants to give Luka a signal of what's happening before he gets home. Luka arrives. Ames takes Luka. Abby calls Franks. She wants him to call up to records, get Ames' files. Frank says he doesn't know if he'll be able to do that, it's late. Abby screams at him to just do it. She's pleading, Ames got Luka.

Look, it's Gracie. Think about her as someone related to Sam. As in family.

Meg takes too much medicine for her heart. Neela follows the rig to the hospital, she's driving and Sarah's next to her in the passenger seat.

Ames makes Luka drive to his old neighborhood, the lovely place he lived before the stroke. The police finds the car. Just the car. No handsome Warrick, but the CSIs are at Luka's place talking to Abby. She tells them to look through Ames's files, it may help. They don't listen to her, how dare them! When the car is found, Abby wants to go with them. But the cop in charge wants to pick up Ames' ex-wife first. He tells Abby to stay there and wait.

Pratt's out of jail. Pastor Watkins paid his bail. Pratt's not happy.

Ames breaks into Luka's apartment and Abby tells him it doesn't matter how he got in there. She tells him if he leaves nothing will happen, no trouble. Ames tells Abby she doesn't know what trouble is and tells her to call Luka.
She tries to be reasonable, says there are better ways to deal with whatever Ames' feeling. But Ames doesn't want to hear any of it and yells at Abby to call Luka. After Ames yells at Abby, 'her eyes brim with tears'. When Ames breaks in the baby's sleeping. Cute Joe wakes up and cries when Ames yells at Abby. But Ames doesn't do anything to him, he wants Luka and only Luka.

Luka's trying to get Pratt out of jail when Ames makes Abby call him. Pratt has already been processed and Luka tells the cop that Pratt hasn't broken the law, there's no need for all that. The cop doesn't care and tells Luka he'll be able to post bail for Pratt in a few hours. Luka argues that it's not a criminal matter, just a misunderstanding. The cop channells his pals at Law & Order and says that he never heard that one. Luka wants to know what is Pratt's bail, but it's up to the judge. Luka can't stay and asks the cop if he can leave a credit card number. Silly boy! The cop channells his pals at NYPD and says that they offer free miles with every bail.

Pastor Watkins arrives and introduces himself to Luka. He says he was trying to contact Pratt at County and people told him what happened. Luka tells Pastor Watkins he doesn't know what's going on at his church, but he knows Pratt wasn't alone in this mess.Pastor Watkins says Pratt wasn't alone. Luka then asks why Pratt's the one in handcuffs.

Gracie's Sam's grandmother. She's one of a kind. Gracie invited Ben to dinner.
She's cooking. Gracie tells Ben and Owens about her childhood. Owens the old man who lives upstairs from Sam. When she was a kid, a goat ate her pigtails at a petting zoo. Ben tells Sam he likes what she's done to her place.

There's a fire in Sam's apartment and it spreads fast. Owens is sleeping, he's also old and wears a cane. He's in a bad shape. Ben takes Gracie out of the building. Sam and Alex aren't nowhere around. Ben wants to go back to look for them, but the firefighters don't let him get inside. Sam's inside the building with Alex. She uses a chair to break Owens's window and get the firefighters' attention. A fire ladder is used to rescue Sam, Alex and Owens. Owens has multiple burns. Sam and Alex are ok. Morris and Ray treats Owens. But it's Sam who saves the day telling them something they didn't know about the proper way to treat Owens. Sam tells Owens the fire started with a candle in her apartment. Sam tells Morris that Alex said he knocked over a candle. Sam's not sure that's what really happened.

13.15 - Dying is Easy

A 30ish comic with end-stage leukemia is too ill for his last gig, so he does it for the ER staff. ("Dying is easy. Comedy is hard.") They're looking for a star name for this one.

A panel is investigating Pratt.

An unattractive woman has deceived a date about her looks through email, and she gets injured while chasing him down after he rejects her.

Random: drug addict; weird cat lover; mother who refuses to cut her son's hair. Pratt, Hope and Gates are working on a junkie when Morris gets the news that Pratt's medicial license was suspended. Pratt needs to deffend his actions and convince the board. Mitchell, Baxter and Higgins are the doctors.
They listen to Pratt. Pratt's confident. He tells them he was trying to help people. He couldn't send them to County because County is all about critical patients nowdays. Pratt explains that some of the clinic patients didn't meet the criteria for poor people. Pratt says he had a record system, he didn't charge, he was just trying to help people. The three doctors are not happy with his explanations. Mitchell tells Pratt he's a volunteer at a free clinic, too.
But they keep accurate records, are careful with medication and they're there for their patients. The board thinks Pratt has violated the Medical Practice Act. They believe there are enough justification to suspend his license. The doctors also believe that Pratt was really trying to help the community. They decideto put him in probation for a year. Pratt's practice will be monitored. He will need to perform 100 hours of community service. They suggest Pratt could find a way to help legalize a certain church-based clinic.

Abby and Ray treat Jessie, a six years old boy. Jessie has lice. The mother wants Ray to cut his hair. Ray's desperate, he doesn't want to be alone with lice boy!

Sam calls Abby because Simon's throwing up. Simon's the stand up comic.

Morris and Luka treat Oliver. Oliver burned his hand trying to cremate his cat in the stove. Poor Luka, he tries to get an oxygen tank falling off Oliver's gurney with his splinted hand and it hurts. Morris helps him. Luka compliments Morris when he explains all about a difficult diagnosis he made.

Neela works with Dubenko and Creenshaw in double kidney transplant. She's thrilled about it and tells Ray. Neela says to Ray it's so amazing to see these people who were waiting for the kidneys and now they are eating Jello with their donors. She tells him all about the four ORs, four patients, four kidneys and how they all worked well. Neela confess to Ray that this is why she became a surgeon. Ray's all smiles because watching Neela makes his day.

Poor Simon. He performs his act for Abby, Morris and others. But he's dying.
He decided for stand up comedy two years ago, when his boss fired him and his father passed away.

Ray thinks about Neela when he gets home. He has a picture of the two of them at a party.

Gates doesn't finish his shift because Sarah's having trouble at school.

Neela's conflicted. Neela tells Malinda she doesn't have a boyfriend.

Malinda's an overweight woman who emailed a guy for weeks until they met. Their date was a a disaster. He made her pay the bill. Malinda ran after her e-date and fell into a hydrant. Turns out that Malinda told her e-date she looked like Cindy Crawford. He told her he looked like Matt Damon. Malinda tells Neela that a girl pretty like Neela doesn't need the web.

More spoilers for Episode 13.15 - Dying is Easy: Morris is given a paper from upstairs and goes to Pratt, who is working with Hope and Gates on a young girl high on some drug, and tells Pratt that the Medical Board suspended Pratt's license so he can't work at County anymore. Pastor Watkins surprises Pratt and the board by showing up with the congregation to speak on Pratt's behalf. Hope also comes to support Pratt. Pratt and the group are dismayed then relieved when the board comes back with their decision. Ray and Neela spend time together getting coffee, talking about work -(this is where something is supposed to happen between them).
Sam is reluctant to get involved with Ben, from the previous episode. Patients include a little boy with possible head lice, a stand up comedian diagnosed with leukemia, a man who suffered severe burns while trying to cremate his cat on the stove, a young woman high on drugs and an overweight woman in her 30s who met a man online and later in real life then tripped on a fire hydrant while running after him when he stuck her with the bill.

Episode 13.16 - Crisis of Conscience
Sam is overworked because some nurses are sick, others on vacation, etc. Gates and Kovac treat Anna Sykes who is vomiting and has an altered mental status. A woman is brought in by her sons and dies of kidney failure.Sam is pissed when a cop drops Alex at the ER after he stole quarters from a laundromat. Neela is banished from the ER for a day. Pratt and Jane take care of a man with knife wounds to his chest. Abby and Ray help a cheerleader who got hurt while practicing a formation, the squad is being pushed too hard by their coach.. Crenshaw also appears. A patient recovering from seizures predicts the future, include those of various ER workers.
Abby treats a couple that got married in a wican wedding. Their hands were binded together and as a result of that they have lost some function in their hands, thumbs etc. Abby calls Luka in to check out the odd situation. The couple tells them that they are not recognized by the state because their marriage in only going to last for one year and then they will evaluate whether they want to still be together after that time period is over. Abby asks if that just means that they will not try their hardest to make it work for the long haul because they know there is an easy way out at some point. They think thats bogus. Luka butts in and says that they are getting married, so they are thinking about that stuff. Abby gives him a look and then he apologizes that it just slipped out.
Luka, Sam and Gates are treating a woman who seems to be in liver failure -initially she was severely dehydrated but conscious. Now she's in a pretty bad way - Sam's doing CPR. They're about to have one last go with the defib, as her sons are watching, but she then has a pulse. However, she's been down for so long she probably has severe brain damage. One of her sons still seems very bitter. Later on Gates sees the brothers arguing. He says they should be spending this time with their mom instead. Apparently she had a gambling problem, hence the son's bitterness, and the brothers will lose their home because of the debt. Later the mother deteriorates again, Luka and Sam try to save her but have to stop. It turns out the mother committed suicide, one of the boys tells Gates.

Pratt and Jane treat a stabbing victim called Scorpion. Neela and Crenshaw come down for a consult, though Neela says she's been banned from the ER all day by Crenshaw. Apparently these stab wounds are self-inflicted - the guy wants to get rid of the 'devil's etchings'.

Remember Neela's transplant stuff? A guy Manish (not sure if we've seen him before - think he might have been in CoM) is donating a kidney to a girl called Emily, but it seems she might have paid him for it.

A police officer turns up at the ER with Alex. He didn`t take Alex to the station because he said his mom worked in the ER. The officer is grateful for all the work the staff do. Sam is understandably not happy and says she will call Alex every half hour to make sure he is at home. He seems to have tried to steal quarters from a laundromat. Later on Sam's trying to get through to Alex and make him see the path he's set himself on. During the episode Sam treats a boy called James who is 8. He has broken his school science project as well as his tibia + fibula (he names the bones). He reminds her of Alex when he was younger and happier.

Abby's treating Fred and Brenda, whose hands have gone a bit numb having been bound together in a handfasting ceremony (anybody watch Charmed?) - a Wiccan wedding. She calls Luka over to see them. Abby asks if such a thing is even recognised by the state, which it isn't. Apparently though, the couple don't believe in the whole together-until-death part, though Abby questions whether that will mean they won't try as hard to make it work. Fred thinks that kind of stuff (ie Judaeo-Christian weddings is rubbish). Abby disagrees. So does Luka. When the other couple are puzzled by this, Luka explains that they're getting married (and apologises to Abby for letting that 'slip out').

She also treats a guy with temporal lobe epilepsy called Tommy, who tells her she will struggle to balance her work and home life. She is unimpressed by this, unsurprisingly.

Ray and Abby are in the ambulance bay early on. Ray asks if things are back to usual with her and Luka - she says things are good (if perhaps not quite normal). She then asks about Katey - he says things are great but Abby can tell he's not quite sure about that. Then a bus full of cheerleaders pulls up. One of them, Tasha, is in pain - the others try to get her to walk but Abby intervenes and calls for a gurney. Apparently she fell from the top of a 'layer cake' (I have no idea what that is - perhaps a pyramid). Ray is the cheerleaders' 'type'. Tasha's going to need surgery, though some of the girls seem more concerned about a competition they have next week. Ray reminds them where their priorities should be. Crenshaw comes down with Neela (who has to write everything down for him, Abby wonders how she can stand this), he says it might be a ruptured spleen. On the way to surgery, Tasha confesses that she might not have fallen in a formation, but that the other girls were responsible for her injuries.

Nothing more to add except that Gates might be afraid of folk singers. (Neela doesn't like clowns, Abby doesn't like cheerleaders). Also, at one point Gates tries to talk to Neela, but she's busy.

Episode 13.17 - From Here To Paternity
Sam is not in a good mood because of Alex. She is thinking of sending him away at a school for at-risk teens. Kovac, Morris, and Sam treat Mario Reed, a 42-year-old who has been shot in the chest, along with Donnie, another injured man. Ray treats a man with a broken nose. Morris and Hope make a bet. Gates meet with 60-year-old Mike Gates at McGinty's. The ER staff treats a family who crashed in the blizzard and were trapped in their car for 2 days. Abby, Neela, Dubenko, Pratt, Gates, and Frank, also appear.

Mae Lee's Dubenko's new pupil. Neela's jealous of her. Crenshaw tells Neela it's the surgical cycle of life. First it was Albright, then him, then Neela, and now it's Mae Lee.Crenshaw explains that's how Duebnko works, but Neela shouldn't be worried, because soon Dubenko'll get tired of Mae Lee, too, just like he got tired of all of them.

Episode 13.18 - Photographs and Memories

A man has crashed his truck and hurt himself, his wife and another family and now he feels so very bad about it and Sam feels bad for him.
Poor Sam, she also feels bad about sending Alex away to a boarding school for troubled teenagers, now that he won't answer her e.mails or call her.

Abby just feels bad that Morris ordered her out of a trauma because there were too many doctors there and not enough looking after the other patients in the ER. Abby suggests to Luka that they get married in Croatia.

Neela and Ray are a little awkward when they both show up in the break room to get coffee. Especially when he says "Honey?". Good thing she had the bear jar of honey he wanted for his tea in her hand at the time and didn't misunderstand at all what he was saying.

Dubenko's new prize student freezes up in a trauma while he's trying to talk her through a procedure. Neela sees the whole thing from the next room. Unfortunately so does the patient's husband who's the truck driver who jack-knifed and they have to watch her die. The trucker crashed because he couldn't read the sign for his exit. Because he can't read. At all. His wife always rode with him and read all the maps and told him when to make his turns, but she was tired and fell asleep and he didn't wake her up and made a wrong turn.
