For film personalities, Cannes provides a great opportunity for networking. Aishwarya has been a regular visitor at Cannes since 2002 when the big budget bollywood film Devdas was screened at the festival. In 2003 Aishwarya was at the Cannes as a member of the jury. This year she is there to promote Provoked which was screened on Thursday and Friday, with another screening scheduled for Monday.
Directed by Jag Mundhra, Provoked is the true story of a 23 year old Punjabi woman named Kiranjit Ahluwalia, who having lost both her parents by the age of 16, was persuaded by her brothers to give up her law studies and marry London based Deepak Ahluwalia.
Within 2 days of her wedding Deepak began to batter, rape and sexually abuse Kiranjit. She was kicked, punched and slapped; beaten with belts, shoes and pieces of furniture, threatened with knives, hot irons and nearly strangled. The violence and abuse continued for 10 years during which the couple had two boys, who too were subject to violence.
Kiranjit sought help from her family and her doctor but to no avail. She even tried to end her life. Finally, in desperation she set fire to Deepak's bedclothes while he slept.
Kiranjit was initially found guilty of murder and put into prison. In a later appeal she was held guilty only of manslaughter due to diminished responsibility and released from prison.
