Award-winning comedy actress Catherine Tate and Sarah Parish star alongside David Tennant in a special Christmas edition of the time-travelling adventure.

Bride-to-be Donna mysteriously vanishes as she prepares to marry her boyfriend Lance in a glittering ceremony on Christmas Eve. She suddenly appears, to her complete astonishment, in the Tardis with the Doctor.

As the Tardis races to get to the church on time, the Doctor and Donna are closely watched by the sinister figure of The Empress of Racnoss from her throne in her spaceship. It soon becomes clear that Donna is the key to an ancient alien plan to destroy the Earth.

David Tennant plays the Doctor, Catherine Tate plays Donna and Sarah Parish plays The Empress of Racnoss.

Spider woman Sarah Parish- Runaway Bride baddie

Monster maker Neill Gorton has revealed the pain behind his most challenging creation yet - the Racnoss Empress from The Runaway Bride, played by Sarah Parish.

"We've fitted all manner of prosthetics to hoardes of tough stuntmen over the years," said Neill, "but Sarah is, without doubt, the hardiest person we've ever had the pleasure to work with!"

Parish had to endure punishing 14-hour days to become the sinister half-spider, half-human Empress of the Racnoss. This included a full two hours in the prosthetics department each morning of the three-day shoot, where she was fitted with a prosthetic head, contact lenses and dentures.

Wearing a body suit, she then took her place within the complex set, having to contort her body into a kneeling position and arch her back for the entire 11 hours of shooting, before spending a further hour at the end of the day having everything removed.

TV Coverage of the Runaway Bride

This evening's Wales Today (BBC Wales) had a brief article on The Runaway Bride, reporting that the Doctor "gets thrown back into a bizarre set of circumstances ... it's so strange, even the cast weren't sure how the final cut would look".

David Tennant commented: "It's one of those shows where so much happens in post-production. All sorts of things happen to the TARDIS that have never happened before. The three of us [Tennant, Sarah Parish and Catherine Tate] did a scene together when we were in a completely different room on a completely different day."

Sarah Parish added: To see the final [result] it's unbelievable - it's so exciting!"

Meanwhile, Catherine Tate appeared on the New Paul O'Grady Show on Channel 4, and inevitably the first topic of discussion was the forthcoming episode. Tate reported that she really enjoyed her time making the show, and suggested she really would have wanted to have become a proper companion rather than just the one-off appearance she had for the special. She also mentioned she'd attended the screening that had taken place today (which is presumably where the Wales Today item originated).

O'Grady also commented that he wants a small part in the series!

I can't wait for the Christmas episode now! It should be great! It said in the paper that Catherine Tate turned down the role of becoming the Doctor's new assistant after filming the Christmas episode. Apparently towards the end, the Doctor and Catherine Tate's character spark up a good friendship. David Tennant admitted he was dissapointed that Catherine Tate turned down the role.

I don't think that is entirely true, Catherine Tate was on Paul O Grady the otehr day, and he asked her about becoming the Doctor's New Assistant and she said no, she was just in it for the episode, but she was speaking very highly of it, and saying how its an amazing opputunity to be the doctors assistant so i don't think if she got offered it she would of turned it down :searchme:

Yeah, i read that on Outpost Gallifrey. The Sun said that she was really disappointed to have not been asked to be the permanent companion, but i dunno... i think that they're just taking a sarcastic comment to the extreme, if that makes sense. They were making out that she felt like she had "failed" as she hadn't been asked to stay... I just find that a bit unbeleiveable

I enjoyed the episode, but have to say - Catherine Tate did my head in!!! I'm sorry, but if she had shouted one more time, I would have felt compelled to climb in my tv and knock her block off !!! :rotfl:

Good apart from that though. Good to see mention of Rose too, and to see that the Dr did miss her.

I had a feeling that Lance would be involved somewhere though - no one would have been that stupid at first glance of seeing an arachnid that size, to go up behind it with a pick axe would they!?
